#OTD in 1603, Elizabeth I’s funeral took place in London. After her death on 24th March 1603, the body of Queen Elizabeth I was placed inside a lead coffin and carried by night in a torchlit barge along the Thames from Richmond Palace to Whitehall. There, the Queen was to lie in state until her funeral, giving time for King James to travel down to London. While the coffin lay in state, a life size effigy of the Queen, dressed in her royal robes, was placed on top of it to act as a symbol of the monarchy while there was no monarch in England. 🌇Follow @josephstephen.history for more history content! #Tudors #RoyalHistory #FamousWomen #KingsandQueens #BritishHistory #AnneBoleyn #HistoryLovers #DailyHistory #History #MeghanMarkle #HistoricalFigures #EuropeanHistory #WomenInHistory #HistoriansofInstagram #HistoryBuff #HistoryBlog #HenryVIII #KateMiddleton #QueenElizabeth #HistoricalWomen #HenryVII #PrinceHarry #TheTudors #ElizabethI #WomenInHistory #TudorWomen #Cromwell #TudorHistory

On 28 April 1489 Henry Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland was lynched by a mob when attempting to collect tax. It was believed that the crowd’s real motive was vengeance for Northumberland’s refusal to deploy his troops at the Battle of Bosworth. Summoned by Richard III, he raised his feudal levy but watched the battle without intervening. His motives are unknown – his family were traditional Lancastrians, but he had served Edward IV faithfully. His personal relationship with Richard III fluctuated as Richard took many of the northern offices formerly held by the Percys. As a child, he had been a hostage together with Henry Tudor, under the control of William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke so bonds of friendship may have been created then between the two Henrys. Perhaps Northumberland was just sick of bloodshed and sought to protect his own men from slaughter. His tomb is in Beverly Minster. Bust of a boy c.1498 - Painted and gilded terracotta sculpture - by Guido Mazzoni This bust of an unknown youth was once thought to be a young Henry VIII; it was probably made for Henry VII. Italian terracotta sculpture was fashionable in early Tudor England and was used to decorate buildings such as Hampton Court Palace as well as for freestanding pieces like this. ”Your Grace, I’ve never met my cousin Richard.” ”Surely you would recognize your own kin, would you not?” ”Who better to expose this boy as a pretender than his own cousin?” — ”Well, I will not return to England. Not while Henry Tudor’s on the throne. But, if your aunt has her way we will all be restored by Richard.” ”You are convinced it is him, then?” ”And you are here to prove he is another imposter, of course?” #thewhiteprincess #thetudors #elizabethofyork #henryvii

Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch, left an indelible mark on English history. Ascending to the throne in 1485 after the Wars of the Roses, he ushered in an era of stability and prosperity. Through astute diplomacy and fiscal reform, Henry laid the groundwork for the powerful Tudor dynasty. His marriage to Elizabeth of York united the warring houses of Lancaster and York, symbolizing a new era of reconciliation and unity. 🏰🌹 Despite facing numerous challenges to his reign, including pretenders to the throne and financial difficulties, Henry VII’s reign was characterized by his shrewd governance and consolidation of power. His establishment of the Court of Star Chamber and the creation of a strong central administration paved the way for future Tudor monarchs to exert control over the realm. 💼🔍 Henry VII’s legacy extends beyond his political achievements. His patronage of the arts and promotion of Renaissance ideals contributed to the cultural flourishing of England during the Tudor period. Furthermore, his prudent foreign policy ensured peace with neighboring nations, allowing England to focus on internal development and expansion. 🎨🌍 As we reflect on the reign of Henry VII, we recognize his enduring impact on English history and the foundation he laid for the Tudor dynasty. His legacy continues to inspire scholars and enthusiasts alike, underscoring the importance of visionary leadership and strategic governance. 📜🤝 #HenryVII #TudorDynasty #EnglishMonarchy #WarsOfTheRoses #TudorHistory #MedievalEngland #RoyalLegacy #ElizabethOfYork #CourtOfStarChamber #RenaissanceEngland #HistoricalLeadership #MonarchicalPower #CulturalPatronage #DiplomaticVision #TudorArt #PoliticalReform #MonarchicalStability #FiscalPolicy #RoyalUnity #HistoricalLegacy #EnglishCulture #DynasticConsolidation #TudorMonarchs #RoyalPatriotism #MedievalPolitics #LeadershipVision #RoyalHeritage #HistoricalInfluence #HenryVIIReign

