”Your Grace, I’ve never met my cousin Richard.” ”Surely you would recognize your own kin, would you not?” ”Who better to expose this boy as a pretender than his own cousin?” — ”Well, I will not return to England. Not while Henry Tudor’s on the throne. But, if your aunt has her way we will all be restored by Richard.” ”You are convinced it is him, then?” ”And you are here to prove he is another imposter, of course?” #thewhiteprincess #thetudors #elizabethofyork #henryvii

Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch, left an indelible mark on English history. Ascending to the throne in 1485 after the Wars of the Roses, he ushered in an era of stability and prosperity. Through astute diplomacy and fiscal reform, Henry laid the groundwork for the powerful Tudor dynasty. His marriage to Elizabeth of York united the warring houses of Lancaster and York, symbolizing a new era of reconciliation and unity. 🏰🌹 Despite facing numerous challenges to his reign, including pretenders to the throne and financial difficulties, Henry VII’s reign was characterized by his shrewd governance and consolidation of power. Before Holbein - I deliberately saved this one for St George’s Day! The Family of Henry VII with St George and the Dragon c. 1503-9 By an Unknown Flemish Artist Showing Henry VII and Elizabeth of York united by an angel. Their children are shown to either side, the sons on the left behind their father and the daughters on the right behind their mother. The King and Queen kneel at prayer desks on which Henry VII has a prayer book, orb and sceptre, and Elizabeth of York has a prayer book. The Lancastrian red rose and the portcullis of the Beaufort family are emblazoned on the tents. The red and white colours are those of both St George and Lancastrian livery. Of the princes, only Henry was alive at the time the painting was made as Prince Edmund died aged 1 and Prince Arthur had died in 1502. Of the princesses, Mary and Margaret were both surviving; Elizabeth of York had also died in 1503 following the birth of Princess Catherine who did not survive. In the fantastical landscape dominating the top half, St George is shown mid-fight slaying the dragon - it is also symbolic of both Henry VII’s Welsh heritage with the Dragon, and St George as the patron saint of England. The story of St George and the Dragon tells of the Princess Cleodoline who is about to be sacrificed to the dragon when she is saved by the heroic warrior George. She is depicted in the top middle with a lamb which is emblematic of her sacrifice. The figure of Saint George also seems to be protecting the royal family below. . . #history #britishhistory #britishhistoryexplorer #travel #photography #ameteurphotography #historyismypassion #historytour #historical #holbein #hansholbein #hansholbeintheyounger #tudors #tudorhistory #tudorpainting #tudorcourt #henryviii #henryvii #elizabethofyork #princearthur #arthurtudor #marytudor #margarettudor #stgeorge #georgeandthedragon #queensgallery #buckinghampalace #london #tourist @royalcollectiontrust

#ElizabethOfYork was the real #WhitePrincess and her life was just as dramatic as what you’ve seen on TV. Born in 1466 she was the daughter of #EdwardIV and #ElizabethWoodville, the sister of the #PrincesInTheTower and the niece of #RichardIII. Her life was shaped by the #WarsOfTheRoses, the conflict fought between two branches of the Plantagenet family (the #Yorks and the #Lancasters) over who would hold the English throne. As a result of it she would see her father exiled, she and her mother and siblings would have to flee into sanctuary in #WestminsterAbbey not once but twice, she would be declared illegitimate, her little brothers ( #EdwardV and #RichardOfShrewsbury, Duke of York) would disappear at the hands of their uncle, #RichardDukeOfGloucester, and she would find herself married to the enemy; #HenryTudor, the man who defeated Richard at the #BattleOfBosworth and knocked the male members of the York family off the throne for good. All this took place before her 20th birthday and had times been different, she would have become Queen Regnant as Elizabeth I, rather than just the wife of #HenryVII. To learn all about Elizabeth’s youth and how she went from being #TheWhitePrincess to the first #TudorQueen, see my latest YouTube video, available by clicking the link in my bio and selecting my channel, or by copying and pasting https://youtu.be/VMswZDKmxhE into your browser. #HistoryCalling #RoyalHistory #RoyalWomen #Education #History

On the 21st of April 1509, King Henry VII died and his seventeen-year-old son became King Henry VIII. In the final years of his life, King Henry suffered from bouts of ill health that would often leave him bed-ridden. After the death of Prince Arthur and Queen Elizabeth, King Henry became paranoid of an uprising - both the Duke of Somerset and Earl of Suffolk were rumoured to take the throne after the King’s death, rather than his thirteen-year-old heir. In early 1509, King Henry retired to his bedchamber for one last time. The fifty-two-year-old miser left England at peace with France, Scotland and Spain, and a very rich exchequer for his son, now King Henry VIII. . . . #henryvii #henryviii #princearthur #elizabethofyork #tudors #tudorrose #england #earlymodern #kingsandqueens #royals #monarchy #englishmonarchy #britishmonarchy #history #englishhistory #britishhistory

