Species Saturday! Melon-headed whales are some of our favorite species to encounter! Their average pod size is in the hundreds making their encounters always spectacular with so many animals in the area! They are one of the smaller blackfish species here in Kona and tend to spend most of their life far offshore in the pelagic zone. 📸 Captian @andrew.aggergaard #melonheadedwhale #melonheadedwhales #toothedwhale #toothedwhales #hawaii #konahawaii #dolphins #whales #whalewatching #whalewatch #pelagicwhalewatching #yearroundwhalewatching

Earlier this week i met some truly gigantic orca @natural_history_museum of London. The maximal total body length of these animals should be near 10 meters. Except the greatest of sizes seem based on estimations rather than clear measurements taken. So there is still some work to be done there. #whalewednesday #whalesofinstagram #cetecean #toothedwhale #odontoceti #killerwhale #orcinusorca #fossilwhale #whalebone #naturalhistorymuseumlondon #londonresearch #paleontology

‘Blackfish’ Pilot Whales are toothed whales and live their entire lives, with some living into their 50s, in maternal pods. The males leave to mate with females of other pods and return to the maternal pod after a few months. Pilot whales are deep divers, over 1000 feet at times, and feed mainly on squid and some fishes. #whales #pilotwhales #cetaceans #toothedwhale #toothedwhale #marinemammals #ocean #oceanlife #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #underwater #underwaterphotography #underwaterphotographer #sony #sonyphotography #oldredimages #nature #diver #divephotography #divephotography #nauticam

Whale season is officially in full swing! I wanted to give a shout-out to my good friend Simon and his amazing company Ocean Ecoventures @ocean_eco 💙 and all the fantastic people who work there. If you’ve always wanted to go out whale watching and haven’t known where to go, or never gotten around to it - I really recommend going out with Ocean Eco. The team is exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate about what they do, it’s always an unreal experience, no matter the weather conditions, and every trip gives back to conservation efforts. Not that long ago I was trying to get my foot in the door with some companies that were involved in the things I wanted to pursue - I met Simon and he gave me a chance even though he really didn’t need any more employees. I’m so grateful that he did, because not only did I have some incredible days on the water, but I made some truly special friends, who have always encouraged me to pursue things even when I didn’t fully believe in myself. I’ve had some of the greatest days ever out with @ocean_eco and those experiences are irreplaceable and unique memories that will stay with me forever, and continue to inspire me moving forward. This was one such evening where we got to head out for sunset and watch the T137s travelling around the Gulf Islands. Pictured here is T137A in all his backlit glory.✨

Our field work in the Eastern half of the Gulf of Mannar has come to an end. We had some crazy encounters e.g . Over 8 species feeding in the same area in very large numbers, resightings of Bryde's whales, killer whales feeding. We encountered over 15 species of cetaceans viz., blue whale, Bryde's whale, Baleen whale sp., minke whales, sperm whales, dwarf sperm whale, pilot whales, killer whales, false killer whales, Risso's Dolphin, fraser's dolphins, common bottlenose Dolphin, indo Pacific bottlenose, pantropical spotted, spinners, beaked whale sp. I am greatly indebted to @joshua_w_barton @mudskipper.in @cainedelacy for facilitating my field work. These magnificent beasts swam the seas that once covered the land where I now live.. You are looking at two incredible Squalodon antverpiensis teeth, found pretty local to me, in Antwerp, Belgium. Once upon a time, long before dolphins and whales as we know them today roamed the seas, there were entirely different representatives of this animal group. One of them was Squalodon. Its name comes from the Latin 'squalus,' meaning shark, and 'odontos,' the Greek word for tooth. So, you could say it was a shark-toothed whale! When it was first described in the 19th century, all they had was a fragment of a jaw. They actually thought the fossil belonged to a reptile. Nowadays, after studying more complete skeletons, it's been revealed that Squalodon was indeed a toothed whale. Its teeth looked different from those of most toothed whales; with their triangular shape and sharp edges, they resembled more the teeth of a shark. Also, the teeth weren't all the same shape, just like in sharks. Squalodon's teeth protruded far from its mouth. In the Miocene precursor of the North Sea, Squalodon would have been a formidable predator, causing fish and other prey to flee in haste. Appearance-wise, Squalodon was about three meters long, with a streamlined body for swift movement through water. Its long jaws were a characteristic of a fast hunter. Its dentition consisted of incisors, canines, and molars, each with its own shape - a so-called 'heterodont' dentition. Such a type of dentition is absent in modern toothed whales, as they only have one type of teeth. Squalodon lived in open waters, preying on small fish and squid, much like dolphins and porpoises do today. It likely used echolocation to locate prey in the dark depths of the ocean, just like most modern toothed whales. It had a flexible neck, enabling it to track the movements of its prey during the hunt. Squalodon wasn't specialized in a particular type of food. #squalodon #antwerp #whale #toothedwhale #miocene #history #prehistory #prehistoric #dino #dinosaur #predator #paleo #paleontology #fossil #fossils #fossilsforsale #fossiladdict #fossilcollector #fossilcollection #biology #curiosity #geology