Lambert Simnel: Once Henry VII succeeded in taking the throne of England after the defeat of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth, pretenders from predominantly Yorkist sources came his way. One of 2 examples Perkin Warbeck and Lambert Simnel posed some threat to Henry’s early years. Lambert Simnel was born around 1477, his early years remain a total mystery and little to nothing is known about him. A small piece of evidence to show that he was of humble origins is shown in him becoming a student of Richard Simon an Oxford-trained priest. Richard believed he was a Kingmaker and taught Lambert every fine detail of King equities including handshakes. Richard describes the boy as being “handsome” a key detail of most kings. Simnel had a strong resemblance it is said to the children of Edward IV making him a perfect contender. However, because of recent rumours about the death of the Edward Earl of Warwick, it was clear that this was the preferred root. Simon began to spread rumours widespread that the Earl of Warwick had escaped and was loose. In England, he gained the support of some Yorkists. Next, he would take Simnel to Ireland, which greatly aided his position. Once greeted by the Earl of Kildare he was paraded through the streets and carried by Sir William Darcy (A statesman thought to be one of Ireland’s tallest men). Henry then ordered that the real Edward Earl of Warwick be paraded through London but widespread announcement of this was delayed. On the 24th of May 1487 Simnel was crowned Edward VI at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. Kildare gave Edward an army of Irish troops under the command of Thomas FitzGerald of Laccagh. John De La Pole backed successor of Richard III fled to Burgundy and offered his support to Simnel. Upon meeting Warwick’s aunt Margaret of York, he told her he had aided Warwick in escaping. He also met Francis Lovell after discussions Margaret collected an army of 2000 and shipped them to Ireland. Henry however knew and was informed to prepare an army which he did. Louis XII, King of France In 1514, the French court artist Jean Perréal travelled to England to paint a portrait of Mary Tudor, Henry VIII’s sister, as part of the preparations for her marriage to Louis XII. It is likely that he brought this portrait of Louis with him as a gift. Holbein visited France in 1524. While there he would have encountered the works of Perréal and his colleague Jean Clouet, the latter of whom he seems to have been inspired by . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #louisxii #henryvii #kingoffrance #marytudor #jeanclouet #clouet #jeanperreal #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london #tourist @royalcollectiontrust

#OTD in 1509, Edmund Dudley was arrested from his home in Candlewick Street, City of London, and taken to the Tower of London on charges of constructive treason. 17 year old Henry VIII had ascended the throne only 3 days previously, and there was no role for the unpopular financial agent of the recently deceased Henry VII in this new monarchy. His family were forced to flee their home at Candlewick Street, whilst Edmund himself was kept in the Tower; he underwent a trial at the City’s Guildhall in July 1509 which found him guilty of the charges. However, Edmund remained in the Tower of London, continuing to pled his innocence (and even trying to make arrangements/plans for escape) until his execution on 17 August 1510, 16 months following his initial arrest. 📷 K. 💩 Dem König beim Verrichten der Notdurft assistieren? Ein Traumjob – zumindest am englischen Königshof des 16. Jahrhunderts! © Getty Images / Heritage Images, FrankRamspott, duncan1890 #TerraXHistory #MrWissen2goGeschichte #Geschichte #GroomOfTheStool #Groom #HenryVII #HenryVIII