🥀🏰 Exactly 515 years ago, on April 21, 1509, King Henry VII died. He was 52 years old, and he ruled 24 of them. 🥀 After the death of his wife Elizabeth of York in 1503, the king's health deteriorated sharply. He fell into a deep depression and withdrew from public life, even becoming physically ill, which alarmed his advisers. 🥀 When Henry VII finally reappeared at court, it was reported that he looked noticeably older. His long wavy brown hair was now white, he had lost a lot of weight, and his face was marked with lines of sadness. But the biggest difference was undoubtedly in his personality. 🥀 In February 1508, Henry was the victim of a new attack of tuberculosis. At the end of this month, he returned to Richmond Palace and remained in seclusion in his chambers. The servants noted that he could not eat and had difficulty breathing. 🥀 He recovered again, received ambassadors and participated in public events accompanied by his son, but it was clear that the king was not well. More and more, he withdrew from the public, hiding in finances. Nothing could revive the king's spirit: neither sports, nor minstrels, nor French sweets. 🥀 In early 1509, after a wet and cold winter, the king fell ill again. Tuberculosis again, breathing problems and constant nausea. He continued to struggle, but he already felt the approach of death. 🥀 On April 21, 1509, the king died. Those present called it an "exemplary death" for the standard of the era: he died peacefully in his bed, the king's gaze was fixed on the crucifix stretched out in front of him. 🥀 Lady Margaret was put in charge of ensuring Prince Henry's peaceful ascension to the throne, as well as funeral plans for the deceased The King is in Westminster Abbey, at his request, next to his dear wife Elizabeth. After the funeral, the heralds, removing the coats of arms of the late monarch, shouted: “The noble King Henry the Seventh is dead. Long live the noble King Henry the Eighth.” 🥀 Many years later, John Fischer recalled the late King Henry VII : “Ah, King Henry, King Henry, if thou were alive again, many one that is here present now would pretend a full great pity and tenderness upon thee!”

Why royals didn’t breastfeed their children in medieval times? 👑Royal mothers didn’t usually breastfeed their children Breastfeeding was generally viewed with distaste, but on a practical level, it acted as a form of contraception ; for a queen, whose job it was to provide more heirs, breastfeeding simply wasn’t a practical option if she wished to conceive again quickly. 👑Unlike the royals , poor families could not afford the services of a wet nurse and breastfed their infants themselves. 👑Royal women were not expected to breastfeed their own babies, as this was not in accordance with their high status. In this, the matriarchal Queen in her role of fertile mother – a powerful tool of imagery in royal propaganda portraits, ensuring the longevity of the dynasty – does not extend to the performance of its attendant physical functions, nor was it expected to. A Queen’s body was used for reasons of state in the process of childbirth, whilst the natural process of motherhood – feeding – was given over to others beneath her own exalted status. In practice, this made the Queen a figure of state, superior to her own natural bodily processes. All this would have been understood as an established ritual and have been viewed as entirely normal. Historically at least, the body of a queen was governed by ceremony, both in life and later, in death. #history #motherandbaby #babies #breastfeed #anneboleyn #elizabethofyork #elizabethwoodville #lucreziaborgia #borgias #royal #birth #pregnancy #catherineofaragon #elizabethi #marytudor

#OTD 21st April 1509 The 1st Tudor Monarch, Henry VII died at the Palace of Richmond from tuberculosis, he was buried in Westminster Abbey next to his wife Elizabeth of York. The loss of his son Arthur in 1502 had devastated him, then his beloved wife Elizabeth died in childbirth the following year. Henry’s reign had provided stability to the English monarchy following the turbulent times during The Wars of the Roses. A fiscally prudent King, he is credited with a number of administrative, economic and diplomatic initiatives from which the whole English economy benefited, raising new taxes to secure the government’s finances. His attention to detail and record keeping have given us a unique insight into this period in history. He was succeeded by his only surviving son, who would became one of our most iconic Monarchs Henry VIII. His mother Margaret Beaufort survived him, by two months. #HenryVII #ElizabethofYork #MargaretBeaufort #TheWarsoftheRoses #HenryVIII #LivingHistory #Theatre #TV #Film #Education #SchoolWorkshops #Entertainment #PublicSpeaking #CostumeDrama #History #TheTudors #Elizabethan #SpeakingoftheStuarts #Regency #Georgians #Victorians #Tudorials #LetsTalkTudors #TheTudorExperience #PTLH #Pasttimeslivinghistory #Thegotolivinghistorygroup Image: Portrait of King Henry VII by an unknown artist

