JOHNNY (2003) would've been Kalyan's MONKEY MAN (2024) given the love for his family god Hanuman, along with the communal harmony messages and election satires he smuggled through the lyrics of songs like "Naaraazu Kaakuraa" and "Raavoyi maa intiki", but uhmmmmmm, current Kalyan can't do a Monkey Man both physically as well as politically. P.S. Mandatory annual Johnny rewatch time around its anniversary for me, and I just happened to stumble on "Based on O Henry's The Last Leaf" in the film's Wiki page... I am not sure if someone edited the page recently or if I missed seeing it all these years, but The Last Leaf always comes to my mind during Johnny's second half in many of Johnny-Geetha conversations and of course, the tree Geetha stares at towards the end along with the film bookended by that bird shot! - Berhman's masterpiece was the last leaf he painted on the wall, and Johnny's masterpiece might very well be Geetha herself as a painting that's brought to life with his blood.

It's not always flowers. Sometimes, it's the leaves that one might count on. When a lover closes his eyes, he remembers a tree - the lush greenery of the last spring spent in her arms. Before the leaves would droop and dry and fall, he leaves. Because he dreads the very sight of a dead tree. And so does she. He's a deserter. But she stays with the tree. Why does she? To tell Pakhi, that the last leaf on the dying tree wouldn't fall down to complete her story; To tell her that the most ruinous rumor in the world is that a man never loved a woman; To tell her that it was his undying love for her that made him leave; To tell her that not all stories must be complete; Varun must return. And then, he must leave too. She won't care even if the last leaf falls for she'll remember that it had stayed while they grew in love.
