Sir Henry Guildford (1489-1532) Spot the difference! In the final portrait, Holbein has slimmed down Sir Henry’s face, and also fixed his left eye which he seemed to have some trouble with in the original sketch. The clothing in the final portrait is also sumptuous - I enjoyed the minute detail of Sir Henry’s Garter Collar, of which he was made a Knight in 1526 . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #humanist #sirhenryguildford #Erasmus #comptrollerofthehousehold #holbeinsketch #orderofthegarter #knightofthegarter #stgeorge #holbeinportrait #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

One of Holbein’s early patrons in England was Sir Henry Guildford. Luckily, both the predatory sketch and the finished painting survive in the royal collection today, so it was a treat to get to see them side by side. Sir Henry Guildford probably met Holbein through Sir Thomas More, though he was also one of Erasmus’ correspondents, and he employed the artist to make temporary decorations at Greenwich Palace for the reception of a French diplomatic delegation in 1527. Guildford commissioned Holbein to paint his portrait in the same year - it was a paired portrait with his wife Mary, but her portrait has found its way over to Missouri. In this preparatory drawing, Holbein has concentrated on Guildford’s face, which he has modelled in coloured chalks - his clothing is only briefly recorded in black chalk. Details can be seen where the chalk has been smudged, hatched and dampened to vary the textures. Holbein also used inks in his preparatory sketches to highlight certain features . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #humanist #sirhenryguildford #Erasmus #comptrollerofthehousehold #holbeinsketch #holbeinportrait #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

This is the reverse of the sketch of Sir Thomas More. You can just about see that outlines of the drawing have been pricked with a pin to transfer them to another surface, probably another sheet of paper, which Holbein could work on further. Holbein also used pricking to transfer the cartoon of the Whitehall mural, but this is the only one of his surviving portrait drawings that is pricked. Infrared examination of the final portrait (currently in the Frick Collection in New York) shows how Holbein altered the composition on the panel after he had transferred the initial design, continuing to refine the portrait as he worked . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #humanist #thomasmore #sirthomasmore #morefamilyportrait #familyofthomasmore #holbeinsketch #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

This is a study for the second of 2 commissions from Sir Thomas More, dated 1527 The drawing demonstrates Holbein’s masterful use of coloured chalks and you can really get a sense of his working process - he appears to have erased areas of the brown chalk to give a sheen to More’s fur collar. Small strokes of black chalk around the chin suggest stubble, which can be seen in the final painting (now in the Frick Collection in New York) as is the redness around More’s eyes. There is something else fascinating about this sketch which can be seen on the back…. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #humanist #thomasmore #sirthomasmore #morefamilyportrait #familyofthomasmore #holbeinsketch #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

We’re in gorgeous Christchurch Priory, Dorset this week for our first @henryviiiontour residency! 👑🎶 In 1510, Henry VIII arrived at Christchurch Priory on the first substantial royal progress of his reign. Now, over 500 years later, @thepriorychurch will be hosting an enactment of the pre-Reformation liturgy and music of the Lady Mass and service of Compline as might have been heard during Henry's reign. We're delighted to be joining forces again with Professor Magnus Williamson (Professor of Early Music @newcastleuni) for this research residency as we take on the role of Henry VIII’s ‘riding chapel’ (a slimmed down version of the King’s Gentlemen and Choristers of the Chapel Royal). Archival research shows that the ‘riding chapel’ was often augmented by locally-employed musicians and so we're thrilled to be working closely with the Vicar, Canon Charles Stewart, Priory Director of Music, Simon Earl, and the children and adults in the choirs of Christchurch Priory. Featuring wonderful music from the Tudor Court which can be found on our upcoming project album ‘Henry VIII on Tour’, out later this year @delphian_records 💿 Do pop along to one of our free events if you're in the area! #Henryontour #HenryVIII #Tudormusic #Tudorcourt #compline #LadyMass #Tudorhistory #research #residency #TudorEngland #earlymusic #Ensemble #voices #earlymusicensemble