#OTD 21 April 1509 Henry VII dies at Richmond Palace. The cause of his death was reportedly tuberculosis. Henry outlived his beloved wife, Elizabeth York, who died in 1503, and his eldest son and heir, Arthur, Prince of Wales, in 1502. Henry VII’s story is a remarkable one, from early beginnings in relative obscurity and exile, to successfully gaining, and keeping the throne, and founding the Tudor dynasty. Following in the footsteps of Henry VII takes us to a fascinating range of significant places - across England, Wales and Brittany. His early life is set to the backdrop of the Wars of the Roses which took him from turbulent beginnings in West Wales, to exile in Brittany with his paternal uncle, Jasper Tudor, and his victory in battle at Bosworth where he defeated Richard III and claimed the crown. Richmond, where Henry VII spent the end of his life, was a favoured palace of Henry VII and his granddaughter, Elizabeth I, who also died there. Today, almost nothing remains of the red-brick palace, built for the first Tudor king as a suitably impressive family seat for the dynasty he founded. His final resting place sits at the heart of the Tudor mausoleum, in the spectacular Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey, which was built to house the magnificent tomb he shared with Elizabeth of York. On this day in 1509… Henry VII passed away at the age of 52 at Richmond Palace. He was buried next to his wife, Elizabeth of York, who had passed away in 1503. Of course, Henry’s death meant the accession of his son, Henry VIII, who became one of England’s most infamous monarchs. Henry VIII was actually his father’s ‘spare’ as he had an older brother, Arthur. Sadly Arthur passed away in 1502, it does make one wonder how different Tudor history could’ve been had Arthur become King. 🖌️ King Henry VII, 1505, National Portrait Gallery #onthisday #otd #onthisdayinhistory #henryvii #henryviii #princearthur #elizabethofyork #nationalportraitgallery #history #historylover #historylovers #historybuff #historygirls #historybloggers #tudor #tudors #thetudors #tudorhistory #englishhistory #like #follow #historygeek

𖥸· — The Tudor dynasty might not have lasted that long, a mere 118 years in comparison to the 300 years that the Plantagenets ruled, but they did leave a significant lasting mark on history. From the tragic death of Prince Arthur leading to King Henry VIII and his six wives to Queen Elizabeth I vowing to never marry, the Tudors are known for their remarkable and scandalous decisions in life. And all of that wouldn’t have been possible with the Tudor dynasty’s founding monarch; King Henry VII of England or Henry Tudor as he is also known. A man who founded a dynasty that would be known throughout the ages, a man who changed England for the better who, sadly, history does not reflect on too kindly as he is much overshadowed by his son, six daughters-in-law and three grandchildren. Today marks the 515th anniversary of King Henry VII’s death, leading to the ascension of his only surviving son Henry VIII to the throne of England. And, to honour him, today Jade shall be taking us through the impact he made on British history and discuss the impact his death had for his subjects. 📚Book review📚 Sisters of Richard III: The Plantagenet Daughters of York by Sarah J. Hodder • Women in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance tend to get short shrift in historical sources. The sisters of English Kings Edward IV and Richard III are perfect examples of this. We know a decent amount about the youngest sister, Margaret of York, because she married one of Europe’s wealthiest and most powerful princes, Charles, Duke of Burgundy. But her sisters, Anne and Elizabeth of York, are much less well known. • As members of the House of York, the sisters were all involved in the Wars of the Roses. Margaret was still unmarried when her brother Edward became king, and she became a marital prize. Her marriage to the Duke of Burgundy doesn’t appear to have been happy, but it gave her the influence and power to be able to help her family when the war drove them from the throne. • Anne was married at age 6 to another child, who turned out to be an enemy of her family. Elizabeth seems to have had a happier marriage, but her family was deeply affected by the ongoing wars. • If you’re not familiar with the Wars of the Roses, the author provides an excellent first chapter that gives an excellent introduction to the later Plantagenet kings and the wars between the houses of Lancaster and York. This is a complex story, and Sarah Hodder does a great job of setting the scene for the sisters’ stories. This book is a fascinating look at some lesser known people from English royal history. • I received an ARC from the publisher Pen and Sword Books and NetGalley. • • #bookish #booklover #instabooks #booksofinstagram #booknerd #bookworm #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #igreads #igbooks #bookaholic #bookobsessed #richardiii #plantagenets #margaretofyork #elizabethofyork #anneofyork

