Recently I realised that I've lived in the same house for over 8 years now... and that kind of rocked my world for a moment. I moved house so many times growing up. I remember my mum asking me after one move whether it had sunk in yet. I think she was expecting a big response from me but no, it was just another move. The one that did seem to affect everything for years following, was our Old Farmhouse where I lived from the age of 11 to 19. The longest I'd lived anywhere. I have so many wonderful and tough memories there the place is hugely a part of me. So to reach the same milestone in our house now is quite something. ad Beautiful Valbanne where we arrived early one morning to film a huge lesson on light - no bigger subject in photography! The early start meant I got a clear shot of the yellow building you can see in the first photo and the video. I’d tried and failed at this shot several times before! 💛 We had a huge day ahead of us, needing to find examples of every kind of light, and I remember wondering around for ages looking for harsh shadows, which is not something I normally seek out! At the end of the day we stopped and bought a “prop” wine, and had a cheeky sit down in a cafe to the right of that beautiful yellow building. I continue to work my way through the beautiful wood covers made for me by Tore Vollan. Tore was the Bestefar (Norwegian for grandpa) of my goddaughter Hannah. Tore, based in Seattle, Washington, was a master woodworker. He crafted fine clocks, chests, trays and jewellery boxes for over 20 years, often having his work displayed in galleries and winning awards. At our goddaughter’s initiative he created a set of book covers for me to make into a journal for her. This renewed his joy of woodworking and he swiftly created hundreds of covers that his granddaughter would either bring in her suitcase or mail to Winnipeg. We would talk over the phone and he would instruct me on how to finish the wood pieces properly. Tore died in April of 2018. His last act in his wood shop was to pack up all of his unfinished work and send it to Canada. I am so honoured to be able to incorporate Tore’s beautifully crafted wooden covers in the books I make. I treasure every set that sits in my studio ready to be transformed into a book. This stripe pattern of laminated strips of exotic woods was one of his signature designs and I would have to say is my personal favourite! Endlich wieder Sonnenschein! Nach gefühlt niemals enden wollenden kalten Tagen, an denen ich unzählige Male frostempfindliche Pflanzen, vorgezogene Dahlien und frisch gekeimte Sämlinge erst rein und dann wieder rausgetragen habe. Wer braucht da noch eine Mitgliedschaft im Fitnessstudio? Gartenarbeit mit Trainingseffekt und klar - ab und zu auch Rückenschmerzen. Aber was tut man nicht alles für seine mühsam ausgesäten Schätze? All die Arbeit von einer einzigen frostigen Nacht zunichte gemacht? Dann doch lieber Muskelkater … Dieses Bild habe ich am 8. April aufgenommen. Inzwischen haben sich fast alle Tulpen verabschiedet, auch wenn das kalte Wetter der letzten Tage ihrem Verblühen noch einmal Aufschub gewährt hat. Aber so Vieles andere steht bereits in den Startlöchern: Pfingstrosen, Bartiris und sogar die ersten Rosenknospen zeigen Farbe.
