A few months ago when I received an email advising I'd been nominated for my work it took me by surprise. Good morning, Giving a little intro as thought it was time for a new hat, new hanging (wip) and new home shot! So my name is Suzanne, I am an artist, weaver, botanical printer, floral crafter & earth lover! I live with my husband, two kids and our border collie on the South Devon coast. I’m the founder of Nest & Burrow, an idea inspired by my love of nature ~ it truly is my medicine. I have been working with pure wool for over 15 years now, creating textural designs to cosy up homes all over the world. Whilst living in Australia (we returned to the UK in 2012) I discovered Merino Wool and instantly fell in love with its amazing qualities. After the birth of my first child in 2009 I developed my passion into a home run business. I design OOAK wall hanging collections and private commissions. In 2017 I began teaching weaving. Having loved running workshops in my previous career with the World-Wide Fund for Nature it was time to combine that love with creativity for personal well-being. During Covid I set up the Nest & Burrow online weaving school and after moving to Devon in 2020 between lock downs I began to learn about botanical printing on textiles and have also started teaching workshops at our beautiful local flower farm in South Milton. I have also explore & developed my interest in the plant kingdom and have been combining that with my love of ritual & space clearing to also bring you floral crafting ideas and workshops. I’m passionate about changing the world. And one extremely impactful way to do that is to empower women. My belief is that by encouraging women to take more time out for themselves, and through the exploration and development of their creativity, they can truly get to know themselves and their dreams. “I am passionate about helping women explore and develop their creativity.” In 2024, I have already run my ritualise spring workshops & from now - September I’m offering weaving & botanical printing through 1 day workshops & a retreat. Deze term hoorde ik voor het eerst op een design summit. Overigens hoor ik een verkorte versie nu ook vaak bij mij thuis want wat vroeger een alto was bij mij op de middelbare, heet nu een emo. Enfin, weet je dat ook weer. Maar goed, emopreneur dus. Een ondernemer die af en toe medelijden met zichzelf heeft. Omdat een klant moeilijk doet. Of een teamlid iets verkloot. Medelijden met jezelf omdat je toch zo lekker je creativiteit de vrije loop moet laten en niet bezig moet zijn met klanten die je het leven moeilijk maken. Een emopreneur is een ondernemer die over zich heen laat lopen. Die niet soepel communiceert en geen duidelijke grenzen aangeeft. Op de summit omschreef en iemand het als een Mac-aapje dat opdrachten van klanten uitvoert 🐒 😂. Maar goed, behoorlijk depri dus. En op een dag heb je er genoeg van. Ik ook trouwens Sowieso had ik al besloten om een andere weg in te slaan in mijn leven maar nu moest het ook in mijn werk gebeuren. Ik was immers niet voor niks voor mezelf begonnen. Het leek wel alsof ik een beetje vergeten was dat ik zelf kon bepalen wanneer en met wie ik wilde werken. Die reminder had ik even nodig. En dus ging ik van emopreneur weer naar entrepreneur. En geloof me, daar is het veel leuker. Want inmiddels heb ik een bedrijf opgebouwd waar ik trots op ben. Waarbij ik met de beste mensen uit het veld mag werken en waarbij ik elke dag klanten bij kan maken met een website die bij hen en hun bedrijf past. We did a photoshoot in Paris!? 🇫🇷👶🥐 (Also swipe for the cutest “mmmm” sound as baby Layla chomped happily on a baguette) Not sure why I sat on these photos since they were taken in September, but here they are now! Layla turned 18 months yesterday and it feels like a bit of a milestone for ME, too. I didn’t realize just how tectonic the shifts of motherhood would be. Maybe I’ll share more about that story someday after time has passed, but I’m just happy to be where I am now. Becoming a mom has also made me a better entrepreneur. TBH, before she came along, I was attached to results (financial & otherwise) in a really unhealthy way. We’re talking a complete-identity-collapse-if-I-didn’t-hit-my-goal kind of way. Before, I could tell myself: “I’m still okay if I don’t hit this goal” but it felt very intellectual, in my head. Now I actually FEEL and EMBODY that on a visceral level. And the cool thing I’m celebrating? 🎉 It hasn’t made me any less driven or motivated. I’m still that girl. I guess those yoga teachers knew what they were talking about all along 🤪