Haddon Hall, Derbyshire (April 2024) I’ve said it before.. I love an old kitchen! We were fortunate to have a guide do a talk on the kitchens at Haddon Hall and I just find it fascinating how these kids of rooms functioned way back when. This particular kitchen had a stream that flowed fresh water down a pipe and into troughs in the corner of the kitchen - one of which they housed live fish in to keep them fresh until Friday came around! #haddonhall #historichouses #historicbuildings #historicbuilding #tudorhouse #tudorrose #henryvii #elizabethofyork #derbyshire

Welcome back to Famous Tudors! Elizabeth of York was born on the 11th February 1466, and was the daughter and eldest child of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville. Her father had managed to capture and imprison Henry VI in 1461, dethroning him and taking the crown for himself, starting the royal House of York. In 1464, he secretly married Elizabeth Woodville, a young widow. It was a love match, not a diplomatic one, was controversial and caused trouble when Elizabeth alienated powerful Yorkist supporters, causing them to side with Lancastrians and challenge Edward. The result was that Edward was driven into exile and the throne became Henry VI’s once more in October 1470. 🌇Follow @josephstephen.history for more history content! #Tudors #RoyalHistory #FamousWomen #KingsandQueens #BritishHistory #AnneBoleyn #HistoryLovers #DailyHistory #History #MeghanMarkle #HistoricalFigures #EuropeanHistory #WomenInHistory #HistoriansofInstagram #HistoryBuff #HistoryBlog #HenryVIII #Religion #KateMiddleton #QueenElizabeth #HistoricalWomen #HenryVIII #PrinceHarry #TheTudors #ElizabethI #WomenInHistory #TudorWomen #ArthurTudor #ElizabethofYork

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — This is WAR. I finally got to see the behind-the-scenes of before Edward IV met Elizabeth Woodville on that fateful day in The White Queen. The magic throughout the first several books are explained, and we even dip into a bit of the witch trials. Yes, I am a bit backwards, I didn’t know about this book until I was already almost halfway through the Tudor and Plantagenet series. By then, I figured it would be a sweet ending to read the prequel last. And I don’t regret it one bit. It was so nice to see (read?) Jacquetta again and see how she fell in love with Richard Woodville. This book had me researching like crazy. I HAD to know about this rumor that Margaret of Anjou’s son wasn’t Henry VI’s, about his mental illness, about ALL of Jacquetta’s children, about Duchess Ciciley.. It just makes me all the more sad to say goodbye to this series. I just want to read it all over again. Perhaps I’ll have to settle with watching the TV series instead. #jacquettaofluxembourg #richardwoodville #elizabethwoodville #elizabethofyork #margaretofanjou #henryvi #edwardiv #margaretbeaufort #edwardtudor #whiteprincess #whitequeen #tudorandplantagenet #booktotv #basedonthebook #historicalfiction #historicalfantasy #1400shistory #tudorhistory #plantagenethistory #book #books #booksbooksbooks #audible #audiobooks #kindle #kindlebooks

Lucrezia & Elizabeth 🌸 Dear Fati, I wish you a very happy birthday! 🩷 I'm so happy to have you in my life as such a lovely friend. I hope you had an amazing day, and you could spent it with the ones who are closests to you heart! <3 I thought about editing the parallel between Lucrezia Borgia and Elizabeth of York. They were both born as daughters of men in power, they both had their 'innocence' in the period dramas, they were both forced to marry, they were both romoured to be in close relationship with their relatives (history/period drama), they both held power, loved their children, and died by giving birth to them. And on the top of it all, they were alive at the same time. Wearing Green in the Middle Ages : 🟩In the Middle Ages the color green symbolized rebirth, life, everlasting life, nature, and spring. I think it is fair to say that these attributions hold true to this day.. 🟩During the Middle Ages, green became more than just a symbol of positivity. It was associated with luck and love. Marriageable young women wore green. It was also the color of choice for pregnant women—a nod to the hopeful fertility of spring. 🟩No wonder, then, that medieval youth frequently wore green. On the equinox (March 21), they would take it one step further with young men covering themselves entirely in plant life to appear as the “leafy man” or “moss man,” and would then run around creating chaos to proclaim the end of winter. 🟩If this sounds pagan, you’d be right.😉 🟩 Do you like wearing green ? #green #medievaltime #england #starz #netflix #anneboleyn #becomingelizabeth #theotherboleyngirl #natalieportman #catherineofaragon #elizabethofyork #thespanishprincess #charlottehope #history #royalfamily #windsor #thetudors #tudor #tudordynasty