There is a version of the More Family Portrait by Rowland Lockey at the National Portrait Gallery, and it is HUGE - easily covering floor to ceiling, I wonder if the original was as life sized. This portrait brings five generations of the More family together in an imagined gathering at the home of Sir Thomas More - it is based on the earlier portrait, but Lockey’s version adds the family of More’s grandson to the composition, making a striking statement of the family’s pride in their descent from Thomas More . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #humanist #thomasmore #sirthomasmore #morefamilyportrait #familyofthomasmore #holbeinsketch #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

his daughter Margaret was an important person in the life of Sir Thomas. Margaret More (later Roper) was always in the room, but most often on the sidelines. Author Aimee Fleming shines the light on the importance of Margaret in her new book, Female Tudor Scholar and Writer, the Life and Times of Margaret More Roper. Aimee joins Royals, Rebels, and Romantics to share Margaret’s story and her invaluable contributions to our understanding of Thomas More and the Tudor court. Margaret’s education was not just the learning she received, it’s also the way she uses her voice to tell stories that benefit us hundreds of years later. 1536 marks the year of the downfall of Queen Anne Boleyn. Which were the events that lead to her death? What happened to the passionate woman with a brilliant mind for whom Henry VIII changed the course of English history? This month we will dive into history and try to record the incredible last chapter of her life. In 1536 Anne had been the queen of England for 3 years. She had not been able to produce a son, “only” 3 miscarriages and a daughter Elizabeth who was 2,5 years old. Anne was a force behind the Reformation and had always been known as an outspoken person, passionate and fighting for her own rights and beliefs. Gradually it became clear that what attracted Henry VIll in the first place to Anne, he appreciated less and less in her as a wife and frequent rows between them were recorded. At the same time Jane Seymore and her family were on the rise. The events on 30 April are considered as a real turning point in history: Mark Smeaton, a Flemish musician at Anne´s court, was taken to Cromwell’s house to be interrogated. After 24 hours he confessed adultery with the queen and was sent to the Tower of London. We don´t know why he confessed, maybe we should believe the stories that he was physical  tortured or was he promised a pardon if he confessed? In the evening an argument between Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII took place. Henry had learnt of a dispute between Anne and Sir Henry Norris, where Anne would have accused him of improper feelings for her. On this day Anne Boleyn had seen Henry VIII for the last time. She only lived another 18 days until 19 May on which she was executed.   #anneboleyn #queenanneboleyn #tudorcourt #tudors #thetudors #henryviii #janeseymour #kingsandqueens #ukhistory #historyenthusiast #historylovers #thedownfallofanneboleyn #geschiedenisbeleven #geschichteerleben #historymatters #toweroflondon #historical #womenshistorycircle #womaninhistory #historyuk #medievalhistory #historicalpalaces #elizabeth #igcastles #ighistory #anneboleynportrait {Unbezahltewerbungweilmarkennennung}

Sir John More - Sir Thomas More’s father When Holbein worked on these studies for the group portrait, he worked each drawing in coloured chalks and used a dampened red chalk to create the flesh tone of the sitter’s face. Sketch for the More Family Portrait - by Hans Holbein the Younger On 18 December 1526 More wrote to Erasmus: “Your painter friend, my dear Erasmus, is a wonderful artist. I fear he will not find English soil as rich and fertile as he had hoped. But I shall do my best to make sure it is not completely barren.” This support came in the form of 2 of Holbein’s earliest commissions in England, one of which was the somewhat legendary More Family Portrait. Although Holbein’s finished painting of the family group was sadly destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century, most of Holbein’s studies of the individual sitters survive, as well as a sketch plan for the overall composition which Holbein gave to Erasmus when he returned to Basel in 1528 - photo of which is shown here from the display. Apparently there is a copy of the finished portrait at Nostell Priory in Yorkshire though 👀 . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #thomasmore #sirthomasmore #morefamilyportrait #familyofthomasmore #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

