Ramsbottom 1979-81 Rammy Castle As a teenager in Ramsbottom I had 3 places I could go on an evening #1 Youth Club #2 U18's disco at the Civic Hall on a Thursday night #3 Rammy Castle.. The Castle had wooden benches, graffiti covered walls, stank of p+×s, beer and vomit yet we would all congregate in there, rotate round so everyone got chance to get out of the rain. The boys were mainly punks with green Mohicans or bleached white hair, leather jackets, safety-pins, DocMartens and cans of Carlsberg Special Brew. The girl's uniform was a duffle coat, skinny jeans & converse/kickers and cider. We just sat about, sullen miserable teenagers in a damp grey working-class town.🤣🤣🤣 One Friday night one of the lads, drunk, put his fist through the Royal Oak Pub window. Seconds later (Rammy is only small🤣🤣🤣) the police turned up in their black Mariah and tried to cart us all off. Just at that moment my mum appeared from doing overtime at work across the road😆😆 grabbed the hood of my duffle coat and marched me & my pal home🤣🤣🤣 The shame of it!! The record I chose most on the jukebox at the Youth Club was Sheena Is A Punk Rocker by The Ramones. The Undertones, a Northern Irish punk rock band, released their debut song "Teenage Kicks". J.J. O'Neill, the band's rhythm guitarist and lead songwriter, wrote the song in the summer of 1977. It was recorded on 15 June 1978 and first released that September on small Belfast record label Good Vibrations, before the band signed to Sire Records on 2 October. Sire Records acquired the copyrights to the Teenage Kicks EP and re-released the song as a vinyl single on their own label on October 14, reaching number 31 on the UK Singles Chart two weeks later. The song has also been ranked as the second best indie song of all time in a 2016 poll conducted by an alternative music radio station (after "Freak Scene" by Dinosaur Jr.). The band's debut album The Undertones, released in May 1979, did not feature the single. However, the October 1979 re-release included both "Teenage Kicks" and their second single, "Get Over You". InfluentialFrom 1978 till his death in 2004, BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel declared "Teenage Kicks" his all-time favorite song. On September 25, he sang the song twice for the first time on his show.Peel also expressly requested that bits of the song's lyrics be placed on his gravestone. In 2008, the song was the theme song for the ITV comedy of the same name. The song "Teenage Kicks" was significantly included in Season 3, Episode 5 of the television series "Derry Girls" ("The Reunion"), which aired in 2022. I celebrated my Irish heritage today by listening to The Big Bad Bollocks and The Undertones while making breakfast, eating a pile of potatoes for dinner, drinking a bunch of Guinness, and watching the first Leprechaun movie. All in all, some nice parts of a pretty good lazy day. I’m not sure why “official” is included on this button, this was made by American novelty company Russ Berrie and is probably not a souvenir from Blarney Castle, home of the famed stone. I read about an urban myth that locals piss on the stone at night so visitors are kissing their urine. Everyone hates a tourist.