"Humble and reverent" Elizabeth of York, upon taking the throne in 1486 she chose this phrase to reflect her deep christian faith. She was the first Queen consort of the Tudor dynasty 🏵 Elizabeth of York symbolized the epitome of the perfect Medieval Queen. She was beautiful, charitable, and beloved by the people. By marrying Henry Tudor, who had taken the throne of England by conquest, the Houses of Lancaster and York were united and the War of the Roses came to an end. And Elizabeth was the mother of an heir who would become King Henry VIII of England and two of her daughters would become queens. 👑 I'm currently reading Elizabeth of York, the first Tudor Queen by Alison Weir. #onthisday - 4th April - in 1497, Elizabeth Tilney, Countess of Surrey, died. Elizabeth was the grandmother to two of England’s Queen Consorts - Queens Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard - and the great-grandmother of one of the most famous Monarchs in history - Queen Elizabeth I of England. Elizabeth lived during the turbulent period known as the ‘Wars of the Roses’ and both her first and second husbands supported the Yorkists. Her first husband was killed at the Battle of Barnet in 1471. During this time the Yorkist King Edward IV was briefly deposed and Elizabeth accompanied his Queen, Elizabeth Woodville to sanctuary in Westminster Abbey with her daughters (one of which was Elizabeth of York, mother of King Henry VIII who would marry two of Elizabeth’s granddaughters). Elizabeth’s second husband was Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. Elizabeth and Thomas had at least eleven children. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth married the up and coming courtier Thomas Boleyn. Their youngest daughter Anne Boleyn would rise higher than anyone in the family could have ever dreamed when she was crowned and anointed Queen of England at Westminster Abbey on 1st June 1533 after marrying King Henry VIII. Through their son Edmund, Elizabeth and Thomas Howard’s are the grandparents of Queen Catherine Howard who also married Henry VIII. Elizabeth died before either of her famous granddaughters were born, so she did not witness their incredible rise and bloody downfalls. She could never have foreseen that one of her great-grandchildren would sit on the throne of England as a ruling Monarch in their own right as one of the most famous Monarchs in history - Queen Elizabeth I. At the time of her death the Howard’s were still working their way back into favour. Her father-in-law John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 fighting for King Richard III against Henry VII. Her husband was briefly imprisoned in the Tower. Elizabeth served Queen Elizabeth of York, no doubt helping to restore the family to favour. Through her granddaughter Mary Boleyn (older sister of Queen Anne Boleyn) she is an ancestress of the British Royal Family. Swipe 👉 for line.

~ Margaret Beaufort (1443-1509) ~ The Tudor matriarch instrumental in orchestrating the rise to power of the Tudor dynasty, mother of King Henry V11. It is not only her devoutness and never failing piety that inspires me, but also her steadfast devotion to her son. That never ending, parental love has always appealed to me personally, inspired me almost, to not only dream of the affection to which I would treat my future children with, but also to perhaps lament that love that I have been deprived of since I was a little girl. Margaret Beaufort symbolises all that I wish that I could be, staring down into the abyss into which you unfairly and cruelly find yourself in, and yet still being able to drag and to pull yourself out, not just for yourself, but for your love of the higher power, for your family, your ancestors and your dependents. Margaret Beaufort spits in the eye of the ‘can not’, and pervasively treads along the treacherous path of her life, her feet bleeding as she walks, not quite a martyr, but close enough. In some ways, it is reminiscent of Christ pulling the cross up Golgotha. With that same selflessness that led Christ to sacrifice himself for humanity, Margaret consistently sacrifices the easy life that she could have had, consistently putting her life on the line (the punishment for treason for women in medieval times was burning), for a son (she believed was divinely ordained) not even 13 years her junior. “Souvent me souviens” (“I remember often”) ~ #margaretbeaufort #beaufort #tudor #henryvii #henrytudor #edmundtudor #jaspertudor #henrystafford #thomasstanley #history #medieval #warsoftheroses #cousinswar #middleages #richardiii #battleofbosworth #battleofbosworthfield #elizabethwoodville #elizabethofyork #york #lancaster #plantagenet #religion #catholicfaith #tudordynasty #tudorhistory #kinghenryvii #kinghenryviii

