Just how important is sleep and WHEN you SLEEP? 😴 I’m currently reading a book on circadian rhythms and learning just how important our rhythms are. How just 1 HOUR off your normal schedule can have lasting cognitive effects the next day. And when you compound multiple nights of habitual late sleeping it can compound negative effects and diseases in your body. Not just how deep you sleep but WHEN you sleep is key. Plenty of studies have now shown the effects of sleep deprivation & night shift disruptions. Your body will become inflamed and not be able to heal properly at night. An interesting study showed that taking a large group of NIGHT-OWL people out of their familiar environment, and into the woods with no technology, allowed 95% of these people to reset a healthy circadian rhythm. These people classified in the range of sleepers that fell asleep from midnight-5am. After just a week with no technology or access to bright blue light at night. They were able to naturally shift their bedtimes to 9-10pm. Waking naturally with sunrise at 6am or so. So. If you consider yourself with “insomnia” or poor sleep. You should consider how your habits are effecting your health. Basically, estrogen (along with progesterone) helps you to have a normal reproductive cycle. Menopause decreases your estrogen levels as the supply of mature eggs in your ovaries diminishes and you begin to produce less and less estrogen. This loss of ovarian estrogen results in the commonly seen and discussed menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. ⁠ ⁠ The loss of estrogen doesn’t affect only your reproductive system. Premenopausal women have a much lower incidence of cardiovascular disease than men, as estrogen plays a protective role. Estrogen lowers your bad cholesterol (HDL) and increases your good cholesterol (LDL) which protects you against blockage in your arteries. However, this benefit is lost once you hit menopause and studies have shown a dramatic increase in atherosclerosis (a thickening or hardening of arteries caused by a buildup of plaque in an artery’s inner lining) in postmenopausal women.