Before Holbein - I deliberately saved this one for St George’s Day! The Family of Henry VII with St George and the Dragon c. 1503-9 By an Unknown Flemish Artist Showing Henry VII and Elizabeth of York united by an angel. Their children are shown to either side, the sons on the left behind their father and the daughters on the right behind their mother. The King and Queen kneel at prayer desks on which Henry VII has a prayer book, orb and sceptre, and Elizabeth of York has a prayer book. The Lancastrian red rose and the portcullis of the Beaufort family are emblazoned on the tents. The red and white colours are those of both St George and Lancastrian livery. Of the princes, only Henry was alive at the time the painting was made as Prince Edmund died aged 1 and Prince Arthur had died in 1502. Of the princesses, Mary and Margaret were both surviving; Elizabeth of York had also died in 1503 following the birth of Princess Catherine who did not survive. In the fantastical landscape dominating the top half, St George is shown mid-fight slaying the dragon - it is also symbolic of both Henry VII’s Welsh heritage with the Dragon, and St George as the patron saint of England. The story of St George and the Dragon tells of the Princess Cleodoline who is about to be sacrificed to the dragon when she is saved by the heroic warrior George. She is depicted in the top middle with a lamb which is emblematic of her sacrifice. The figure of Saint George also seems to be protecting the royal family below. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #henryvii #elizabethofyork #princearthur #arthurtudor #marytudor #margarettudor #stgeorge #georgeandthedragon #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london #tourist @royalcollectiontrust

On this day, 23 April 1509, Henry VIII proclaimed King of England on St George’s Day while residing at the Tower of London. The death of Henry VII was kept a secret for two days while courtiers prepared for the accession of Henry VIII who was aged 17. During the first ten weeks of his reign, his grandmother, Lady Margaret Beaufort acted as regent until Henry VIII’s 18th birthday. 🕊🌼April 21 was also Elizabeth II's birthday. She would have turned 98 years old. That's why I decided to make such a parallel between her and Henry VII. I hope it turned out to be interesting. I generally find a lot in common in their characters. At first, both of them were not taken seriously, but they served the state and the monarchy with full responsibility until the end of their days, always putting duty as a priority. It is not known on what date Shakespeare was actually born but he was baptised at Stratford-upon-Avon on 26th April 1564, and baptism usually took place around three days after birth. #ElizabethOfYork was the real #WhitePrincess and her life was just as dramatic as what you’ve seen on TV. Born in 1466 she was the daughter of #EdwardIV and #ElizabethWoodville, the sister of the #PrincesInTheTower and the niece of #RichardIII. Her life was shaped by the #WarsOfTheRoses, the conflict fought between two branches of the Plantagenet family (the #Yorks and the #Lancasters) over who would hold the English throne. As a result of it she would see her father exiled, she and her mother and siblings would have to flee into sanctuary in #WestminsterAbbey not once but twice, she would be declared illegitimate, her little brothers ( #EdwardV and #RichardOfShrewsbury, Duke of York) would disappear at the hands of their uncle, #RichardDukeOfGloucester, and she would find herself married to the enemy; #HenryTudor, the man who defeated Richard at the #BattleOfBosworth and knocked the male members of the York family off the throne for good. All this took place before her 20th birthday and had times been different, she would have become Queen Regnant as Elizabeth I, rather than just the wife of #HenryVII. Back in 1509, the transition from Henry VII to Henry VIII was underway. But not everyone knew that yet. The death of Henry VII was kept secret for a couple of days while ministers prepared for the transition to Prince Henry, who was not quite 18 years old. Young Henry was officially proclaimed King Henry VIII on 23 March. Henry VII accomplished the seeming impossible: he had returned to England in 1485 after 14 years in exile, with a rag tag army of discontents and mercenaries and defeated extraordinary warrior Richard III and his royal army. Henry then held the throne in the face of rebellions and claims from Yorkists and pretenders. By the end of his reign, the Wars of the Roses was over and the Tudors were established on the throne. On 22 April 1509, Henry VIII's history-changing reign begun. This larger-than-life king is well known for his tumultuous relationships with women, and he is often defined by his many marriages. But what do we see if we take a different look? When we see Henry through the men in his life, a new perspective on this famous king emerges. In this fascinating and often surprising biography, our Joint Chief Curator @tracy.borman reveals Henry's personality in all its multi-faceted, contradictory glory. Henry's relationships with the men who surrounded him reveal much about his beliefs, behaviour, and character. They show him to be capable of fierce, but seldom abiding loyalty; of raising men only to destroy them later. He loved to be attended and entertained by boisterous young men who shared his passion for sport, but at other times, he was more diverted by men of intellect, culture, and wit. Often trusting and easily led by his male attendants and advisers during the early years of his reign, he matured into a profoundly suspicious and paranoid king whose favour could be suddenly withdrawn, as many of his later servants found to their cost. His cruelty and ruthlessness would become ever more apparent as his reign progressed, but the tenderness that he displayed towards those he trusted proves that he was never the one-dimensional monster that he is often portrayed as. #OTD #HenryVII #TracyBormanBooks #TracyBorman #Tudors #TheTudors #TudorHistory #TudorDynasty #HenryTudor #Cromwell #ThomasCromwel #CardinalWolsey #Wolsey #CharlesBrandon #Suffolk #HenryVII