Not a Holbein but still a gorgeous part of the exhibition - this is one of a set of five Flemish tapestries telling the story of Aeneas purchased by Henry VIII in the early 1530s. Made in Brussels and made of woven silk and wool with gilt-metal and silver-wrapped thread, Henry VIII owned more than TWO THOUSAND such tapestries which decorated the walls of his palaces. Masterpieces of Northern European art, artists such as Holbein would have designed tapestries such as these as well as designing other objects d’art such as jewellery, plate, sculpture, architecture, interior design - portrait painting alone would not have earned enough income. Here, Neptune is seen calming a storm which Aeolus, the ruler of winds, has raised to destroy Aeneas’s ships at the bidding of an angry Juno. Aeolus can be seen to the left releasing the winds from their cave, urged by Juno, who commands him with her sceptre. Neptune in a chariot calms the seas and saves Aeneas’s fleet. At the top, the sea nymph Cymothoe pours water to guide the ships away from wreckage on the coast. A rainbow heralds the end of the storm and the brightening of the sky . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #tudortapestry #tapestey #flemishtapestry #reneissanceart #Aeneas #Juno #Neptune #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

The way that Alison Weir is able to transport you directly to the Tudor Court is nothing short of completely breathtaking. The Six Tudor Queens series absolutely stole my heart and opened me up to the world of historical fiction. If you know me, you'll know Tudor England is my roman empire 💙 I was over the moon when Alison released her Tudor Rose series, the first book being The Last White Rose, following the life of Elizabeth of York and her marriage to Henry Tudor (Henry VII). The Heart of the Crown follows king Henry VIII's life from becoming king unexpectedly, through his life with all six of his wives, his health and eventual death at 54. I loved this book because I had the reference from the Tudor Queens series and I loved seeing Henry's perspective. Alison has a new book launching on 9th May called Mary I Queen of Sorrows, I'm so excited to have more insight on what Mary I's life may have been like. #Alisonweir #historicalfictionbooks #historicalfiction #henryviii #tudor #tudorengland #tudorcourt #historian #henryviiitheheartofthecrown #tudorrose #tudorroseseries #historicalfictionseries #sixtudorqueens #alisonweirauthor #alisonweirbooks

“Assertio Septem Sacramentorum adversus Martinum Lutherum” - [‘Defence of the Seven Sacraments against Martin Luther’] - by King Henry VIII Before he even set foot in England, Holbein designed this woodcut for Froben’s edition of Henry VIII’s attack on the reformer Martin Luther, which was published in England in 1521. Luther had criticised the Catholic Church’s assertion that seven sacraments were necessary to achieve grace. Henry’s text defended the Catholic position and won him the title ‘Defender of the Faith’ from the Pope. This title page is copied from one designed by Holbein for Froben. At the bottom is Mucius Scaevola, renowned for defending ancient Rome and used here as a parallel to Henry’s defence of the Papacy. “De Optimo reip. Statu deque nova insula Utopia” - [‘On the Best Kind of a Commonwealth and About the New Island of Utopia’] - by Sir Thomas More “Utopia” was first published in 1516 and made More’s name across Europe. It describes the fictional island of Utopia (which means “no place” in Greek) as a veiled but bold criticism of contemporary society. Froben issued this edition in Basel in 1518, with woodcut illustrations by Hans Holbein and his brother Ambrosius. This border was designed by Hans. The lively putti, and the curling sheet of paper pinned to the arch, on which the book’s title is apparently printed, are typical of his engaging designs. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #froben #reneissanceart #woodcut #thomasmore #sirthomasmore #utopia #thomasmoreutopia #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

further details of Desiderius Erasmus’ portrait - though this is a copy I believe the original might be in London’s National Gallery? From the photos I’ve seen of the original, it is far finer and more detailed and makes this one (which is still amazing) look kind of sad in comparison! Such is Holbein’s skill 😄 Holbein painted Erasmus at least 3 times that we know of. By the mid-1520s, the growth of religious reform in Basel meant that demand for devotional images had greatly reduced, which made up a good portion of Holbein’s work. In August 1526 he set out for England. It is believed he was carrying a letter of introduction from Erasmus to the English lawyer and writer Sir Thomas More, as More confirmed Holbein’s arrival in London in a letter to Erasmus in December 1526, describing the painter’s work as ‘wonderful’ . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #johannesfroben #froben #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