And it's... April!  Have you heard about the ginkgo-toothed beaked whale? Meet this month's illustration from my Feeding Giants Postcard Calendar! Not a lot is known about these mysterious and quirky-looking cetaceans because they are difficult to study. But what do they eat? I couldn't get a solid answer online so I reached out to a cetologist friend of mine and she said that researches can make educated guesses as to their diet, but it is still unconfirmed (shout out to @offshoreorca). This is why, if you look closely, you will see the question marks woven into the sweater pattern. Don't you love that their is so much out there in the world waiting to be discovered?!  APRIL  'Ginkgo-toothed beaked whales are named for the shape of their two protruding teeth. It is thought that their diet most likely consists of squid and possibly some fishes as well.' Here is a little more about ginkgo-toothed beaked whales: 🩶 our understanding of their distribution is based on limited surveys, incidental sightings and beached animals  🩶 IUCN conservation status: Data Deficient 🩶 the two large teeth (called tusks) are about 10cm/4in wide 🩶 they were first discovered off of Japan and named for the resemblance of their teeth to the sacred gingko tree #yyjarts  #yyj  #victoriabc  #vancouverisland  #bccanada  #art  #illustration  #ink  #watercolour  #watercolor  #cetaceans  #toothedwhale #ginkgo #science #marinebiology  #ginkgotoothedbeakedwhale

- Aureia rerehua, spesies Paus bergigi Patanistoidae baru dari Selandia Baru - . Spesies baru paus bergigi purba telah ditemukan, Diberi nama Aureia rerehua, paus bergigi purba ini diperkirakan hidup sekitar 22 juta tahun lalu di perairan Selandia Baru. . Pada Fosil tengkoraknya terlihat memiliki gigi yang aneh dan terbuka lebar, menunjukkan bahwa ia mungkin berburu mangsa dengan menjebak ikan di antara giginya ketika kedua rahang menutup, menurut sebuah makalah baru yang diterbitkan di Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand. . Short-finned pilot whales are one of our most commonly sighted toothed whales along the Kona coast. Though nothing is “common” & seen every day in the deep offshore waters, we do have a community of Pilot whales whose home is the vast Kona coastline. According to @cascadiaresearch there are an estimated 19,000- 20,000 pilot whales in Hawaiian waters. They are often seen with oceanic white tip sharks following behind them in hopes to pick up the whales food scraps for an easy meal! Seems the sharks have figured out how to work smarter not harder. 🤓🦈💙 Photos by @divewithdevoni #kona #kailuakona #ocean #pilotwhales #oceanicwhitetip #sharks #whales #toothedwhale

