French Immersion Trip 2024: What is daily life like for teenagers in another country? What do they study at school and how do the teachers deliver their lessons? What do they do with their friends for fun? Are their families like mine? Over spring break, 24 of our French students found the answers to these questions and more during their two-week stay in France. The heart of Friends School’s language immersion trips abroad is the homestay experience where students are linguistically and culturally immersed. During the trip, each student lived with a French family in the region of Lyon for 10 days, going to school with their hosts, spending time with their friends, and attending their activities. Other highlights from the trip included: visits to the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, a guided historical walking tour around the Jardin du Luxembourg that focused on prominent Black women in history whose work and lives were connected to the park, a cruise on the Seine highlighting the city’s architecture, exploring some of the neighborhoods, eating in cafés, and of course, going up the Eiffel Tower at night to see the beautiful City of Light. #BaltimoresFirstSchool #ImAFriendsKid #TheJourneyMatters #StudyAbroad

🌸 Introducing Juniper’s “Floral Echos”! 🌿 Juniper explored cyanotype printing to create this masterpiece for the Boots & Bling Silent Auction. Cyanotype is an antique photographic process where light-sensitive fabric captures anything that casts a shadow into blue monochromatic prints. Working together, the children collected flowers from the gardens around the school and arranged them on the cyanotype fabric. Excitement filled the air as the fabric transformed under the sun's rays. But the real magic happened when the children rinsed the fabric in cool water! Juniper collaborated with Mr. Royer to craft custom wood frames, adding a captivating 3D effect to their cyanotypes. Part I of II Russian Immersion Trip 2024: Our world language program strives to instill in its students a passion and curiosity for becoming more deeply interconnected with cultures spanning the globe. Our students develop linguistic proficiency, become well-versed in cultural comparisons, and travel abroad as part of our language immersion program. Over spring break, 10 of our Russian students traveled to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan for a 15-day trip of a lifetime. Students lived with Russian-speaking Kyrgyz families, attended classes, participated in activities with Kyrgyz peers, and engaged in cultural activities and excursions. Eight of our Upper School students along with Director of Quaker Life Anna Melville ’01 and Upper School English teacher Mike Paulson attended the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) Spring Lobby Weekend. The group spent three days in Arlington, Va. and Washington, D.C. along with 350 other young adults, learning about Indian Boarding Schools (IBS) and the intergenerational trauma these institutions caused to over 100,000 native peoples. They also had the chance to lobby the offices of Senators Cardin and Van Hollen, as well as Congressman Ruppersberger, encouraging them to support the Truth and Healing Commission on the Indian Boarding Schools Act. FCNL’s lobbying connects Quaker testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship with issues and legislation in Washington, D.C. Each year in March, the Alumni Association Board hosts the 100 Nights Dinner for the senior class to celebrate 100 nights until graduation. Some things just come full circle. From taking me to my prom (swipe to the last photo to see us as babies in 2005) to daddy-daughter sweetheart dances with our almost 5 year old, never did I ever see life unfolding like this when I put on that pink cupcake dress 19 years ago and drove to Cafe Escadrille for that senior rite of passage with Alex. Quick testimony: God is intentional about reminding of His unfailing love when you are experiencing a major transition in your life. Me: Called my financial institution, and most times, I prefer to speak with a representative. Rep. Answers: Hi! This is Janette (pronounced Jeanette). How can I help you today? Me: Wow. Your name is Janette. (By the way that's my Mother's name) I went on to share with her about the recent passing of my mother and how powerful of a moment this was for me to see the love of God reflected toward me in this call. Rep. (Janette): Offers her condolences. We handle business, and she tells me about the survey at the end of the call...lol. Of course, I gave her all 5's. She was a God-send that day. Later that week, I received the plant that is pictured below from Janette on behalf of my financial institution. It was unexpected and heartwarming. I know that they have programs specifically designed for this reason, but it still takes the effort of the individual to make the action possible. AND...