Erasmus’ New Testament - 1522 Holbein designed this border for Froben in 1521. Made in four sections, it shows the progress of life from youthful Indulgence at the bottom along a steep path through a series of gateways to True Happiness at the top. Along the way, man encounters Virtues and Vices such as Fortune and Avarice. Johannes Froben (by Hans Holbein the Younger) and Desiderius Erasmus (after Holbein) Although they now appear very different, these two works were originally hinged together as a pair. They symbolise the friendship of Erasmus and his Basel publisher Johannes Froben. The portrait of Froben, who faces right, is by Holbein. That of Erasmus is a copy of a painting by Holbein and was probably commissioned by Froben to accompany his portrait. Desiderius Erasmus - by Quinten Massys Massys painted this portrait of the scholar Erasmus in his study in 1517, after which Erasmus sent it as a token of friendship to Sir Thomas More in London. Erasmus is a very important person in Holbein’s story as his patron and the key to his later success in London. In around 1525 Hans and his elder brother Ambrosius moved to Basel, where Hans would have been introduced to Erasmus. While there they designed book illustrations, stained glass, religious artworks and making portraits of the city’s wealthy citizens. Both became celebrated, but Ambrosius died in 1519 . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #erasmus #DesideriusErasmus #humanist #quintenmassys #thomasmore #ambrosiusholbein #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

The Virgin and Child c. 1510’s This painting is probably the ‘picture of our Lady holding our Lorde at her brest her robe being redd’, recorded at Whitehall Palace in 1542. It is a copy of a work by the celebrated Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden, and is probably by van der Weyden’s grandson, Goswijn. Battle of the Spurs While Henry VII sought to consolidate his position by arranging European political marriages for his children, his son Henry VIII, who inherited the throne in 1509, used diplomacy and warfare to assert his status as a European monarch. He commissioned paintings to record his greatest diplomatic and military triumphs. In 1512 he invaded France in alliance with the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I. The allies laid siege to the French city of Thérouanne in June 1513. On 16 August, French cavalry attempted to supply their trapped compatriots with food and gunpowder. Henry, leading a joint English and Imperial army, attacked the French horsemen, whose hasty retreat led to the battle’s nickname ‘The Battle of the Spurs’. Thérouanne fell to the English six days later. Henry is shown in the centre of the melee, wearing gold armour and receiving the surrender of the celebrated Chevalier Bayard, who kneels before him. This painting is from the workshop of a (sadly) Unknown Flemish artist. In 1527 Holbein was paid to paint an additional picture of Thérouanne as part of the decorations for a grand diplomatic meeting between the English and the French at Greenwich . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #maximiliani #holyromanemperor #holyromanempire #habsburg #habsburgdynasty #battleofthespurs #therouanne #reneissanceart #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london @royalcollectiontrust

Charles, Duke of Burgundy, later Emperor Charles V Charles, was the son of Philip the Handsome and had also been betrothed to Mary, Henry VIlI’s sister. This painting shows him holding rosemary, symbolising love. It was described in a letter as ‘very badly depicted’ when it was sent to England in 1514. Shortly afterwards, changing diplomatic priorities meant the marriage was cancelled and she married King Louis XII of France instead. In 1516 Charles became King of Spain. In 1519 he became Holy Roman Emperor, making him the most powerful secular ruler in Europe. Charles suffered from an enlarged lower jaw, a congenital deformity that became considerably worse in later Habsburg generations, giving rise to the term “Habsburg jaw”. François I, King of France Francis I inherited the French throne in 1515 - not long after King Louis had married Mary Tudor. Like Henry VIII, Francis welcomed foreign artists at court. Among them was the Flemish painter Joos van Cleve, whose workshop produced many portraits of the French king and is likely who produced this one. This painting was probably presented to Henry by Francis as a diplomatic gift. The sitter is shown as if in conversation, but this air of intimacy is offset by the magnificence of his clothing which was intended to impress the viewer. Henry VII, Bosworth’s victor, sought to consolidate his position by arranging marriages for his children with other European ruling houses. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #katherineofaragon #henryvii #isabellaofcastile #ferdinandofaragon #catholicmonarchs #catalinadearagon #arthurtudor #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london #tourist @royalcollectiontrust

