#mayvinylchallenge 3. Best Album After A Hiatus Johnny Cash - American Recordings In the mid 80's Cash signed to Mercury records after being dropped by Columbia records in 1986. He would release 7 albums during his time(the final one in 1991)with Mercury, mostly to a lackluster reception. Cash would say in his autobiography "Cash by Johnny Cash" that he "didn't exist in the 80's". After a 3 year hiatus, in 1994 the world was given the birth of Cash's third act with the release of American Recordings on Rick Rubin's label of the same name. American Recordings features Cash simply singing & playing his guitar solo with no additional musicians. A true masterpiece & a sign of the amazing work he would release under the American Recordings banner. Amazing how he proves the power of a man with nothing but a guitar, his voice and a country song – so simple yet powerful, and confessional. 🖤🎶 Highlights include ‘Like A Soldier’, ‘The Beast In Me’, ‘Delia’s Gone’, ‘Tennessee Stud’, ‘Bird On A Wire’, ‘Why Me Lord’, ‘Down By the Train’….in fact, there’s not a dud to be found. Cash has covered so much territory in the vast and sub genres of country music over the years. It’s too difficult to narrow down his best because there’s simply so much gold and anything he released. American Recordings by Johnny Cash turned 30 yesterday. Produced by Rick Rubin, it was a back-to-the-basics approach … just Cash and his guitar with songs that were penned by him, along with Nick Lowe, Danzig, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and others. After a series of tepid albums on the Mercury label, Rubin saw past that and the “greatest hits” slog that his live shows had become. He gave John total creative control and with that, at age 62, Cash was suddenly cool again. I firmly believe that without this and American II & III, we wouldn’t think of Cash as the legend he’s become. Would he still be great? Lastly on this day back in the year 1994, once again the Classic Country Singer Johnny Cash released his 81st album "American Recordings". which turned out to be another one of his signature (Silver) albums and of course it's filled with some of the most interesting songs. The album consists of the following 3 singles: "Delia's Gone" (same year as the album) & of course "Drive On" (also same year). It also consists of some covers of songs that were originally recorded by other artists including "Why Me Lord" (by Kris Kristofferson), "Bird on a Wire" (by Judy Collins), "Tennessee Stud" (by Jimmie Driftwood) & "The Man Who Wouldn't Cry" (by Loudon Wainwright III), they were covered well by Cash I have to say. This album is for sure another very enjoyable one and it goes according to my taste in Country Music. I love both the album and the singer Johnny Cash, he's got several classics and I really do enjoy listening to his stuff very much. Another one of the best in Music. 30 years ago today, former Highwaymen member @JohnnyCash released his 48th album American Recordings under the label with the same name. Produced by @RickRubin, the album was recorded in Cash’s living room accompanied only by his guitar. For years Cash had often been at odds with his producers after he had discovered with his 1st producer Sam Phillips that his voice was better suited to a stripped-down musical style. Most famously he disagreed with Jack Clement over his sound, Clement having tried to give Cash’s songs a “twangy” feel & to add strings & barbershop-quartet-style singers. On the other hand, his successful collaboration with Rick Rubin was in part due to Rubin seeking a minimalist sound for his songs. 3️⃣0️⃣ this week. Celebrating the anniversary of this beast a couple of days early because today is my late Dad’s birthday and that means only one man on the turntable. Cash was his favourite artist and this was the album that made the man in black one of mine too. Right on queue my son just walked in and said “I like this, what is it?” It speaks to an inter generational shared darkness it would seem! Definitely one of the records - along with the other American Recordings and Springsteen’s Nebraska - that Dad and I bonded over. In particular this incredible song, which Nick Lowe penned specifically for his then father-in law. A hard relate. Serendipitously, the Cash estate are announcing something new today so it will be interesting to see exactly what that is. Hope you’re listening somewhere, old boy. Johnny Cash - The American Recordings series (Americana/Country) [1994-2010] _____________ Starting as a fresh face reigniting the rockabilly/country scenes in the late 50’s, Johnny Cash was a star until the 60’s where he became lost in the shuffle of the music industry. At Folsom Prison reignited his stardom, being seen as the first true Outlaw Country record and he was on a hot streak once again until the 80’s where many stars lost favor with their labels and audiences. Pretty much nobody wanted anything to do with him until a young producer by the name of Rick Rubin approached him to make some recordings for his Def Jam label. Rubin saw Johnny was trying to do too much with his music, he challenged Cash by recording at Rick’s apartment and at Johnny’s ranch with not much more than Cash’s acoustic guitar, a microphone and the occasional piano. What came out of it is the greatest series of albums Country music has to offer. Johnny found his voice again both literally and figuratively, leaning into his unique vocal and he started writing some of his most starkly emotive work. Many of the songs throughout the series are thoughtfully chosen covers, running the gamut from artists like Tom Petty and Simon and Garfunkel to daring choices like Danzig and Nine Inch Nails. It showed that Johnny was still listening to new music and grasping inspiration from all around. These albums show an artist ruminating on mortality and how fragile life can be in a fickle world, referencing his Christian beliefs heavily while still retaining the grit and charm of his early work. Cash died shortly before the release of IV which would go on to be his biggest record and it’s poetically fitting with his life struggles. These are all various reissues from the years which sound great and have fantastic sleeves with background info, these should be in every collection country fan or not.