On this day… Arthur, Prince of Wales, died just aged 15 in 1502. In the March of 1502, Arthur and his wife Katherine of Aragon had become ill, and while Katherine recovered, Arthur sadly didn’t. Arthur’s short marriage to Katherine would eventually turn England upside down, with his younger brother, Henry VIII, using their marriage to aid him in his annulment from Katherine of Aragon so he could marry Anne Boleyn. I often wonder how different the Tudor period would have been had Arthur survived. Would we still have what we consider a Golden Age? Would Protestantism still have found its way to England? 🖌️ Arthur, Prince of Wales, c.1500 #onthisday #otd #onthisdayinhistory #princearthur #arthur #princeofwales #henryvii #henryviii #elizabethofyork #catherineofaragon #katherineofaragon #history #historylover #historylovers #historybuff #tudor #tudors #thetudors #protestantism #elizabethi

April 2nd, 1502: Prince Arthur Tudor died at fifteen years old. He was the son of King Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth of York. Five months prior to his death, Prince Arthur married the young Infanta, Catherine of Aragon. The two teenagers soon set off to Ludlow Castle in Wales so Arthur could preside over his seat. All seemed well for the Prince and Princess of Wales. Arthur was doing his duties as the Prince of Wales and Catherine was slowly settling into her new life. But this was not to last. In late March both Catherine and Arthur fell ill. What they had is unknown, but many theories have been put forward, including sweating sickness and tuberculosis. As the days went on, both teens struggled with their illness and as Catherine recovered in her bed, Arthur died. There is no record of how Catherine reacted to the death of her husband, but I think it is safe to assume she was sad and frightened. Arthur represented her future, her safety and now he was gone. On April 4th the news reached the king. Upon hearing of his beloved son’s death, King Henry burst into tears. He had his wife brought to his rooms and she proceeded to remind him that “God hath ever preserved him” and that they still had, “yet a fair Prince and two fair princesses“. When Elizabeth returned to her chambers she too began to break down and the king was brought to her, so that they could grieve together. On April 8th, a procession took place in order for the salvation of Arthur’s soul. The same night St. Paul’s cathedral sang a dirge in his honor. Arthur’s funeral took place on April 25th. His body was brought to Worcester Cathedral in a, “special wagon upholstered in black and drawn by six horses, also caparisoned in black.” The Earl of Surrey was his chief mourner. At the end of the funeral, the ushers in Arthur’s house broke their staves and threw it into his open grave. Catherine was not at the funeral as it was not customary for a widow to attend her husband’s funeral. Currently, Arthur’s tomb is surrounded by heraldic carvings of the houses of Tudor, York, Lancaster, Beaufort and even Catherine of Aragon’s pomegranate.

Arthur, Prince of Wales (1486–1502), was the eldest son of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York, making him the heir apparent to the English throne. His marriage to Catherine of Aragon in 1501 was part of a strategic alliance between England and Spain. However, Arthur died unexpectedly at Ludlow Castle in 1502 at the age of 15, leading to his brother Henry (later Henry VIII) becoming the heir and eventually king. Arthur's early death significantly affected English history, particularly religious and marital politics. #historyroadshow #arthurtudor #thetudors #princeofwales #catherineofaragon #henryvii #elizabethofyork #onthisday

👑Why royals wear black in mourning?♣️⚫️⬛️ ⬛️ Mourning attire has evolved thgroughout the centruies but one thing that has remained constant, at least in western civilizations , is the awearing colour black . ⬛️ Orginally reserved for royalty and aristocracy who were experiencing grief , black mourning dresses became a fashion statment worn by people of classes who wished to emulate the ways and dress of the elite. ⬛️The custom of wearing unadorned black clothing for mourning dates back at least to Roman Empire , when toga “pulla” made of dark colored wool , was worn during mourning; however, black wasn’t always the colour of mourning in the west. For centuries white ◻️ was worn in mourning by most. This is beacuse of white was most affordable fabric colour and one most people already had. Even after black became popular mourning colour, children still wore white to funuerals as a sign of innocence and purity. #black #mourning #royals #royalfamily #windsor #katemiddleton #plantagenet #york #elizabetwoodville #edwardiv #elizabethofyork #henryvii #anneboleyn #catherineofaragon #thespanishprincess #thewhiteprincess #starz