Before Holbein - I deliberately saved this one for St George’s Day! The Family of Henry VII with St George and the Dragon c. 1503-9 By an Unknown Flemish Artist Showing Henry VII and Elizabeth of York united by an angel. Their children are shown to either side, the sons on the left behind their father and the daughters on the right behind their mother. The King and Queen kneel at prayer desks on which Henry VII has a prayer book, orb and sceptre, and Elizabeth of York has a prayer book. The Lancastrian red rose and the portcullis of the Beaufort family are emblazoned on the tents. The red and white colours are those of both St George and Lancastrian livery. Of the princes, only Henry was alive at the time the painting was made as Prince Edmund died aged 1 and Prince Arthur had died in 1502. Of the princesses, Mary and Margaret were both surviving; Elizabeth of York had also died in 1503 following the birth of Princess Catherine who did not survive. In the fantastical landscape dominating the top half, St George is shown mid-fight slaying the dragon - it is also symbolic of both Henry VII’s Welsh heritage with the Dragon, and St George as the patron saint of England. The story of St George and the Dragon tells of the Princess Cleodoline who is about to be sacrificed to the dragon when she is saved by the heroic warrior George. She is depicted in the top middle with a lamb which is emblematic of her sacrifice. The figure of Saint George also seems to be protecting the royal family below. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #henryvii #elizabethofyork #princearthur #arthurtudor #marytudor #margarettudor #stgeorge #georgeandthedragon #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london #tourist @royalcollectiontrust

The Royal Collection is one of the most important surviving collections of Holbein’s work; I believe it contains around 80 of his approximately 150 surviving works (most of which were on display here) and includes drawings, paintings, miniatures and book illustrations. Setting up the exhibition at the beginning, there was also a collection of paintings not by Holbein but from just prior to his time, for comparison with other artworks and artists at the time but also from artists who likely had an influence on his style . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #katherineofaragon #anneboleyn #janeseymour #anneofcleves #katherinehoward #katerynparr #katherineparr #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london #tourist @royalcollectiontrust

The Man, the Myth, the Legend - Hans Holbein the Younger himself as depicted in his own self portrait which was completed around 1542-43, not long before he died. Hans was born in Ausberg in around 1497 to a family of painters; his father, uncle and maternal grandfather were all painters, as himself, his brother and nephew would all go on to be. Presumably he was apprenticed in his family’s already successful workshop where he refined his skills as a young man before he travelled and settled in Basel, Switzerland. Regarding the portrait - the original painting was purchased by Cosimo III de’ Medici in 1681 and taken to Florence where it still remains in the Uffizi Gallery. (I took the photo here from the Holbein at the Tudor Court exhibition book by Kate Herd 😄 which I realise is cheating…) . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #selfportrait #holbeinfamily #holbeinatthetudorcourt #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #anneboleyn #janeseymour #anneofcleves #cosimodemedici #florence #uffizigallery #tourist @royalcollectiontrust #ausberg #basel

Back in 1509, the transition from Henry VII to Henry VIII was underway. But not everyone knew that yet. The death of Henry VII was kept secret for a couple of days while ministers prepared for the transition to Prince Henry, who was not quite 18 years old. Young Henry was officially proclaimed King Henry VIII on 23 March. Henry VII accomplished the seeming impossible: he had returned to England in 1485 after 14 years in exile, with a rag tag army of discontents and mercenaries and defeated extraordinary warrior Richard III and his royal army. Henry then held the throne in the face of rebellions and claims from Yorkists and pretenders. By the end of his reign, the Wars of the Roses was over and the Tudors were established on the throne. The Tudors: 2 fascinating kings named Henry, who together ruled for 62 years—more than 50 percent of the total dynasty. The numbers tell an essential part of the Tudor story! . . . . . #thetudorsbynumbers #tudorsbynumbers @penswordbooks #penandsword #penandswordbooks #henryvii #henryviii #henry2henry #tudorking #tudorcourt #tudordynasty #historyshowsuswhatspossible

From a few weekends ago - Holbein at the Tudor Court at the Queens Gallery. The Queens Gallery always does the best exhibitions! This was when the exhibition was nearing its end though so was pretty crowded (hence not too many pictures and funky camera angles). All in all it was a great time and I learned a lot! #kinghenryviii #tudorcourt #royalfamily #britishmonarchy #holbein #sixwivesofhenryviii #london #hamptoncourtpalace #queensgallery #royalcollection

