This Uneeda Biscuit ghost sign caught me by surprise because I was mostly passing through too early or too late and it was always dark. On my last day of work I took a quick drive through town and luckily saw it right before I left for home. I’m sure I missed a few but needed to get on the road. Here’s a little nugget of history.. did you know how the name “Nabisco” came about? I didn’t until now! Adolphus W. Green, with a history as a Chicago attorney specializing in consolidating businesses to form trusts, joined with two other men to form the National Biscuit Company (later dubbed Nabisco) in 1898. Green took a personal interest in seeing that the original flagship product – the Uneeda Biscuit – was a success. Before the U.S. snack staples of Ritz Crackers (1934), Honey Maid Graham Crackers (1925), Oreo Cookies (1912), or even Barnum’s Animals Crackers (1902), there was Nabisco’s Uneeda Biscuit. The National Biscuit Company came into being in 1898, when the New York Biscuit Company and the American Biscuit & Manufacturing Company merged. The new snack manufacturer wanted to capture the American public’s interest and make a splash on the market, and so they introduced a new cracker: the Uneeda Biscuit. This soda cracker was a hit. By 1900, the company was selling 10 million packages a month. Here we see the National Biscuit Company’s factory in Chelsea ca. 1905, proudly proclaiming the building — the largest cracker bakery in the world at the time — as the home of the successful Uneeda Biscuit. A little over a week ago, there was a multi alarm blaze that gutted 16, 14 and 12 South Main Street in Port Chester, NY. The fire started at 16, (built in 1860) which this amazing ghostad is painted on. It was resurrected several years ago when 18 S Main Street (built in 1949) was demolished, and has been on full display, slowly deteriorating and revealing multiple ghost layers..a palimpsest if you will. As the layers slowly deteriorate in the southern sun, double ghosts of UNEEDA Biscuit and Coca Cola are very obvious. The upper ghost was most likely a local wedding cake maker with its 3 digit phone number. The site was slated for demolition, but for some reason, it remained vacant with no activity. The fire, which it’s cause is unknown, has sped up the schedule for demolition. If you haven’t already gone to capture this awesome window into the past, I suggest you don’t hesitate bc it’s certainly not going to last. Лицо и голова в идеальном состоянии, на ручках потрескалось верхнее покрытие- есть кракелюр. Милый, родной ромпер-комбезик в полосочку, желтый плащик. Потерял мальчонка рыбацкую шляпу, но мы надели соломенную- нам нравится!☺️ Печеньки давно слопаны (с 1914 года то😃), поэтому держит мальчик просто винтажную коробочку. Два события произошли когда-то в Америке: 🎈 в 1898 г образовалась компания Nabisco ( the National Biscuit company) , которая объединила несколько пекарен и мелких пекарских компаний. Сразу был запущен новый для страны СОДОВЫЙ КРЕКЕР и беспрецедентная рекламная компания стоимостью $7 млн. 🎈в 1901 г. Маленький американский мальчик по имени Gordon Stille был приведен родителями в фотосалон, наряжен в желтый плащ и рыбацкую шляпу и сфотографирован. Впоследствии, за негатив снимка, Nabisco заплатила родителям $100 , и о дальнейшем история умалчивает. Малыш в желтом плаще и с коробкой крекеров в ручке был включен в рекламную компанию и стал узнаваем по всей стране на долгие десятилетия! А в 1914 году кукольная компания Ideal выпустила куклу (в последствии еще 3, немного отличающихся одеждой и размером)мальчика в желтом плаще в поддержку Nabisco. Кукла-мальчик был на мягком теле, с головой, ручками и ножками из композита. Одежда состояла из полосатого ромпера, желтого плаща и шляпы. А в ручках-неизменная коробка со вкусными печенюшками! #tb 1912 & today: Facing toward the northeast corner of Lexington Ave & E 27th St in Rose Hill, Manhattan. . Whilst the buildings on the left side of the old photo have since sadly been replaced or altered, fortunately, the corner and buildings on the right are still standing. Note the well-dressed children standing on the corner and a young boy seemingly inspecting the trolley tracks in the middle of the road. . Also, note the large Nabisco posters advertising Uneeda Biscuits and Graham Crackers for just 5 and 10 cents respectively. As mentioned in a previous post, the Uneeda Biscuit used to be Nabisco’s signature product in the way that Oreo’s are to the company today.