Focused On Nature wishes you a happy World Whale Day! While the term ‘whale’ is typically reserved for baleen whales and larger toothed whales, all cetaceans including dolphins are actually whales. Of these, there are 16 species of baleen whales, 49 species of dolphins & porpoises, 4 species of river dolphins, and many more species of toothed whales. Despite the vast number of species, one third of all cetacean species are at risk of extinction due to climate change, commercial whaling, ship strikes, bycatch, pollution, and more. Nothing in the world is as exciting, enticing or memorable as being in the water with a whale or dolphin. Encounters can never last long enough, emotions cannot be transferred fast enough, and experiences are almost always euphoric. Focused On Nature is a proud partner of @whalesorg and of the @wilddolphinproject who work tirelessly to raise awareness for and protect these species. We are also very happy in the knowledge that, through other partner organisations such as @mission_blue, the @bluemarinefoundation, @oceana, and the @sharkconservationfund, we are helping push for more (or bigger) Marine Protected Areas, which ensure better safety for all species in a designated area!

🐳Happy World Whale Day!🐳 The Beluga, also known as white whales, are small toothed whales that are well adapted for life in the arctic seas. Their white coloration helps them to blend in with their icy environment, helping them to stay hidden from preadators such as orcas and polar bears. Like most toothed whales, Beluga use echolocation to help find food in dark waters with their round heads, known as the melon. However, theirs is special given the fact that they can flex their shape, which changes the sounds they make. Which is why they are nicknamed sea canaries. Sadly these whales, like many arctic animals, face harsh changes in their environment, mostly due to rising temperatures, overfishing, and mining for oil. So please remember to live sustainably and learn to conserve our resources to help these remarkable creatures survive in our world. Wild fact: Beluga are one of few cetaceans that have flexing necks, making them able to move their heads up, down, and side to side. World Whale Day! 🐋🫶 The most playful, fun, beautiful creatures. I'd spend everyday out on the water with these guys if I could. Some favourite facts: The strongest muscle in the animal kingdom is the humpback whale peduncle. The tail muscle that makes them so capable of launching their entire bodies out the water - up to 40,000kg! 💪 Orcas are actually the largest species of dolphin, however all dolphins are toothed whales. Making killer whales both dolphins and whales 🐬 Humpbacks have high site fidelity, meaning they return to their same summer and winter waters, to breed & birth and feed, respectively. This means we get to see the same whales year after year, sometimes with calves in tow 🥰 Despite the mature male orca being the biggest of the pod, orcas are matricharchal - meaning the family is led by the oldest, wisest female ♀️ Humpback whales are baleen whales, so even though they're huge, around 15m long, their throat is about the size of a human fist, and their main food source is tiny fish like herring and krill 🐟 #worldwhaleday #orca #killerwhale #humpbackwhale #Britishcolumbia #baleenwhale #toothedwhale #dolphins #whales #pacificnorthwest #canadianwildlife #whalefacts

Marine Biology Facts: MBF #71: Sperm whales - The Moby Dick whale Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales, and the largest toothed predator in the world, with males reaching lengths of up to 20 meters. They are known for their distinct square-shaped heads and can dive to impressive depths of over 3,000 meters in search of prey, mainly giant squids. These whales communicate using a series of clicks called echolocation and have the largest brain of any animal on Earth. They are capable of emitting sounds at a volume of 230 decibels – more than an aircraft jet engine at takeoff – making the sperm whale the loudest animal in the world. Sperm whales have a unique organ called the spermaceti organ in their heads, which was historically thought to contain sperm oil. This organ helps with buoyancy control and echolocation. Males often have scars on their bodies, believed to be from battles with squid or other males. Additionally, they have a natural ability to produce ambergris. Ambergris, a rare substance produced in the digestive systems of sperm whales, is used in the perfume industry for its unique scent-fixing properties. Its value can vary, but it is highly sought after, with prices reaching thousands of dollars per ounce. The exact value depends on factors like quality, size, and market demand. These whales were famously featured in Herman Melville's novel "Moby-Dick," where the white whale, Moby Dick, is a sperm whale. #marbiofacts #spermwhale ocean #toothedwhale