If you tuned into yesterday’s live, where I spoke to @drowenemmerson about Hans Holbein’s portrait drawing of Anne Boleyn, you would have heard us discuss the fact that Holbein’s preparatory sketches vary greatly in terms of detail. Sometimes he concentrated on the sitter’s face, in other instances he invested a lot of time in capturing his client’s dress, and occasionally the preparatory study is very comprehensive and carefully records the sitter’s face, countenance and dress, like in the case of Lady Lister. We also discussed the fact that Holbein regularly altered and developed the sitter’s dress (and other features) in the finished portrait. Compare the preliminary study of Lady Audley (c.1538) to the final product, a watercolour miniature on vellum. This in an excellent example of Holbein’s process of refinement and development. Stephen Gardiner, I want to brush on this figure in history because he really an interesting character. I want to start by saying that every thing I have ever read that has had him in he has never been painted as a great person, and as such I have never warmed to him or paid him much attention. However we have to think of what this man actually lived through, he rose to be on the kings council for Henry 8th following his book he wrote which was anti papalancy and supported the kings supremacy in England, he was also instrumental in the fall of Thomas Cromwell. He was then put in the Tower of London during in the reign of Edward 6th and was then released when Mary 1st came to power. He then went on to lead against his other enemy Thomas Cranmer and eventually Cranmer was burnt on the stake at Smithfield. I don’t think Mary needed much of an excuse to execute the man that named her parents marriage invalid and name her a bastard but he indeed helped this come to pass. Through this I will say that he is resilient and persistent but a very mean and cruel man of his time. While I dislike what I have read of him I have to admire his tenacity and the fact he survived through the tudor court and being imprisoned in the tower not many did that even sir Thomas More #tudor #tudorcourt #stephengardiner #tudortimes

The Holbein at the Tudor Court Exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, closed last weekend. I was lucky enough to see it last November. It was such a joy and privilege to come face-to-face with so many of Holbein’s iconic works, including his dazzling portrait drawings, miniatures and paintings. The drawings were difficult to photograph, as they were behind glass. Nevertheless, here are some of my favourites. Anne Cresacre, Sir Nicholas Poyntz, Unidentified man (Ralph Sadler?), Mary or Mistress Zouch, Elizabeth, Lady Vaux, Thomas Wyatt, Lady Ratcliffe, Queen Anne Boleyn, Frances, Countess of Surrey, and an unidentified man.

This is Thomas Wyatt's (courtier of the Tudor court and diplomat dispatched to Europe) adaptation of a Petrarchan sonnet. It's widely thought to be a veiled account of a (possibly apocryphal) unsuccessful conquest of and/or unrequited love for Anne Boleyn, who in this hunting metaphor is Henry VIII's (Caesar's) deer. #poem #poetry #sonnet #petrarchansonnet #thomaswyatt #anneboleyn #henryviii #tudor #tudorcourt #courtier #courtlylove #caesar #hunting #deer #whosolisttohunt

Thrilled to see the Holbein exhibition at the Queen’s (officially King’s) Gallery. Absolutely loved being surrounded by these faces and stories. Magnificence and glory—the Tudors really benefitted from Holbein. Holbein created the way we see and remember Henry VIII and his court. If you want more, check out the amazing Franny Moyle on episode 175 of Royals, Rebels, and Romantics! Amazing to see the Anne Boleyn (is it??) drawing that I continue to read so much about. It’s haunting in some ways that we continue to debate about this woman. She still proves elusive. What do you think? Anne or not? . . . . . @royalcollectiontrust #holbeinatthetudorcourt #holbein #tudorcourt #henryviii #anneboleyn #anneboleynholbein #holbeinanneboleyn #holbeinhenryviii