PALACE OF PLACENTIA 1509. Before Henry VII died OTD he established a dynasty and built palace in the first royal park. Brick frontage and tower in 200 acres of hunting grounds. The deer are Tudor by lineal descent. Henry VIII was born here, and Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I. The king threw huge parties and banquets, including England’s first masquerade party: ‘The King this year kept the feast of Christmas at Greenwich, where was such an abundance of the viands served to all corners of any honest behaviour as hath been few times seen.’ Close by the King’s Yard Deptford where he built his first ships. He established the Royal Navy, encouraged shipbuilding and created modern dockyards. And the king’s first tilt yard, where he fell in tournament, lay unconscious for two hours, and woke never to joust again. The original buildings fell into disrepair, but the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Naval College stand on what is now a World Heritage Site.  Ambitious plans for a new palace were never completed, but the Queen’s House stands, built by Inigo Jones and commissioned by James I as the most expensive apology in the world for swearing at his queen, Anne of Denmark, in public. This is also England’s first neo-classical building. Standing between two towers by Sir John Vanbrugh and straddling the old main road, this is where Sir Walter Raleigh famously threw down his cloak for Queen Elizabeth. Later the site, by Royal Warrant, became a charitable institution for naval veterans, in accordance with the wishes of Queen Mary II. Henry VIII is best known for his six wives - and perhaps for being the Renaissance Prince who wrote ‘Greensleeves’  - but in a real sense the Navy and the World Heritage Site and the view described as ‘the English Versailles’ are also part of his legacy.

On the 21st of April 1509, King Henry VII died and his seventeen-year-old son became King Henry VIII. In the final years of his life, King Henry suffered from bouts of ill health that would often leave him bed-ridden. After the death of Prince Arthur and Queen Elizabeth, King Henry became paranoid of an uprising - both the Duke of Somerset and Earl of Suffolk were rumoured to take the throne after the King’s death, rather than his thirteen-year-old heir. In early 1509, King Henry retired to his bedchamber for one last time. Henry VII died on this date in 1509. Henry, the founder of the Tudor Dynasty, declared he was descended from King Arthur, who may not have existed. This may have been to add weight to his feeble claim to the English throne, which he usurped from Richard III, England's last great battle king. His queen had a greater claim than he, as she was Edward IV's daughter, Edward V's sister, & Richard III's niece. 🥀🏰 Exactly 515 years ago, on April 21, 1509, King Henry VII died. He was 52 years old, and he ruled 24 of them. 🥀 After the death of his wife Elizabeth of York in 1503, the king's health deteriorated sharply. He fell into a deep depression and withdrew from public life, even becoming physically ill, which alarmed his advisers. 🥀 When Henry VII finally reappeared at court, it was reported that he looked noticeably older. His long wavy brown hair was now white, he had lost a lot of weight, and his face was marked with lines of sadness. But the biggest difference was undoubtedly in his personality. 🥀 In February 1508, Henry was the victim of a new attack of tuberculosis. At the end of this month, he returned to Richmond Palace and remained in seclusion in his chambers. The servants noted that he could not eat and had difficulty breathing. 🥀 He recovered again, received ambassadors and participated in public events accompanied by his son, but it was clear that the king was not well. More and more, he withdrew from the public, hiding in finances. Nothing could revive the king's spirit: neither sports, nor minstrels, nor French sweets. 🥀 In early 1509, after a wet and cold winter, the king fell ill again. Tuberculosis again, breathing problems and constant nausea. He continued to struggle, but he already felt the approach of death. 🥀 On April 21, 1509, the king died. Those present called it an "exemplary death" for the standard of the era: he died peacefully in his bed, the king's gaze was fixed on the crucifix stretched out in front of him. 🥀 Lady Margaret was put in charge of ensuring Prince Henry's peaceful ascension to the throne, as well as funeral plans for the deceased The King is in Westminster Abbey, at his request, next to his dear wife Elizabeth. After the funeral, the heralds, removing the coats of arms of the late monarch, shouted: “The noble King Henry the Seventh is dead. Long live the noble King Henry the Eighth.” 🥀 Many years later, John Fischer recalled the late King Henry VII : “Ah, King Henry, King Henry, if thou were alive again, many one that is here present now would pretend a full great pity and tenderness upon thee!”

