💜My Sister 💜 Today last year I lost my sister, unexpectedly, at the too young age of 59. I didn't know what to do in this state of shock. Nothing much to do but sit around and think about it. I went to the record store to take my mind off things and saw this Alice Coltrane reissue of her most beautiful 'Journey In Satchidananda' with the great Pharoah Sanders. Immediately I thought this is the thing to get. Sounds that are almost as beautiful as my sister. It just seemed fitting. I took it home and played it and thought of her for the remainder of the day, confused, bewildered, sad, angry. Satchidananda is a sanskrit epithet & description for the subjective experience of the ultimate unchanging reality, called Brahman. It represents existence, consciousness, bliss & truth. It seemed too fitting. Now every time I listen to it, I think of her. She loved the color purple. Hence the purple bandana. She also loved children's films like Charlotte's Web and James and the Giant Peach. And also enjoyed line dancing! She was special and is usually the first thing on my mind when I wake up and last thing on my mind before falling asleep. Months later, on Jan 30th 2024, my father joined her. A lot of loss in the last 365 days, but the memories give them eternal life in my heart. I miss and love you so much sister I can't believe it's been a year. I got to pen the back of her memorial card, with an original poem which I've also shared. I wish you all could've known her. Rest in peace Dorette. We love you very very very much and it just isn't the same without you. It's 1999 and Tom Waits unloads a masterpiece in Mule Variations. Possibly one of the two best Tom joints in my opinion. Cook up that Filipino Box Spring Hog! On Rolling Stones 500 greatest list, and Tom even brought home a Grammy for it! Moving back 1996 and we've got Shot! The major label debut by Jesus Lizard. Moving from Touch and Go to Capitol Records, and it didn't diminish the crunch. It's definitely different than say Liar or Goat, but it still has that JL madness. A special first time on wax RSD special on orange & black vinyl. A major gut punch of an LP. Limited to 2500 copies! And of course I gotta sneak a lil Dusty in the background! Aladdin In The Night! Whoa double whammy #albumanniversary Aladdin Sane turns 51. Must admit, it's far from my favorite Bowie... But it does have one of the most recognizable album covers of all time, and one of the most classic Bowie photos of all time. It was the follow up to Ziggy, and despise some solid tracks, I don't think it holds up to Ziggy or Hunky Dory. This one not produced by Tony Visconti, but instead Bowie and Ken Scott. Maybe that's where it went wrong? Anywho, still a classic Bowie nonetheless. Just not as memorable as others of the era. Just one man's opinion of course. Then we got Fleetwood Mac with Tango in the Night which turns 37 today! The last studio album to feature the classic lineup of Mick, Lindsey, Stevie and John & Christine. Lindsey would depart after writing a bulk of this release, and we wouldn't see all of this perfect crew fully together again until the 1997 live album and video, 'The Dance', which I recall catching on PBS several times in the late 90s. A very great filmed concert indeed. Buckingham even co-produced this baby. To buy wax that is advertised as 'Target Exclusive'. Ya just don't think hip records when you think Target but, I was there. I needed a coffee maker stat! Well... I ended up with the maker. A Muhammad Ali T shirt, and just couldn't resist this quite affordable and surprisingly great sounding "Target Exclusive" clear copy of definitely the best Pearl Jam album in my opinion. Haggardtow! Two slam-jammers for your sizzler Saturday! Whoa we got a major #albumanniversary in Tool's 'Undertow'. Still one of the best in my opinion. Back then you didn't know what they'd do next. It was refreshing. As it was 1993 and this wasn't grunge. A robust debut full album after a rough EP in Opiate which sounds different. Then after this came Aenima which sounded different thanks to a brand new bassist. Then Lateralus which was different enough I suppose. Saw em tour for it and was a bit let down. A Perfect Circle was better live imo. So this is one of only two golden Tool nuggets if you ask me. But I know many who'd disagree. Happy 31st birthday Undertow! Happy birthday Leon & Marvin! It's April 2nd and we've got two birthdays from 2 legends here! Leon Russell was born Claude Russell Bridges in Lawton Oklahoma 1942, the same year as my Dad. Not even a month older! Leon had already made a splash in the studio musician world before his debut album dropped. Working on Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew band and appearing on albums by The Beach Boys, the Ronettes, the Crystals etc, and has also worked with the likes of Barbra Streisand, the Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra and many more. The public may not have known the name, but musicians did. So much so that on his first album, names like Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Ringo Starr, Steve Winwood, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman and more lent a hand in it's creation. That sounds like a dang supergroup to me! Leon also mentored Elton John, appeared with Joe Cocker's (and stole the show according to some critics) Mad Dogs & Englishmen, and can't forgot George's Concert for Bangladesh. Yup he was there too. All hail Leon! Then we've got the Prince of Motown Marvin Gaye, born today in 1939. After a stint with the US Air Force Marvin moved to music, forming The Marquees and soon began working for Bo Diddley and others! 50 And Bible Black! 🎉 We got a whopper #albumanniversary today woohoo! The 6th King Crimson studio album is a half a century old today! Starless and Bible Black! From the Wetton years! 3 albums made with Wetton and the other two are so darn good that it technically makes this the weakest of the 3, but it still rocks hard! Much more laid back than Larks and not as epic as Red, this album still has its fair share of bangers! And they'd released Red in the same year! Some workaholics for sure! Jamie Muir didn't return for this one, leaving it as a 4 piece band. Robert of course, plus John Wetton, Bill Bruford and David Cross (no not the comedian, lol). On their next they'd appear to be a 3 piece as the core band, but Cross would return listed as an "additional musician" along with the great Mark Charig and Mel Collins of Crimson albums past, AND the return of Ian McDonald! Red is definitely a beast of an album and we'll be celebrating 50 years on that one this upcoming autumn! Fun fact! Acid Mothers Temple, in homage to both Crimson and Sabbath (two acts that pretty much debuted at the same time) released an album titled Starless and Bible Black Sabbath in 2006!
