Thanks to LeRiche Wines for inviting me to the pre release tasting of their 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Etienne Le Riche is a legend in the South African winemaking community. He spent 20 years at Rustenberg Estates, becoming one of the finest producers of this cultivar in the country, and was instrumental in establishing Stellenbosch as one of the world's great regions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Le Riche left Rustenberg in 1996 to pursue his dream of making wines under his own name, and so the eponymous brand was begun. From the very beginning, his wines have garnered critical acclaim, and in a very short period of time, Le Riche Wines has become regarded as one of South Africa's finest Cabernet Sauvignon producers. Following in his father's footsteps, Christo LeRiche is now head winemaker, and it was a fascinating experience to taste through a number of their wines with him yesterday. Christo explained that they have longstanding contracts (most simply sealed with a handshake) with 14 growers in the Stellenbosch area, where a variety of different aspects, altitudes and soils (including a vineyard of bush vines - unusual for Cabernet Sauvignon) provide the grapes for their flagship blend. All vineyard plots are vinified separately and matured for 12 months in barrel (75% new) prior to blending before being returned to barrel for another year. For a review of the stunning 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, I would suggest reading the one by Master of Wine Greg Sherwood published on his blog - it's pure poetry. Unsurprisingly it was the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve which really captivated me - deep garnet in the glass with a brooding nose offering up aromas of dried figs, prunes, Medjool dates, clove, cedar, cigar box and dusty farm road, the still lively acidity and persistent but now silky tannins providing structure amply supported by the now dried fruit and spices with flavours of prunes, dates, chocolate and cocoa, a creaminess on the palate and a lingering finish. Aged Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon at it's very finest. #cabernetsauvignon #stellenboschwine #Cabernet #ilovewine # #capetownsouthafrica #whatsinmyglass #wset #wsetalumni #oldwines

PSA: It’s only Wednesday. But if you can get your hands on a bottle of this Single Barrel Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey from @lawrenceburgbourbon, then your Wednesday might be a little more tolerable. We were first introduced to Lawrenceburg Bourbon Company at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival and were immediately fans. Their founder, Greg (@gentlemandistiller) is a Service-Disabled Navy Combat Veteran and a very nice guy. And they have great products, so that’s pretty awesome too. In fact, we’re headed back to KY this Saturday to do a tasting and thought what a great opportunity to crack this latest pickup from them for our What’s In My Glass Wednesday pour. Lawrenceburg Bourbon Co. SBBS Bourbon Price: $80 Proof: 118 Age: 4 Years Mash Bill: 70% Corn, 21% Rye, 9% Barley Nose: vanilla, cherry pie, confectioners sugar, has a phenomenal nose Palate: punch of spice and heat with notes of vanilla and very subtle oak Finish: long finish, ending sweetly with a lot of cherry and vanilla, a sweet candy bomb #bourbon #whiskey #verteranowned #bourbonwhiskey #wednesday #humpday #whatsinmyglass #whatsinmyglasswednesday #lawrenceburg #kentucky #kentuckybourbon #distillery #bourboncommunity #bourbonlover

This What’s in my Glass Wednesday finds us at the beginning of a distillery highlight for the first four days in May. And if we’re highlighting @bulleit, you better believe that we’re drinking it too. This 12 year rye is a hell of a great deal in this market, and we are absolutely enjoying the heck out of it. Bulleit 12 Year Rye Age: 12 Yrs MSRP: $55 Proof: 92 Nose: mint, typical rye spice, some citrus, pine Palate: nose matches the palate- mint, pine, punch of rye spice, a little bit of orange peel Finish: a little oaky, shorter finish, with some hints of leather, lingering rye spice. #bulleit #whiskey #bourbon #ryewhiskey #kentucky #kentuckybourbontrail #whatsinmyglass #whatsinmyglasswednesday #wednesday #nightcap # #humpday

Although Pinotage (a crossing between Pinot Noir and Cinsault - known locally as Hermitage at the time) dates back to 1925, the work of Professor Abram Perold at Elsenburg Agricultural College and Stellenbosch University, the first commercial bottling was only released for sale in 1961. This was the 1959 vintage labeled under the Lanzerac brand with the fruit having been grown at Bellevue and Kanonkop Estates. It is still relatively easy to find wines from the 1990's and even some from the 80's in South Africa today but examples from the 1970's and especially the 60's are now rare as hen's teeth.  This Oude Libertas Pinotage 1972, produced by the Stellenbosch Farmers Winery co-operative was a beautifully clear, deep garnet colour in the glass with tantalizing tertiary aromas of Bourneville cocoa, cigar box, liquorice, tobacco leaf, charred wood, crushed walnut shells and date loaf emanating from the glass. Medium plus bodied with medium alcohol (I would estimate no more than 12.5%) the tannins powdery but still assertive and the acidity vibrant, flavours mirrored the nose with nutty, savoury and smokey notes prominent but also dried fruit notes of prunes and dates providing a little more complexity on the palate before culminating in a lengthy finish. Wonderful old Pinotage. #Pinotage #pinotagelover #stellenboschwine #stellenbosch #Capetown #southafrica #southafricanwine #oldwines #vintagewine #1972 #1970's #redwine #ilovewine #whatsinmyglass #whatimdrinkingtonight #winegeek # #winescholar # #wineeducation #ilovewine #wsetalumni #old #stellenboschwineroute

"Think like a detective and argue like a lawyer" - for me blind tasting is still the most difficult part of learning about wine. As a physician we use a constellation of symptoms (what the patient complains of) and signs (what the doctor finds on the clinical examination) to construct a differential diagnosis - a number of possible options from which the ultimate correct diagnosis will eventually emerge.  Remarkably, blind tasting is at least in theory very similar. By assessing the aroma and flavour profile as well as the structural components of a wine including acidity, alcohol, residual sugar levels, level and nature of tannins etc, we should be able to narrow down what's in our glass to a smaller number of possibilities. If a white wine has high acidity, one would consider varieties including Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc but not Gewurstraminer or Viognier. By the same token a red wine with high levels of tannin might lead us to consider Nebbiolo, Xinomavro or Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot. Slowly one hopefully pieces together the puzzle to arrive at the correct cultivar, country and appellation. Cathy van Zyl M.W once said that "tasting is 90 % theory". Sadly this is much harder in practice than in theory.  #wine #blindtasting #whatsinmyglass #redwine #whitewine #winescholar # #winegeek #ilovewine #tasting #wsetalumni #dipwset

This What’s In My Glass Wednesday is right smack dab in the middle of this month’s distillery highlight of @makersmark (and my vacation). And since we’re talking about MM, let’s talk about this incredible release of their’s that I brought along with me. The Cellar Aged is a blend of 13% whiskey that was aged 11 years and 87% whiskey that was aged 12 years. The barrels that are selected for this bottle are aged like other traditional MM barrels and then moved to their cellar for an additional 5 or 6 years. If you do a tour at the distillery, you get to walk through the cellar and it is everything you’d think it would be. Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged Age: a blend of 11 & 12 years MSRP: $150 Nose: heavy caramel and some char, very sweet, hints of vanilla Palate: sweet and spicy, with the spice hitting in the front of the palate, followed by notes of caramel and cinnamon Finish: a buttery mouthfeel ends with some notes of red fruit, a shorter finish #bourbon #whiskey #bourbonwhiskey #makersmark #makersmarkbourbon #makersmarkdistillery #distillery #distilleryhighlight #whatsinmyglass #whatsinmyglasswednesday #cellaraged #kentuckybourbon #kentuckybourbontrail
