On April 15th, we hosted a screening of Nobody’s Listening VR at Hunter College in New York, where our newest team member, Thikran Mato, a Yazidi activist and genocide survivor, shared his powerful story with students. Amidst the historic backdrop of Eleanore Roosevelt’s former home in Manhattan, the class delved into discussions on human rights and genocide prevention. Thikran eloquently recounted his life before the genocide and shed light on the ongoing struggles his community faces. Students engaged deeply, questioning the nature of justice and exploring avenues to raise awareness about the Yazidi genocide. Thikran emphasized the significance of solidarity with victims of atrocities worldwide, drawing parallels to current crises in Gaza and Ukraine. This talk will provide a historical overview of the Yezidi genocide, anchoring the narrative in testimonies gathered in Iraq in 2023 from Yezidi survivors who managed to escape ISIS captivity. It will discuss the importance of survivors’ testimony in allowing us to understand the motives of the perpetrators and the experience of captivity, and explore some of the difficulties of gathering oral histories in such a context. “The Darkness is Covering Me” - Salam Noh “Please open your door to help those persecuted. These people have lost everything, and they just want to have a new, simple life.” – Salam Noh Initiated and sponsored by UNO’s Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy, the exhibition was displayed at the UNO Art Gallery from January 10 to February 23, 2023. The author of this painting, Salam, is from the village of Ba’adre in the Nineveh plains of northern Iraq, close to the sacred Yazidi site of Lalish. In Greece Salam and his brothers for the first time found support for their artwork Salam, Ismail, and their brother Jason now run the website Brotherly Art, displaying all their artworks online and at exhibitions worldwide, and donating a share of their profits to refugees and displaced people in need. Ich besuchte ein Camp ca 1 Stunde von Dohouk entfernt, das seit 2015 besteht und wirklich gut organisiert ist. Dort leben 12.000 Menschen in Zelten und Hütten. Es gibt 3 Schulen, eine Klinik, Kindergarten und kleine Läden. Manche Leute üben dort ihre erlernten Berufe aus, Friseur, Elektriker, ich konnte mit einer Schneiderin sprechen, die seit 2015 im Camp lebt. Das Schicksal der Yezidi erschütterte 2014 die ganze Welt. Als die Truppen des Islamic State (ISIS) 2014 Syrien und den Irak überrollten, flohen die Yezidi in die Sinjar Mountains. Tausende verhungerten und verdursteten in den Bergen. Ihre Religion machte sie zu einem besonders verhassten Ziel der IS. Die Männer wurde getötet, Frauen jeden Alters verschleppt, darunter viele Kinder. Der Grüne Abgeordnete @michel.reimon war einer wenigen Politiker, die sich 2014 selbst ein Bild vor Ort machten. Viele Yezidi konnten über einen Korridor fliehen den syrisch-kurdische Kämpfer eine Zeitlang offen halten konnten, bevor die ISIS sie überrannte. Selbst nach 10 Jahren wagen sich die Yezidi nicht in ihre Heimatdörfer zurück. Die meisten würden gerne in der Gegend bleiben wo sie seit 10 Jahren in Camp untergebracht sind, das will aber die Kurdische Regierung nicht. Immerhin flohen geschätzte 500.000 Yezidi aus dem Gebiet um Sinjar, ohne sie würde dort die Kurden ev eine Minderheit werden.

📌 Ezidileri Kurtarma Ofisi’nin Mart 2023’te paylaştığı verilerine göre IŞİD Ağustos 2014’te Şengal ve çevresinde 6 bin 417 Ezidi Kürdü kaçırdı. Bunlarda 3 bin 548’si kadın, 2 bin 869’u erkekti. Aynı verilere göre, şu ana kadar 3 bin 562’si kurtarıldı ve 2 bin 693’ü hala kayıp. Ezidilerin daha önce de (73 ferman) saldırılara maruz kaldığı biliniyor. Bu son saldırı sonucunda da on binlerce Ezidi katledilmiş, binlerce Ezidi kadın köle yapılarak pazarlarda satılmıştır. Ağır insan hakları ihlallerine yol açan tüm bu saldırılar 21. yüzyılda hepimizin gözleri önünde gerçekleşmiştir. Böylesi ağır ihlaller karşısında başta BM olmak üzere ilgili mekanizmaların önleyici ve onarıcı görevlerini yerine getir(e)memiş olması bu organlar bakımından başarısızlıktan öte büyük bir utançtır. Ezid:innen feiern heute, dass die Welt erschaffen wurde und der Frühling beginnt. 🌸 Ezid:innen bemalen zu diesem Fest Eier, treffen sich zum Picknick und Tanz und verteilen das Hefegebäck Kuliçe an Nachbarn und Bedürftige. Oft werden Hauseingänge mit bunten Blumen geschmückt und rot-weiße Armbänder namens Bazinbar um die Handgelenke gebunden, damit sie vor Unheil schützen. Die Tradition der rot-weißen Bänder findet man aber auch bei syrisch-srthodoxen Christ:innen, wie Aramäer:innen oder auch in Bulgarien. Weil der Mittwoch für Ezid:innen ein Ruhetag und der Monat April heilig ist, fällt das Neujahrsfest jedes Jahr auf den ersten oder zweiten Mittwoch im April.
