Seaton Sluice, between Blyth and Whitley Bay in Northumberland. It was once an important port exporting salt, coal and glass bottles. The harbour was prone to silting up, so a pier and sluice gate were added in the 1600s to help maintain it (hence the name). Get lost in Thrunton Woods, the enchanted woodland that holds winding pathways perfect for walks, mountain biking and horse riding. Spectacular viewpoints overlook Northumberland’s wild scenery and lichen-clad trees showcase their ever-changing colours throughout the year. Planted around the jutting sandstone escarpments of Thrunton Crag to the north and Long Crag and Coe Crag to the south, trails weave and cut through the forests, breaking out into open moorland with striking views across the Whittingham Vale and the Cheviot Hills. Head to the prehistoric fort, Castle Hill, before visiting the hand-hewn cave and one-time solitary retreat of Macartney, a 19th century monk from nearby Callaly. Mischievous hobgoblins are fabled to dwell here and play tricks on passers by, and you can walk stony gully of Hob’s Nick, named after impish hobgoblins. The story of the 'Pickled Parson' concerns the death of the Reverend John Garbage who died in the second week of December 1747, a few days before he was to collect the tithes in his name, for the upkeep of the parish. The vicar's wife faced the predicament of poverty, and came up with the unusual solution of preserving the body of her deceased husband in salt, (some say it was brandy), propping his body up at his desk to give the impression that he was still alive when people came to pay their tithes. Sedgefield's impressive former rectory in Rectory Row dates from 1793 and was built by Bishop Barrington of Durham to replace the earlier rectory that was destroyed in a fire. Now called Ceddesfeld Hall. Lammerside Castle, Kirkby Stephen Evening everyone, hope you've enjoyed the three minutes of sunshine we've had this week and managed to get some Vitamin D. Tonight's place suffers from a bit of an identity crisis, as it is situated in Cumbria but also resides in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. But wherever it is, it's a fab little ruin. Built sometime in the 14th century, Lammerside was likely constructed by the Warcop family. The castle formed an impressive complex in its day. A central tower house was surrounded by attached wings to the north and south. A barmkin wall enclosed a courtyard to the west, and further buildings stood to the south. This is a beautiful, peaceful area and it's unlikely you'll see anyone else on your visit. Pendragon Castle is about a 10 minute drive away too, if you want to do a bit more sightseeing. According to old legend, the hills of Simonside are inhabited by a dangerous group of dwarves lurking in the shadows. They prey on lost travellers during the dead of night, alluring them with a small light off the edge of a precipice, or into a dark bog. Many travellers have told stories of the Duergars and their deadly antics, even trying to prove they don’t exist, yet then find the opposite when venturing out into their dwarfish domain. In the depths of the woodlands, you might find yourself face-to-face with a Duergars stone hut. One traveller who approached a hut was ambushed by the Duergars with clubs, barely escaping with his life. Pray you don’t find their hut in the night. Lindisfarne Castle, sited atop of the volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the Castle was built in the 1550’s using stones from the demolished Priory. Corbridge is another jewel in the crown of Northumberland. Grown from the Roman town of CORSTOPITUM, a supply town for the troops on Hadrian’s Wall. From the beginning Corstopitum provided much of the building stones used in the construction of many of the village buildings, including the church, Vicar’s Pele and nearby castles. In the thirteenth century Corbridge was second only to Newcastle in wealth and its citizens were heavily taxed to help pay for Edward 1’s Scottish wars and its mediaeval street plan is much the same today. The Saxon church however has trebled in size by the addition of aisles, transepts and chancel to the inner Saxon tower and nave whilst The Vicar’s Pele illustrates the fierceness of Border warfare which burnt Corbridge to the ground several times. The bridge at Corbridge is the oldest of the mediaeval bridges which became derelict by the 17th century, and was finally replaced in 1674. As far back as 1827 Corbridge was a place renowned for its small shops and several of the decorated fronts still survive. The name "Whickham" is Anglo-Saxon, meaning "estate with a quickest hedge", but nothing is heard of Whickham until well after the Norman Conquest. It is in the Boldon Book, compiled for the Bishop of Durham in 1183, that we have the first documentary evidence of life in the village. In "Quykham" the Bishop had 35 tenants, each of whom held an ox gang of land, about 15 acres. In return, the tenants paid 16d rent and were obliged to perform the following services for their lord: work for the Bishop three days per week, carry the Bishop's baggage between Durham and Bedlington when required, serve in his fishery in the Tyne, provide a cow, a hen and 10 eggs and pay 9s cornage rent for milling. #whickhamgateshead #whickham #gatesheadside #gatesheadheritage #visitnortheastengland #visitgateshead
The tower of the parish church also shows some evidence of defensive use. The ground floor is covered by a stone-vaulted roof. This measure was often used to fireproof the tower and turn it into a refuge during Scottish raids.