Today was one of the best encounters I have ever seen of a sperm whale. MV Quest really is the best whale watching vessel I have worked on so far in my career with outside decks low enough to get close and see the whole whale! Such a privilege. It's a strange thing that has been happening recently, we never really had sperm whales here in the past and if we did it was always a rare sight. This year I have encountered over seven separate individuals. Could it be food availability they are suddenly drawn to? Or a combination of environmental factors? Time, research and observation will tell I hope. For now, we will continue working around them as responsibly and gently as possible to minimise any disturbance and bask in their beauty 💙 Thank you for snapping these awesome shots @thenomadcarl , and Captain @hordurholm67 for finding them! My PI asked me to illustrate a sperm whale for his annual New Year greeting card. 🐳 Now, why is the sperm whale named the way it is? It’s enough of an awkward question that 5 y/o me once asked my dad what a sperm was (he said he’d tell me when I’m older—still waiting, pops). Inside that gargantuan skull is actually not as much bone as one might anticipate. About half of the soft fatty tissue is the “melon,” which all odontocetes (toothed whales) have to produce echolocation clicks. The second half is a big sac-o’-goop called the “spermaceti organ,” which produces a white, waxy substance that solidifies at temperatures cooler than the animal’s body temp. The spermaceti is likely used for buoyancy control and accentuates the sperm whale’s echolocation. It is this material that gives the sperm whale its name AND made it a prime target for the industrial whaling industry. Not only did it produce oil, but waxes that would be used in cosmetics, candles, and so on. Thankfully, sperm whales today are no longer hunted in such numbers. Many populations are still vulnerable but are recovering. Tags • #cachalot #toothedwhale #spermwhale #marinebiology #scientificillustration #odontocete #whale #ocean

Goodbye, 2023! Much like this Type D killer whale, I hope only for the best “fishes” for you all. This Antarctic species*** of killer whale feeds on deep-dwelling, cold water fishes—such as this unfortunate Patagonian toothfish. There is currently only one recognized species of killer whale, Orcinus orca, but genetic, morphological, and behavioral differences between ecotypes and populations raise the very strong possibility that there are multiple. In fact, I’ll just say it—there ARE more than one species of killer whale, but we’re still working out the details. Type D is a very strong contender for a standalone taxon, both looking quite different than your “standard-issue” KWs and having strong genetic differentiation from their peers despite territorial overlap. I think they’re neat! Next year, I aim to bring more Cenozoic species to the paddock. Got any recommendations? Let me know! Baleen vs teeth The evolutionary path of whales is quite extraordinary. Early ancestors of modern whales once had legs and walked on land. They diverged into two groups, the baleen whales and the toothed whales, with completely different feeding techniques. Toothed whales hunt their prey one by one whereas baleen whales hunt in batch, filtering huge amounts of tiny prey from the sea. Photo 1: a baleen plate of a juvenile humpback whale Photo 2 & 3: a sperm whale tooth (next to a banana for comparison), looking like a tortilla Thanks @evogez for bringing these on to our tour to show everyone 🐋 and thanks @danieljohnbenton for the shoot 📸 • • • #whales #cetacea #cetaceans #baleen #baleenplate #humpbackwhale #mysteceti #toothedwhale #spermwhale #whaletooth #odontoceti

#olympustg6 #underwaterphotography #underwater #scubadiving #apnea #submarinismo #submarinisme #marinescience #sealife #atlantic #riadevigo #tursiops #tursiopstruncatus #truncatus #dofi #dofimular #dofi #mular #delfinmular #delfin #mular #bottlenosedolphin #bottlenose #dolphin #arroaz #grey #odontocet #toothed #toothedwhale #whale #cetacean #gatsdemar

Orcas, like the rest of the toothed whales only have one blow hole. This is because the other one has been modified into a ‘click’ making apparatus that they use for echolocation. #orca #killerwhale #orcalove #pnw #t101 #transientorca #biggskillerwhale #toothedwhale #whalefact #whalesnation #bewhalewise #telephotolens #explorebc #wildlifephotography

Did you know there are other cetaceans in our waters other than humpbacks and orca? One of the more commonly seen on our tours is the Harbour Porpoise! 🐬 These are the smallest of the species we have here, measuring in under 2 meters when fully grown! These little porpoises feed on small schooling fish, the same thing as our massive humpback whales. This means that they are often spotted in the same area when there is lots of food there! Have you ever seen one of these tiny toothed whales?

