📚Happy National Independent Bookstore Day!📚 I couldn’t do any shopping today so I thought why not do a stack of all the books I’ve purchased through my three local bookstores in the past yearish. There are some absolute chonks in this one. I 100% recommend The Silent Gods books. It’s a grimdark epic fantasy, origin story of a dark lord. I blew through book one in 24hrs I could not put it down. I’m currently making my way through Cahill’s thick boyos and definitely recommend them. The HG prequel was amazing. It delivered such a great, if not a little unnerving, story of President Snow. Remarkably Bright Creatures is so worth the read!! I have yet to read the rest! 😄 Of my three stores, one closed down within the past year. It was our only new/used bookstore in the area and I am so bummed about it. BOOK REVIEW: TITLE: Demon Copperhead (audiobook) AUTHOR: Barbara Kingsolver NARRATOR: Charlie Thurston RATING: ★★★★ This was my first time reading Barbara Kingsolver’s work, and I LOVED IT! I’m glad I chose the audiobook version because the narrator, Charlie Thurston, did such an amazing job. His voice is clear and concise, and the way he gives each character such a distinct voice is just incredible. Demon’s life from childhood (enduring foster care) to adulthood (battling with addiction) will make you laugh, cry, gasp, and truly break your heart at times. The only problem I had with this otherwise great story was the ending. The last chapter felt rushed, and the conclusion left me feeling a bit confused. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll just say I didn’t see that one coming. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone, and I can’t wait to read more of Kingsolver’s work. Oh yeah, almost forgot...if you’re the type who doesn’t like cursing, then you might want to skip this one because there is A LOT. The Archive of the Forgotten by A J Hackwith (Hell’s Library #2)📚 2024 Count: 54 Rating: 3.5⭐ (Synopsis taken from Waterstones website) I’m really enjoying this series so far, it’s so clever and fun and I’m loving the magical world within it. I definitely wanted a bit more from this book, as much as I love the world and the characters in it, this very much felt like a middle book. I think I just wanted a bit more from this book, but I still love the idea behind this.

Not my favorite by Gilly MacMillan, honestly it was a bit rambling and I hate the majority of the characters. I still was super curious about what was going on and there was some good twists with a satisfying conclusion. And honestly, some people are disasters so having characters who are disasters was kinda realistic. What She Knew will always be my fave from this author and it’s such a good book. The Return by Rachel Harrison 👻 4/5⭐️ "Her friend disappeared. A stranger came back." It's always fun reading a local author!🦬 Having read this author before, I knew there would be some sort of supernatural element involved. However, despite my best guesses, I was not able to guess correctly this time😂. A fast, spooky, creepy read! I wish we had more information on certain things at the end, like what happened to certain characters and something else I can't really say without spoiling the ending🙊. Overall, it was a good read.

I’ll start off my saying this is another knockout by a great author. Mad About You starts off slowly, easing you in, lulling you into false security. I honestly had no idea where things were going until about Chapter 10 when I was suddenly gripped by the collar and tugged in close—and the twists didn’t stop until I was reading the last few pages and wiping away tears. Mhairi is so good at crafting these slice-of-life stories that don’t move the way you’d expect them to. No clichés here. She writes lilting tales of regular life happenings—glimpses of folks going through something slightly beyond the mundane, nothing fantastical—but presents them in a beautiful and relatable way. Her characters learn about themselves and uncover some universal truths, which almost any reader can relate to, all in lovely prose. By the mid-point, my heart was in my throat and my stomach had dropped to the floor. Libraries and book blurbers (official job title?) are so bad at summarizing books like Mhairi’s and Emily Henry’s; they try to squeeze them into romance boxes but there’s so much more there! The romance here feels like a subplot to a story that stays with you—though the romance is no less valuable as the love in this one is so dang sweet and arrives at just the right time. It felt a little like “take a kid to work day” with a visit to @blueheronbooks in Uxbridge! Today is #canadianindependentbookstoreday so thought i would bring the littlest and one of my goddaughters to wander the bookstore. Little did they know, they were about to meet a very special guest