Posture matters ... for SO MANY REASONS! We already know that our posture has a significant part in back and neck pain, that's obvious. What many of you may not realize is that posture has a significant part in many other things ... including breathing and swallowing (two things that tend to be very important!) This study found that those who had basically more of a "hunched" posture, had issues with their ability to swallow effectively AND their ability to breathe properly. We have had great success in helping patients who are more "hunched" with their posture, when those patients have done their work at home. It IS a tough change to make, it involves getting your spine moving, strengthening some muscles while stretching others, changing your ergonomics and the posture you assume while you are looking at your phone or working on your computer ... it takes a commitment, but it IS possible. Have you noticed that you look down at your phone a lot? Keeping your head flexed forward is not a natural position for your neck. Your head weighs approximately 10 lbs, which is supported by the muscles in the front and back of your neck. When your head is flexed forward, more strain is put on the muscles in the back pf your neck and the muscles in the front of your neck are no longer helping to support your head. The longer and farther your keep your head flexed forward, the more force is applied to your neck. Over time, the weight of your head causes your shoulders to move forward, and you end up having an increased curve in the upper part of your back called a hyperkyphosis. Have you ever heard of a little thing called "tech neck?" Well, even if you may not have heard of it, in an increasingly technological world, there's a very real chance you may have experienced it! Let's learn a little bit about what prolonged use of technology with poor posture can affect. The tendons and ligaments in our necks are designed to comfortably support approximately ten to twelve pounds, which is the weight of the average human cranium and all of the organs contained therein. This is all fine and dandy when we are in a neutral position, looking forward without applying any angle to our gaze. However, when we bend our neck down to gaze upon our phones or laptops, the weight we are actually supporting astronomically increases! When our necks are at a range from 45 to 60 degrees, the actual weight our necks are supporting with the added force of gravity acting on a wider surface area of our body jumps up to 50-60 pounds, roughly 5 times the preferred limit of 10-12 pounds! This will present with pain, tightness, and lack of mobility throughout your cervical spine, neck muscles, shoulders, and scapula. You may also get a headache and notice that when you try to point your head in the same direction that caused the stress injury, you experience sharp pains, greatly reducing range of motion. We have all been informed that smartphone and tablet devices have been the cause of “Text Neck Syndrome”. - “Text Neck Syndrome” is a term used to describe a repetitive stress injury to the neck caused by having your head in a forward position for an extended period of time. - Studies have been used to compare an upright sitting group vs. a forward head posture sitting group. The upright sitting group has been shown to have more persistent neck pain compared to the forward head posture group.