OTD: On this day in history, King Henry VII died at Richmond Palace, 1509. Henry VII is called the patriarch of the Tudor dynasty, Henry came to the throne in 1485, after defeating Richard III at the battle of Bosworth. In 1486, Henry united the warring houses of York and Lancaster by marrying Edward the fourths daughter, Elizabeth of York. Their union turned out to be a happy one, and by all appearances was a love match. They had four children survive past childhood, Arthur, Henry, Margaret and Mary. But we do believe Elizabeth was pregnant for a total of seven times. Henry is often perceived as miserly, and cold hearted. Whereas, Henry was an intelligent man, and prudent, he was careful with money but knew when it needed to be spent. Henry is more often remembered for his behaviour after his wife Elizabeth died in 1503, to which he does have a personality change. I had the privilege of seeing his magnificent tomb last month, and it was glorious. #henryvii #founderofdynasty #tudordynasty #thetudors #tudorhistory #otd #onthisdayinhistory

#OTD 21st April 1509 The 1st Tudor Monarch, Henry VII died at the Palace of Richmond from tuberculosis, he was buried in Westminster Abbey next to his wife Elizabeth of York. The loss of his son Arthur in 1502 had devastated him, then his beloved wife Elizabeth died in childbirth the following year. Henry’s reign had provided stability to the English monarchy following the turbulent times during The Wars of the Roses. A fiscally prudent King, he is credited with a number of administrative, economic and diplomatic initiatives from which the whole English economy benefited, raising new taxes to secure the government’s finances. His attention to detail and record keeping have given us a unique insight into this period in history. He was succeeded by his only surviving son, who would became one of our most iconic Monarchs Henry VIII. His mother Margaret Beaufort survived him, by two months. #HenryVII #ElizabethofYork #MargaretBeaufort #TheWarsoftheRoses #HenryVIII #LivingHistory #Theatre #TV #Film #Education #SchoolWorkshops #Entertainment #PublicSpeaking #CostumeDrama #History #TheTudors #Elizabethan #SpeakingoftheStuarts #Regency #Georgians #Victorians #Tudorials #LetsTalkTudors #TheTudorExperience #PTLH #Pasttimeslivinghistory #Thegotolivinghistorygroup Image: Portrait of King Henry VII by an unknown artist