A special treat on todays trip… common dolphins! Which are actually not so common. Although we have several species of dolphins present here off of New England, we’re only lucky enough to see them on a handful of trips throughout our season. It’s just as exciting every time 🐬🤍 📸: Kali Palmer #whales #travel #dolphins #commondolphins #toothedwhale #vacation #ocean #animals #animalencounter #savethewhales #wildlife #whalewatch #whalesofinstagram #whalesnation #passportocean #capecod #stellwagonbank #marinemammals #whalewatcher #hyanniswhalewatcher

Beluga! Beluga! I was commissioned to do a beluga and I couldn’t be happier with how he turned out. The curves of these whales pose so many challenges for me. Description: (Physeter Macrocephalus)) Sperm whale is also called Cachalot. Its also the largest living toothed predator in the world. 🐳 Feature Friday - Curvier's beaked whale 🐳 These marine mammals are toothed whales (odontocetes), that have one blowhole and are 5-7m in length. They have robust bodies with a stubby beak and a pale goose-like head. Colour: they range in colour from grey-brown, dark blue-grey, and pale red-brown. However, calves present all-dark but the pale head develops as they age. Behaviour: elusive, slow moving and they have short rest periods. They can be inquisitive near boats and breach occasionally. Sex: mature males have a pair of protruding teeth upwards from their lower jaw, but females and immature males do not have these. 2/3rds of the way down their back is their dorsal fin Pod size: 3-12 or singleton (mature males) ⭐ Fun Fact! ⭐ Despite them being rather small in comparison to well known large whales, for example the Blue Whale (being the largest Mammal known to live on Earth), or the sperm whale, which are the 2nd deepest diving whale reaching depths of up to 610m. The Curvier's whale are the deepest and longest diving whales reaching up to 3000m for 2hrs!! I just find that incredible 😱 Sources: 📚 a field guide for ORCA 🎥 Sea Shepherd Conservation Society #whales #marinemammals #curviersbeakedwhale #toothedwhale #deepdiving #featurefriday #marinebiology #orca #oceanblueprints

Killer whale, Orca, Schwertwal. These animals have meant so much to me throughout my life. They're magnificent, complex, incredibly social, and sensitive beings. Even managed to get a perfect grade formy presentation on them in 4th grade (my poster was pretty damn good and I included hydrophone recordings of them) I've consumed a lot of the available media surrounding them and our fascination with them. Wether it's their matriarchal pods, the different ecotypes, their languages and dialects. These animals have forced us anthropocentric beings to face our egos and free the word culture from our grip, when describing the varying habits, behaviours and lifestyles of the different ecotypes. A word historically reserved solely for human beings. Globally there has always been a fascination with them. I especially love the sculptural depictions by different indigenous tribes from north america (slide 6 as an example) unfortunately not very easy to learn who specifically made these, at least with my research skills. I included a clip of the opening sequence of free willy because to me, as troubling and difficult the framework around making such a film with a wild caught animal is, it also stands for a remarkable movement started by children around the world to set Keiko (Willy) free after the movies completion and success. An example of what is possible in conservation and rehabituation of any wild animals. To learn more about the orca I warmly encourage you to listen to #podoforcas podcast on the southern resident killer whales, or the many available talks and presentations of @orcaingrid mainly looking at the fascinating new zealand orcas. As far as sewing goes, I improvised this little guy, therefore causing me some trouble along the way, but I love her with all her imperfections. And I learned a lot along the way. I really hope I get to see them in the wild someday. 🤍🖤🤍🖤 #killerwhale #orca #podoforcas #schwertwal #stuffedanimals #diy #diyprojects #diysewing #sewing #scrapsoffabric #ecotypes #whales #dolphins #toothedwhale #toys #stuffedanimal #eyepatch #wildlife #conservation #keiko #tilikum #freemorgan #lolitatheorca #blackfish #blackfishmovie