Tudor Tombs Although Henry VIII is buried in Windsor, there are many other Tudors in Westminster Abbey. Henry’s father, Henry VII, built the Lady Chapel as the resting place for himself and his family. His monument shows him lying alongside his wife, Elizabeth of York. His mother Margaret Beaufort is here, as are his grandchildren Elizabeth I and Mary I, though there is no grand monument for Mary. Henry VII’s great granddaughter Mary Queen of Scots is also here. Also nearby is another of Henry VII’s granddaughters Frances Grey, Duchess of Suffolk. Mother of Lady Jane Grey, she was the daughter of Henry VIII’s sister Princess Mary (briefly Queen of France) and Charles Brandon (one of Henry VIII’s best friends). It’s a rather grand monument, though away from the Lady Chapel, so I was intrigued who it was. Elsewhere near the high alter is Anne of Cleves marked with a simple tombstone. Pictures: 1. An extract from Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon’s diary dated Tuesday 16 January 1923: ‘Woke at 8.30. The papers announce my engagement this morning. Great headlines & lots of rot! Up by 11. Telegrams poured in all day, letters & reporters tumbling over each other. Saw Aunt Maudie. Bertie came to lunch. There were hundreds of photographers & a crowd when we came out. Awful! Went to Buckingham Palace & chose the ring. The Prince of Wales came in for some time, & sent for some rings from Boucheron! Had tea with Bertie - then he brought me home. More telegrams, & saw two Scotch reporters & [Victor] Gordon-Lennox. Quite exhausted! Bertie dined - Father came up. Talked till 12 - 8 were photographed - not a success! Once a York, always a York? Catherine’s fortunes changed following the death of her uncle, King Richard III, and the marriage of her sister, Elizabeth of York, to King Henry VII. She married William Courtenay – who was later suspected of being involved in the conspiracy of the Yorkist pretender, Edmund de la Pole. Edmund de la Pole also happened to be Catherine’s cousin, the son of King Edward IV’s younger sister, Elizabeth of York. #elizabethofyork #houseofyork #warsoftheroses #henryviii #henryviiiwives #alisonweir #tudor #tudorhistory #historicalfiction #plantaganet #royalhistory #kingsandqueens #thetudors #maryi #royalfamily #kingsofengland

Elizabeth of York by Alison Weir. I pretty much love any historical non-fiction book by Alison Weir, so I was in my element here. Especially as we are talking about a biography of a Tudor woman! I feel like Weir was slightly taking on a role of being an apologist for Elizabeth, which is understandable. Weir very much straddles that tightrope between reading the historical record and also offering reasons for why Elizabeth has been perceived in a certain way. Weir is also great at not being tempted at too much conjecture or interiority, focusing on fleshing out the narrative with court records. There’s a lot here about architecture, Tudor politics, court ceremonial, religion etc. Inevitably Elizabeth remains a slightly shadowy figure, but I think the details of her childhood definitely provided great new context. Her origin story and the intensity of the dynastic struggles of the Wars of the Roses help contextualise her conciliatory role a lot! It’s so fascinating to have a woman rescued from the historical record. #elizabethofyork #biography #womenbiographies #tudorwomen #historicalnonfiction #historicalread #alisonweir #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #nonfictionreads #historynonfiction

The wonderful joy of going to visit places mentioned in the books you love 💙 Even better to do it while you’re in the midst of reading 📖 This time I was on the Tudor trail with Elizabeth of York as I read Alison Weir’s biography of this often overlook Queen of Henry VII. @ludlowcastleofficial was the site of her son’s death, a place she actively avoided after Arthur’s demise, but a place that also represented the Tudor dynasty’s view and dreams for themselves. Raglan Castle owned by @cadwcymruwales was somewhere she came to later in life, spending a week there on progress, potentially on the trail of what happened to her brothers. Raglan was a place where Henry VII was kept as a child and the Anglo-Welsh Herbert family were Elizabeth’s relatives. I think visiting places like these castles goes a little way to help contextualise and clarify the complexities of the Yorkist/Lancastrian/Tudor mythology. Of course there are loads of castles and palaces mentioned in this tome, but I felt super lucky to visit these two whilst reading it 📖 📷 @d_rebeccah and yours truly #alisonweir #ludlowcastle #raglancastle #tudorbook #tudorbooks #elizabethofyork #onthetudortrail #thetudors #henryvii #ludlow #raglan #monmouthshire #castles #ludlowcastle #raglancastle #tudors #historicalfiction #historicalnonfiction #historicalbiography #tudorwomen #tudorbiography #alisonweirbooks