#OTD 21 April 1509 Henry VII dies at Richmond Palace. The cause of his death was reportedly tuberculosis. Henry outlived his beloved wife, Elizabeth York, who died in 1503, and his eldest son and heir, Arthur, Prince of Wales, in 1502. Henry VII’s story is a remarkable one, from early beginnings in relative obscurity and exile, to successfully gaining, and keeping the throne, and founding the Tudor dynasty. Following in the footsteps of Henry VII takes us to a fascinating range of significant places - across England, Wales and Brittany. His early life is set to the backdrop of the Wars of the Roses which took him from turbulent beginnings in West Wales, to exile in Brittany with his paternal uncle, Jasper Tudor, and his victory in battle at Bosworth where he defeated Richard III and claimed the crown. Richmond, where Henry VII spent the end of his life, was a favoured palace of Henry VII and his granddaughter, Elizabeth I, who also died there. Today, almost nothing remains of the red-brick palace, built for the first Tudor king as a suitably impressive family seat for the dynasty he founded. His final resting place sits at the heart of the Tudor mausoleum, in the spectacular Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey, which was built to house the magnificent tomb he shared with Elizabeth of York. 🏵️ The Death of Henry VII 🏵️ 515 years ago today, the 21st of April 1509, the founder of the Tudor Dynasty died at the age of 52. Henry VII was the father of Henry VIII, grandfather of Elizabeth I, and through his daughter Margaret Tudor, he is the great great great (lot of greats) grandfather of the current King of England, Charles III. Henry VII ruled England from 1485 to 1509. He was born on January 28, 1457, in Pembroke Castle, Wales, to Margaret Beaufort and Edmund Tudor. Henry’s claim to the throne was based on his mother’s lineage, which traced back to King Edward III. His claim was supported by his decisive victory against Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth Field, which marked the end of the Wars of the Roses and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. During his reign, Henry VII faced several challenges, including pretenders to the throne, uprisings, and rebellions. He also had to deal with foreign threats from Scotland, France, and Spain. However, he managed to maintain stability and security in England, paving the way for his son Henry VIII to continue the Tudor legacy. #history #otd #henryvii #henryviii #tudors #england #historynerd #royalty #king #16thcentury

On this day in 1509… Henry VII passed away at the age of 52 at Richmond Palace. He was buried next to his wife, Elizabeth of York, who had passed away in 1503. Of course, Henry’s death meant the accession of his son, Henry VIII, who became one of England’s most infamous monarchs. Henry VIII was actually his father’s ‘spare’ as he had an older brother, Arthur. Sadly Arthur passed away in 1502, it does make one wonder how different Tudor history could’ve been had Arthur become King. 🖌️ King Henry VII, 1505, National Portrait Gallery #onthisday #otd #onthisdayinhistory #henryvii #henryviii #princearthur #elizabethofyork #nationalportraitgallery #history #historylover #historylovers #historybuff #historygirls #historybloggers #tudor #tudors #thetudors #tudorhistory #englishhistory #like #follow #historygeek

On this day 1509- Henry VII dies at the age of 52 at Richmond Palace. His death was attributed to tuberculosis. 1509- Henry VIII becomes king at the age of 17. 1536- Thomas Cromwell begins to plot Anne Boleyn’s downfall while feigning illness. Here I have pictured James Frain as Thomas Cromwell and Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors under their portraits. 1926- Queen Elizabeth II is born to Albert, Duke of York and Elizabeth Bowes Lyon in Mayfair, London. Her father would become George VI and she would succeed the throne after his death in 1952. Elizabeth went on to rule for 70 years, the longest reigning monarch England has ever had. #onthisday 21 April 1509 King Henry VII died at Richmond Palace. Henry VII died at Richmond Palace on 21 April 1509 of tuberculosis & was buried at Westminster Abbey, next to his wife, Elizabeth, in the chapel he commissioned. He was succeeded by his second son, Henry VIII (reign 1509–47). His mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort survived him, dying two months later on 29 June 1509. Henry VII (b.28 January 1457) was King of England & Lord of Ireland from his seizing the crown on 22 August 1485 until his death on 21 April 1509, as the first monarch of the House of Tudor. Henry won the throne when his forces defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the last king of England to win his throne on the field of battle. Henry cemented his claim by marrying Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV & niece of Richard III. Henry was successful in restoring the power & stability of the English monarchy after the political upheavals of the civil wars known as the Wars of the Roses. He founded the Tudor dynasty & , after a reign of nearly 24 years, was peacefully succeeded by his son, Henry VIII. Although Henry can be credited with the restoration of political stability in England, & a number of commendable administrative, economic & diplomatic initiatives, the latter part of his reign was characterised by a financial greed which stretched the bounds of legality. The capriciousness & lack of due process which indebted many in England, were soon ended upon Henry VII's death after a commission revealed widespread abuses. According to the contemporary historian Polydore Vergil, simple "greed" in large part underscored the means by which royal control was over-asserted in Henry's final years ▪ First Portrait: King Henry VII holding a Tudor Rose, wearing collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, dated 1505, by unknown artist, National Portrait Gallery, London

