𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐝 On our way back from Lake Shawnee, I decided to stop through Thurmond, West Virginia. In the early 1900s, this town was booming due to the heavy flow of coal coming from the mines. The depot saw 75,000 passengers a year. With stores, a hotel & bank, Thurmond was thriving. That was until the switch to diesel locomotives & the mines closing. Now it’s apart of the New River Gorge National Park as to preserve the history of the town. As of 2022, Thurmond has a population of 3. I highly recommend checking it out. My “side trip” on the way home from Tennessee put me into the ghost town of Thurmond,WV. 👻 Thurmond was once an up and coming coal mining town along the New River Gorge in the 1880’s. Due to many issues,the town eventually started to decline and by 1950, it was desolate.I had an interesting time visiting this small area and walking around looking at whats left. Part 2 of our quick trip to West Virginia and New River Gorge National Park. We also took the time to visit the Thurmond historic train district this time around! It made for a few great photo opportunities, but there wasn't really much to do here for the time it took to drive out here. We did enjoy seeing the train depot and walking past the ghost town buildings. There's definitely a lot of history here!

2023 wasn’t the most creative year for me. I had a few freelance projects here and there, all grateful to be working on. Still, every day I’d come home tired. My weekends turned into recovery days from a 9-5 that I still enjoyed, though the cycle left me feeling uninspired, unmotivated to create. This last month I’ve started picking up the camera again, designing/editing, slowly getting back into a healthier mindset. Doing the things that bring me joy while furthering my creative career, in balance with the 9-5 to support myself and the wonderful people I have in my life. 11-6-23 Made a quick stop down a long mountain road to visit the ghost town of Thurmond, West Virginia. Back in its heyday, this place was like the wild wild west! It's known for lots of poverty, drunken debauchery, and the longest continuously running poker game in history! Now there isn't much left but some old buildings and houses you can't go into. The visitor center had already closed for the season, but the ranger said at one time there weren't even trees on the hillside because it was covered with little run down shacks where people lived. I'm sure there are plenty of ghosts here from that time period. Also, this is officially the second least used Amtrack station in the country (the least used being somewhere in Texas). New River Gorge NP: This gorge was once an industrial powerhouse filled with over 80 coal mines and towns but is now a nature retreat and adventurists play-land. We stopped at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, checked out the views of the river and pondered whether we could muster a jump off the New River Gorge Bridge (pictured with my hubby’s cousin Michele). The abandoned town of Thurmond was once a thriving community boosted by the coal industry. For over 80 years trains were the primary method of travel, linking over 50 New River communities to each other. The Great Depression, the railroad’s switch from steam to locomotive engine and the U.S. growing love of the automobile all had a negative impact on Thurmond’s economy. Thurmond, West Virginia was once a thriving railroad town. More than 20 passenger trains came through this town daily along with trains transporting coal from the many mines that were located along the New River in the gourge. The slowdown of the mining industry along with the depression hurt this area. There once were two active banks, a post office, pharmacy and various other business and now it's just a few empty buildings along with some shuttered homes. #thurmond is an abandoned ghost town in #westvirginia and a part of the New River National Park and Preserve. No cell service here. Park ranger told me "the NPS and GPS don't mix." A few buildings are still standing but access is closed off. 5 people also still live here. I saw 2 of the houses are renting theirs out via Airbnb lol. The railroad track is still active. An Amtrak comes 3 times a week and CSX coal trains come through a few times a day. We caught one as we were leaving. #newrivergorgenationalpark #nationalpark #ghosttown #travel