Here's the sister portrait to the Phoenix portrait of Queen Elizabeth I - the Pelican portrait. Pelicans tend to favour warmer climates and to my knowledge are not commonly found in Britain, however Queen Elizabeth I adopted the pelican as a personal symbol. The history behind this stems from an early Christian text 'the Physiologus' in which it was written that a mother pelican can bring it's young back to life by wounding itself and giving them its own blood. This sentiment is echoed in God and Jesus' sacrifice on the crucifix for the sake of humankind. Though this is a mythical characteristic of the pelican, Queen Elizabeth resonated with the legend and saw herself as 'the mother of the Church of England' that she sacrificed parts of herself for the good of her country. This affinity is captured forever in this Pelican Portrait. Here the pelican sits centrally at her breast - it may be a purely fabricated object painted symbolically by the artist, however it may well be a real brooch as there are very similar pieces of this time fashioned in exquisite white enamelling. Elizabeth is richly decorated with her signature jewels and ropes of pearls - I can only imagine how heavy and uncomfortable these dresses must have been to wear! Still, there's a part of me wishing we still dressed like this these days..... 'Queen Elizabeth I: The Pelican Portrait' most likely attributed to Nicholas Hillier c. 1573 #arthistory #jewelleryhistory #jewelryhistory #tudor #tudorcourt #thetudors #tudorart #tudorjewellery #tudorjewels #elizabethan #queenelizabethI #elizabethanfashion #elizabethanjewels #gems #tudorgems #antique #lostjewels #lostgems #antiquegems #pearls #diamonds #gemstonestories #thepelicanportrait #nicholashilliard #tudorart #elizabethanart #pelican #pelicansymbology #thejewelstalker

HAMPTON COURT Here are some photos from my visit to Hampton Court in December. This was my first time visiting the illustrious palace and it exceeded all of my expectations. • The gardens in particular amazed me by how extensive they are and truly demonstrate how lavish the palace would’ve been in its prime in the 16th century as a bustling court. • As a Tudor fanatic the great hall was my favourite part of my trip. I made it my mission to see the interwoven Henry and Anne engraving hidden within the woodwork in the hall. Such a small engraving that holds so much historical significance. • Overall I couldn’t suggest a visit to Hampton Court more. I am desperate to visit again, as more than one trip is necessary to be able to take in the palace and it’s impressive history. #hamptoncourtpalace #hamptoncourt #hamptoncourtpalacegardens #16thcentury #sixteenthcentury #tudors #henryviii #tudorcourt #court #history #historybooks📚📝 #thehistorygirls #historylovers #historybuff #earlymodern #earlymodernhistory

If you like historical fiction set in the Tudor court I can highly recommend The Queen’s Favourite by @lauradowersauthor. Robert Dudley’s father attempts to put Lady Jane Grey on the throne in place of Mary Tudor, and the plan goes awry, ending with the family imprisoned in the Tower. Luckily, Robert is pardoned and plans to spend the rest of his days in the country. But when his childhood friend Elizabeth succeeds to the throne, Dudley seizes the opportunity to return to court. Soon, Robert and Elizabeth are closer than ever, and as they work together their friendship continues to grow. Elizabeth gives Robert the position of Master of the Horse and raises Robert’s rank to Earl of Leicester. It’s all fine and good, but one question remains. Will Elizabeth ever lift Robert high enough to accept him as her husband? Will Robert get to sit on the throne? When @lils.vintageworld included this one in her ‘My Favourite Books of 2023’ video on YouTube, I knew I had to read it. I’m so happy I did! I’m very much looking forward to continuing on with this series. You can find more of my thoughts on this one in my Goodreads review. (Link in bio.) Have you read this one? What did you think? If you have any recommendations for historical fiction set in this time period I would love to hear them! ❤️

AMAZING. Holbein drawings exhibition at Buckingham Palace. I have always loved, loved, loved Holbein’s paintings, and in particular the way he uses green in his work makes me swoon. The preparatory drawings were so assured, sometimes just a few expertly executed lines to capture a complete likeness, just beautiful. Also so interesting to compare the drawings with the finished paintings. How he subtly altered the features to make the sitters look more authoritarian - have more presence. An early version of filtering! I will post some more images and also some video I took of a recreation of his artistic practice, which is fascinating. If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet I recommend booking - it ends soon.

It is an exciting historical thriller set at the court of Elizabeth I. 1561 Queen Elizabeth is under pressure from all her advisors to marry, but no one can agree on a potential husband. Tension grows when one of the queen’s maids of honour, Mathilda, is killed and placed on a false altar of hawthorn branches. Her death follows the first lines of the prophecy, making people fearful about who could be next. Amid rising hysteria, the queen orders her trusted lady-in-waiting Catrin Surovell to investigate. Catrin soon learns that there is more to this mysterious death than anyone thought. Strange symbols and eerie events put her on the trail of the murderer. What do the symbols mean? Is someone using the guise of magic to destabilise the queen’s reign?