𖥸· — The Tudor dynasty might not have lasted that long, a mere 118 years in comparison to the 300 years that the Plantagenets ruled, but they did leave a significant lasting mark on history. From the tragic death of Prince Arthur leading to King Henry VIII and his six wives to Queen Elizabeth I vowing to never marry, the Tudors are known for their remarkable and scandalous decisions in life. And all of that wouldn’t have been possible with the Tudor dynasty’s founding monarch; King Henry VII of England or Henry Tudor as he is also known. A man who founded a dynasty that would be known throughout the ages, a man who changed England for the better who, sadly, history does not reflect on too kindly as he is much overshadowed by his son, six daughters-in-law and three grandchildren. Today marks the 515th anniversary of King Henry VII’s death, leading to the ascension of his only surviving son Henry VIII to the throne of England. And, to honour him, today Jade shall be taking us through the impact he made on British history and discuss the impact his death had for his subjects. April 21st - On this day in the year 1509 AD, King Henry VII, the first Tudor king of England, died in Richmond Palace. Henry Tudor was born on January 28th 1457 in Pembroke Castle in Wales. He was the son of Edmund Tudor and Margaret Beaufort, and was born three months after his father’s death. His mother was the great granddaughter of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford, but as their children had all been born out of wedlock, they were considered illegitimate. However, King Richard II legitimised them in 1397. When Henry IV overthrew Richard in 1399, he confirmed the legitimisation, but added the caveat that no Beaufort could succeed to the throne. This meant Henry’s claim to the English throne was pretty weak. Henry grew up during the tumultuous Wars of the Roses. Aged 4, he was taken to Raglan Castle as a ward of the Yorkist Sir William Herbert. He spent 8 of his formative years at the castle. In 1471, after Edward IV regained the throne from Henry VI, the teenage Henry Tudor fled abroad to Brittany, where he would spend the next 14 years living in exile. In 1485, Henry landed at Milford Haven, Wales at the head of an army, and on August 22nd, he faced off against King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in Leicestershire. During the battle, his stepfather, Lord Thomas Stanley, who was expected to support Richard, defected to Henry. This gave Henry’s army a huge advantage, and led to Richard being brutally killed on the battlefield. Henry then claimed the throne by right of conquest. Henry was crowned on October 30th 1485, and secured parliamentary recognition of his title in November. To strengthen his claim, and to unite the warring houses of Lancaster and York, he married Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, in January 1486. They would go on to have several children together, and it is widely believed they grew to genuinely love each other. Following his death, from what is believed to have been tuberculosis, Henry was buried in Westminster Abbey alongside his wife. Despite facing several plots and threats during his reign, he is largely considered to have been a successful king. #onthisdayinhistory #tudorhistory #henryvii

