The second film in The Hobbit trilogy, this felt more like a xeroxed copy of the first film without any of that fun stuff at the beginning. Being the middle child of a trilogy usually hurts and The Desolation of Smaug isn't immune. Lots of filler for a trilogy that's based on a thin book compared to it's brethren. The group continues on their merry way to the mountain, get captured again, Gandalf leaves them again and they put the pressure on the young(?) hobbit, this time face to face with a dragon. The film ends in cinematic blue balls as the dragon, once getting a golden shower, is ready to eff the ess out of the town nearby and the credits start rolling. I yawned a lot. I’m a sucker for these type of films, so I’m obviously biased than most will be to this, so I had a great time with ‘Red Right Hand’, which was a very graphic and violent backwoods crime thriller with some exciting action scenes. It’s not a wholly original film, we’ve this type of film plenty of times, but I was very engaged and invested in these characters. The film centers on Cash, who is trying to live an honest and quiet life, taking care of his niece Savannah in the Appalachian hills of Odim County. When the sadistic Queenpin Big Cat who runs the town forces him back into her services, Cash learns he’s capable of anything, even killing to protect the town and the only family he has left. As the journey gets harder, Cash is drawn into a nightmare that blurs the lines between good and evil. The film was directed by the brother duo Ian and Eshom Nelms and it’s a return to form to their underrated ‘Small Town Crime’ after the disappointing ‘Fatman’. The action scenes are intense and had me saying oh shit a few times, including a kneecap moment that was unexpected. The film is a bit of a slow burn, but I feel the ending and payoff overall was very satisfying, as tension is build at a great pace. The religious themes thankfully aren’t preachy. . . I’ve never been really big on Orlando Bloom, but I was surprised by how good he was, especially his southern accent. He’s very believable as a tough criminal, who’s really about that life. I love that he has a good head on his shoulder often knowing how to keep his composure, and not acting like a wild man which tends to benefit him. I grew up watching Andie MacDowell playing lovable roles in many romantic films, so it was fascinating seeing her play a crime queen pin and I have to say I was very impressed by how she made Big Cat feel like a very threatening figure that you don’t want to cross. While not being comical, you can sense she had a blast playing against type as she seemed to embrace inflicting pain and personifying the most evil woman that has ever lived.