En als je ervoor blijft kiezen om je prijzen alleen te bepalen op basis van tijd, dan beperk je je eigen groei. Wat ik daarmee bedoel? Nou, als je je diensten prijst op basis van de tijd die je nodig hebt om een klus te klaren, laat je onbedoeld een hele hoop geld liggen. Het gaat om het berekenen van je prijzen op basis van het resultaat wat je werk oplevert, en niet zozeer de tijd die het kost. Belangrijk is het dus om vooraf over soortgelijke vragen na te denken: Wat gaat het je klant opleveren als alle afspraken voortaan gemaakt (en verzet!) kunnen worden via hun website? Wat gaat het die aannemer opleveren als hij voortaan in 1x keer alle informatie binnen krijgt om een offerte maken, in plaats van dat daar 3 mails en 2 belletjes overheen gaan? Dat zijn de zaken die je je vooraf moet afvragen en op basis waarvan je je prijzen moet bepalen. En vooruit, ook een beetje de tijd die het kost. Laten we met z’n allen als webdesigners stoppen onszelf tekort te doen. Laten we onze prijzen berekenen op basis van de impact die ons werk heeft en niet op hoeveel tijd je eraan kwijt bent. I love how mornings start brighter and warmer this time of year and all the way to fall. I developed this healthier take on Eggs Benedict recipe for a client with the help of a friend who did the smoking for me. It uses a smoked salmon fillet, which is more flakey and less salty than lox. The creaminess of the eggs and the sauce pair well with the smokey salmon, and it sneaks some extra iron in with the spinach, using the english muffin as a vehicle to deliver all of the layers of flavor in one bite.

Je hebt het waarschijnlijk wel eens meer gehoord: niet perfect is ook goed genoeg. Dat geldt ook voor je designs. Misschien ben je nog niet zover om aan iedereen die het wil horen te vertellen dat je webdesigner bent. Of misschien wil je die post die je hebt geschreven eerst nog even doorlezen voordat je ‘m publiceert. Of blijf je sleutelen aan je website en die ene afbeelding nog net even vervangen voordat je je pagina live zet. Geloof me: been there, done that. En soms betrap ik mezelf erop dat ik er nog in blijf hangen. Want zeker bij het starten van je webdesign business is het beter om gewoon maar te “doen” in plaats van te wachten of blijven sleutelen tot het perfect is. Want als je blijft sleutelen, blijf je ook twijfelen. En vaak gaat dat over dingen die er totaal niet te doen. Het lettertype voor op je website. Welke afbeelding van jezelf je zal kiezen. Dat zijn allemaal geen dingen waaraan je CONCREET kan afmeten of het voor of tegen de groei van je bedrijf gaat werken. Het is vooral zonde van je tijd. Als je niet weet of je wijziging effect heeft, kan je ook niet weten of het zin heeft om die door te voeren. En dan krijg je dus een beetje een 🐔🥚kip-ei situatie, want als je nooit op publiceren klikt, heb je nooit iets om te vergelijken. Snap je wat ik bedoel? Je weet zelf eigenlijk ook wel dat je pas na een paar weken testen goed kunt meten of de kleur van de knoppen op je website inderdaad uitmaakt bij het aantal aanvragen dat je binnenkrijgt (pro tip: meer leren over A/B testen? Schrijf je dan zeker even in voor de nieuwsbrief van Jakub Linowski). Dan weet je pas of het toevoegen van een banner bovenaan je website verschil maakte. Dus: gewoon doen. Publiceren die hap. Op socials posten. En rap een beetje 💨 Dat geldt eigenlijk voor al het andere dat je ook doet in je bedrijf. Of het nou marketing is of onboarding van je klanten. Het begint altijd met het publiceren om er vervolgens naar te kijken en te bepalen wat wel/niet werkt. Je kunt beter een hele hoop info hebben om te bepalen wat wel en niet werkt, dan een hele hoop perfectionisme waardoor er eigenlijk niks gebeurd.