THE GRUFFALO! Which was my B’s most favourite book for about 2 yrs. ✨The Best Way To Bury Your Husband by Alexia Casle ✨ 🍳🪴🌊⛺️(it’s by planting a garden and hiding the bodies underneath, btw) • Sally is a middle aged woman who has been abused by her husband, Jim, for over 20 years - and it has only gotten worse due to the COVID lockdown. One morning when defending herself, she hits Jim with a frying pan, instantly killing him. By chance, she ends up meeting some of the other women in her neighborhood who have also killed their abusive husbands during lockdown. So, they devise a plan to hide the bodies and make it look like a freak accident, that none of the wives were involved in. • I enjoyed reading this book, as it was a nice change of pace from the thrillers I have been reading lately. At the library, it was marked as “mystery”, though I really wouldn’t consider this book a mystery at all. It was more of a story about women’s empowerment and finding freedom after abuse. 📚 I wrote a substack post about a reading experience that was self-defining for me as a researcher. It ends with a lot of questions, and, maybe frustratingly, barely any answers. It reminded me an old professor of Russian literature, from whom, exactly 10 years ago, I heard perhaps the wisest and most important thing anybody told me at university. It was the idea that coming up with a very good question is a perfectly good result of an undergrad thesis. At the time we were in our phase of writing our theses, where everybody feels pressured to make some claim or present an unparalleled finding. To make a big, intelligent statement. Quite understandably, too: you read all those excellent studies and want to produce something similar. And if you can do that, that's very cool. But let’s be realistic, at 21, it is very unlikely to happen. A decade later, I cannot stress enough the importance of asking questions. If a long process of trying to answer a research question leads you to formulating not really an answer but a better question, you should be proud. That’s a win. And not in a “let's support and celebrate every little step” way. I genuinely think it's an achievement that's very underrated. Funny Story by Emily Henry. 💙 To say i devoured this book would be an understatement. Funny story has become my favourite Emily Henry book in one winning sweep. 🌼 I tremendously enjoyed reading Daphne and Miles going from being the Ex of each others ex’s to two broken-hearted friends, to viewing each other in a different light to falling in love. The chemistry, the growing of characters (specially Daphne), unlikely friendships and finally letting go of the past and what holds you back. Lost & Found Book 4 ✔️🥰 Again, there are similarities in this one that were in the others. It kind of made me roll my eyes a little but didn’t make me love this one any less. And…. I was definitely right to be excited for this one. I love Roan. He’s definitely my favorite Hartley right now. This one was just so full of family love and support, I actually teared up at least 3 times. 🤷🏻♀️ I think the only thing I didn’t like about this one was Roan’s nickname for Aspen. I kind of hated it. Haha. I think this one was a little spicier than the others. Annnnnd Lost & Found book 3…. ✔️ I do love this little town of Cedar Ridge but a lost of crazy shit sure does happen here! I don’t know if I loved Grae as much as the Hartley boys, but I still loved her story. I understood her anger in some parts about everyone being overwhelming about her diagnosis because I also wanted everyone to stop talking about it. 🤷🏻♀️ I really loved Caden and his dynamic with both the family and Grae. Gotta be honest…. I’m excited to read about Roan next.
Loved this Book! Over 10 years ago on a work trip I saw an ESPN documentary called "No Limits" about free diver Audrey Mestre's attempt to break the No Limit freedive world record and if you have an afternoon and want to watch a crazy good documentary, I highly recommend (I'm interested to hear your thoughts if you do). Because of that documentary, when I saw this book I knew it was a must read! This book is about a journalist's journey to understand the world of freediving, while also sprinkling in the science behind freediving, the ocean, and animals that call it home. Something that I always enjoy about an audiobook is when the book is read by the author. I think that always gives the audiobook something special.
Book 2 in the Lost & Found Series complete! TW for this one: domestic violence. The Hartley family is adorable and you can’t help but to love them. You fall in love with them all in book one and this one just keeps it going. And Nash might be my favorite Hartley! 🤷🏻♀️ Some of the story played out very similarly to the Holt and Wren story but not enough to ruin the book for me.
