PAST LIVES (2023) is all subtle except for a scene where the now reunited Hae Sung and Nora after 12 years walk together while they pass through a sea of couples in the background either hugging or kissing or doing what not... this threw me back to the moments in CERTIFIED COPY (2010) where the newly married couple they meet in the film could very well be the reflection of the central couple 15 years earlier as she informs him that her marriage happened at the same place and the old couple they get to look at later in the film going hand-in-hand by supporting each other, could very well be the central couple after 15 years had everything been fine now. But, what's striking here in 'Past Lives' although you get the feeling of Celine Song overdoing it by placing so many such couples in their way, is that, we are never given Hae Sung and Nora's atttention to them as they just go about minding their own business without a hint of taking detour into the "what if" or "ohh them could've been us" zone unlike the hints of such feelings we get in the aforementioned latter moment in 'Certified Copy'! P.S. And then, of course, I found out what Celine Song had to say on the expected lines of longing regarding them going only until a hug but not kiss or beyond...

Directed and written by Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa, 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘧𝘵 (2014) introduces us to Nana (played by Jen), a single mother caring for her two boys; one of her sons is suffering from an unexplained terminal illness & the other is free-spirited with an interest in falconry. Nana seeks out a traveling faith healer in hopes of a miraculous cure because her little town has no medical facilities. A miracle emerges when Nana discovers she has a healing touch. Fast-forward to twenty years later: Ivan (Nana’s one surviving son), now played by Cillian Murphy, receives an unexpected visit from a French documentarian (Mélanie Laurent) who wants to create a movie about him. Ivan is now a professional falconer with a wife and a very dismal home of his own. The story switches back and forth between the past and the present as we uncover more about Ivan's early years, Nana's path to becoming a healer, and the circumstances that led to their estrangement. Jennifer said she immediately knew she wanted to work with Llosa after they met to discuss the project. I think it’s admirable that Jen appreciates & partakes in passion projects, films that likely won’t be popular or resonate with everyone. Jen’s acting is superb and poignant. She radiates with frightening conviction. It was emotionally hard to watch her character languish in her tragedy. Nana had to age considerably, and it was interesting for both Jen and the viewers to see herself/her appear with wrinkles & gray hair. I’m intrigued to see Jennifer as she ages in real-life; I find wrinkles & other physical signs of aging quite beautiful. I don’t necessarily have any critiques for Jennifer, but I felt her character’s arc was hard to buy (mainly because we hardly see her in her full-on faith-healer mode after she’s aged). The landscape cinematography is stunning. The frozen terrain amplified the character’s burdens & despair. While filming in Manitoba, Canada, Jen said it was challenging to act in such a frigid environment. According to IMDb, temperatures dropped as low as -30F/-34C. I’m also from New York and know what being freezing feels like, but I couldn’t imagine myself making a day on that set 🥶

COPIE CONFORME . . Kiarostami'nin izlediğim ilk filmi. Çok farklı bir akışı var. Geçen bu sayfada olması gerektiğini düşünüp 2. kez izledim, ilk izlediğimde bazı şeyler havada kalmıştı. Öncelikle aksiyon, olay, kurgu bağımlılarının bu filme yaklaşmasını önermem. Benim gibi uzun uzun muhabbet edilsin, düşünürsün olay olmasa da olur diyenlere göre. Film İtalya'da Toscana'da çekilmiş, eşsiz bir yer gerçekten izlerken gözümüz de İtalya'ya bir güzel doyuyor. "Aslı Gibidir" isimli kitabın Amerikalı yazarının İtalya'da verdiği söyleşi sonrası Juliette Binoche hanımın ona etrafı gezdirirken ettikleri bazı muhabbetlerden ibaret film. Basitlik üzerine, orijinallik ve orijinalin kopyasının değeri, insanın verdiği değerin önemi, ilişki üzerine sohbetler. Öncesinde hangisi daha değerlidir diye sorsalardı herhalde "orijinal tabi" derdim. Ancak bu filmden sonra hangisine değer verdiysek o diyebilirim. Sanat da böyle değil mi. Daha geçen ay Mondrian'ın bir resmi 75 yıldır ters asılı duruyormus kimse fark etmemiş diye haber çıkmıştı, düşününce orijinal halinin pek de önemi yokmuş demek. Bir de orijinal her şeye de değer vermediğimizi fark ettim. İnsanlar da orijinal değil mi? Sanat eseri eğer orijinal ve estetik olansa insan da bir sanat eseri değil midir? Ya da doğadaki her ağaç, çiçek.. Bunlara sanat eseri demekten bizi alıkoyan şey onlara bir sanat eseriymiş gibi bakmamamız sadece. Mesela bir insan başkasının gözünde bir sanat eseriymiş gibi değerli görünürken sizin gözünüzde dünyanın en basit insanı olabilir. Bakan kişinin gözünde deriz ya güzellik, aynen öyle işte. "Şu servilere bakın. Ne kadar güzeller. Hiçbiri bir diğerine benzemiyor. Yaşlılar, biri bir yerde bin yaşında bir servi olduğunu söylemişti. Orijinallik, güzellik, yaş, işlevsellik:Sanat yapıtının tanımı işte. Tek fark, galeride değiller. Kimsenin fark etmediği tarlalardalar."