On 20th March 1469, Elizabeth Woodville, queen of Edward IV gave birth to a daughter, who was named Cicely (or Cecily, spellings differ), presumably after her grandmother, Cicely Neville, Duchess of York. During her childhood, Cicely was considered as a possible bride for the son of James III of Scotland, but she suffered a dramatic loss in status when her father died, and her uncle, Richard III had Cicely and all her siblings declared illegitimate. After the battle of Bosworth, Cicely and her sisters were restored to legitimacy, but there was to be no royal husband for the princess. In 1487, she married John, Viscount Welles, the half-brother of Lady Margaret Beaufort. Cicely and Lady Margaret seem to have been on good terms and when Cicely was widowed and made a second marriage in 1503 that Henry VII disapproved of, Lady Margaret averted the worst of the king’s anger. #onthisdayinhistory 18th March 1496, Mary Tudor, sister of Henry VIII and Queen of France, is born. Mary was born to the then reigning monarch Henry VII and Elizabeth of York on this day in 1496. In 1514 Mary was married aged 18 to the 52 year old king of France, Louis XII. He died no more than three months into the marriage. Remembering a promise her brother had made to let her choose her husband once Louis was dead, Mary turned to the man she had likely been in love with since before the marriage. Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk was by all accounts a handsome man, and he was Mary’s choice. They married secretly in 1515, having technically committed treason for doing so without Henry VIII’s consent. They were let off lightly given the King’s great love for them both and given a fine, rather than the usual fate of execution. One wonders whether had they done this later in the King’s reign they would have gotten away so easily! They had four children together, with Mary dying in 1533. There are many speculated causes from tuberculosis to cancer. This left Brandon free to move onto wife number four! Mary’s marriage to him is one of the great love matches of the Tudor period, after the ‘love’ matches of her brother! Image 1: ‘The Coronation of Queen Mary’ c.1514. #OTD 18th March 1496 Mary Tudor, future Queen of France and Duchess of Suffolk, was born at Richmond Palace. The 4th child, 2nd surviving daughter of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. In 1514 Henry VIII negotiated a peace treaty with the French King Louis XII, a condition of which was that Mary was to be married to the aged French Monarch. However, the marriage lasted a few short months (contemporary observers thought him to have been exhausted in an effort to keep up with his beautiful young wife!) Charles Brandon was entrusted with negotiating the widowed Mary’s safe return to England, however their love for one another flourished and, much to her brother’s displeasure, she and Charles married. Henry was furious with the couple, lesser mortals would have been thrown into the Tower, however Charles was like a brother to him and he loved his youngest sister, so instead they incurred an enormous fine! King George V appears to be living his best life while Queen Mary looks extremely bored 🥱 incidentally I wonder which football team the King would have supported? 📸: 1&2 are photos of the Royal Family at a football match 3) Queen Mary in her element inspecting nurses at Buckingham Palace 4) Queen Mary, the Princess Royal, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret 5) Queen Mary at Badminton during the second world war 6) Queen Mary and her son the Duke of Kent 7)Queen Mary, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Kent 8) Queen Mary, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Photographs from the RCT #kinggeorgev #georgev #maryofteck #kinggeorge #queenmary #queenmaryofteck #princessmary #princessmaryofteck #dukeofyork #duchessofyork #princessmaryprincessroyal #princessofwales #countessofharewood #maryprincessroyal #queenelizabeth #queenelizabethii #elizabeth#princesselizabeth #elizabethofyork #princesselizabethofyork #princessmargaret #princessmargaretrose #elizabethboweslyon #queenelizabethqueenmother #georgevi #kinggeorgevi #princealbert #elizabethalexandramary #elizabethalexandramarywindsor #princessmargaretofyork

The Prince That Never Was …. Supposedly, these are the rooms that Elizabeth of York gave birth to her longed for son, Prince Arthur. Winchester was the chosen birthplace, as it was always thought it was the actual ancient spot of Camelot. Despite the grand plans for little Arthur to be as legendary as his namesake, it wasn’t to be. Arthur would die terribly young whilst in training for his Prince of Wales role out in Ludlow. You can’t help but wonder if he’d have lived, how utterly different history might have been. . . . Would we have been as obsessed with the Tudor dynasty as we are today ? 🤔

Elizabeth of York (11.2.1466 - 11.2.1503) was the Queen of England from 1486, when she married Henry VII until her death. She was born the eldest daughter of Edward IV, sister of the Princes in the Tower and mother of Henry VIII. Because of the probable murder of her brothers, many viewed her as the rightful heir to the throne. Her mother claimed sanctuary with her daughters, and her uncle Richard III seized the throne, and the country was riven by war. He expressed an interest in marrying Elizabeth, but he later denied this. She married Henry Tudor after he defeated Richard at the battle of Bosworth. She was described as intelligent and beautiful and famed for her charity to others. Her mother in law, Lady Margaret Beaufort, was a formidable character, but the two women got on well. Only four of her seven children survived infancy. Critically, the heir to the throne, Arthur, Prince of Wales, died when he was fifteen, so his brother Henry inherited the throne, and eventually, his wife Catherine of Aragon. She developed a close relationship with her husband. Henry and the family were deeply shocked at her death. #elizabethofyork #henryvii #henryviii #princesinthetower