On 21 April 1509 Henry VII died at his favourite palace of Richmond. The king had been ailing for several years with throat and lung infections. During the first eighteen years of his reign, Henry had made great strides in turning a war-torn kingdom into a coherent whole. Although he had three times commanded an army – at Bosworth, Stoke, and in France - he was no seeker of military glory, preferring to concentrate on trade and the application of the law. In the period 1501-1503 his wife and her new-born baby, an eighteen-month old son, his fifteen-year-old heir all died and he lost his thirteen-year-old daughter to marriage in a foreign land. He never really recovered from these blows and spent the last six years of his reign in an increasing atmosphere of oppression. W 1471 roku po powrocie Edwarda IV Yorka do władzy i śmierci Henryka VI Henryk wraz z wujem Jasperem uciekli do Bretanii. Małgorzata rozpoczęła starania o zyskanie dla Henryka poparcia, a on sam uzyskał wsparcie Francji. Simnel został pokonany w 1487 roku pod Stoke Field, Warback zaś w 1497 roku, a dwa lata później stracono go wraz z hrabią Warwick, ostatnim z Yorków. Henryk VII odbudował gospodarkę Anglii, uzdrowił finanse państwa i prowadził aktywną politykę zagraniczną, zawierając sojusz małżeński z Hiszpanią i Szkocją, a także korzystny traktat z Francją. Nie ominęły go tragedie gdy 1502-1503 zmarli jego najstarszy syn Artur, a potem ukochana żona. Henryk zmarł 21 kwietnia 1509 roku, a tron objął po nim drugi syn Henryk VIII. On 20th April 1486 – Henry VII visited York, as part of his efforts to unite the country following his victory at Bosworth (more on the battle here http://bit.ly/22Eb2bF ) the previous autumn. He was met at the city boundary by the Sheriff and Aldermen. Pageants were laid on and the Mayor and leading citizens were dressed in shades of violet, mulberry and scarlet. At Micklegate Bar (pictured), red and white roses were displayed and a group of children sang out “King Henry, King Henry.” Perhaps to enhance Henry VII’s rather thin claim to the throne, six citizens dressed as the previous King Henrys appeared and were introduced. There was something quite profoundly different in the way the new King of the Romans, Henry VII was approaching his role compared to his two predecessors. Adolf von Nassau and Albrecht I had almost instantly sought to leverage their position into an increase in land and military resources, fully prepared for the inevitable confrontation with the princes and the electors. Henry VII takes a very different route. He looks to become a universally accepted ruler, a first amongst equals who brings peace through good judgements and reconciliation. The last time this had been attempted was by Frederick Barbarossa in the early years of his reign. And for that strategy to work, like Barbarossa, Henry must show his vassals that he acts solely in the interest of the realm and that he most certainly will not go and seize every vacant fief for himself or his family. Which leaves the question what Henry VII wanted to get out of his new title and powers, if not the expansion of his family’s lands inside the empire north of the Alps. Older historians have argued that Henry VII was a romantic, naïve man who intended to emulate Barbarossa not just in his policies in the German lands, but also in his overall strategy. He was, they believed, hankering after the riches of Lombardy and so again entangling the empire in the intractable Italian affairs. For what he was really like, check out episode 145 of the History of the Germans Podcast available wherever you get your podcasts from and here: https://historyofthegermans.com/2024/04/18/the-luxemburgs-gain-bohemia/ #bohemia #luxemburg #henryVII #holyromanempire #HotGod

On this day in 1492, the thoroughly modern and marvellous Marguerite of Navarre was born. A strong-minded free spirit with a sparkling intellect, she was Queen of the French Renaissance, a skilled diplomat and a reformer, urging toleration for emerging Huguenots and pushing for a reformation of the Catholic Church. Here are 6 things you might not know about her childhood... 🦜 Marguerite grew up in a blended family. Her father, the Count of Angoulême, liked the ladies, and even had a handful of illegitimate children. But Marguerite's mother was super chill about the whole thing; she not only became best friends with his mistresses, but allowed them to live in the family château. The children were all raised and educated together. 🦜 Marguerite's mama, Louise of Savoy, was every bit as brilliant as her daughter. When Louise's own mother died, she was taken in by "Madame La Grande", Anne de Beaujeu, who skillfully acted regent for her little brother, Charles VIII. She received a sparkling education (alongside a young Diane de Poitiers and Margaret of Austria, btw) and learned first-hand the governance of France - which came in pretty handy when she had to act as regent for her son, King Francis I. 🦜 Speaking of Francis, Marguerite ADORED her brother - and he adored her back. When he was captured during the Battle of Pavia, Marguerite rode like the clappers to Madrid to negotiate his release. He called her "a pearl among pearls." 🦜 When Henry VII showed an interest in marrying her in 1505, Marguerite shut that thing the HELL down - even though the match was practically a done deal. 🦜 She was also briefly considered as a match for Henry VIII before he married Katherine of Aragon... Fascinating to imagine how the next century of history would have played out if that wedding had happened! 🦜 As a teen, Marguerite fell in love with a dashing young knight named Gaston de Foix, who was nicknamed "The Thunderbolt of Italy". Meow. According to one contemporary source, they asked for permission to marry but were shut down by King Louis. Not that it mattered, Gaston went off to fight in Italy and died. Wah.

The iconic image of the statue of Henry VII with his birthplace, Pembroke Castle, as a backdrop, is a familiar one in Tudor circles. Unveiled on 10 June 2017 by Sara Edwards, Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, the statue has become an important focal point for the town. In Issue 11, Tony Riches explains the story of the statue’s creation.
