Sie bildet ein weitreichendes Wurzelwerk und breitet sich schnell aus. Die Blätter sind dreiteilig gefiedert und haben eine hellgrüne Farbe. Die Blüten des Gierschs sind weiß und stehen in Dolden zusammen. In der Volksmedizin wird der Giersch als harntreibendes Mittel und zur Behandlung von Gicht und Rheuma eingesetzt. Die jungen Blätter, Triebe und Knospen des Gewöhnlichen Gierschs sind essbar und können roh in Salaten oder als Gemüse in gekochten Gerichten genossen werden. Sie haben einen angenehm würzigen Geschmack. Eine Ernte im Frühling und Frühsommer, bevor die Pflanze blüht, ist zu bevorzugen. Es sind keine giftigen Teile bekannt, und der Verzehr in moderaten Mengen ist unbedenklich. Il finocchio è molto noto per le sue proprietà digestive. Contiene, infatti, oli essenziali, come l’anetolo, che stimolano la produzione di enzimi digestivi ed aiutano a ridurre il gonfiore addominale e la flatulenza. Questo ortaggio contiene, inoltre, alcuni fitonutrienti e composti antinfiammatori, come gli antiossidanti e i flavonoidi, che sono in grado di migliorare la salute e di ridurre il rischio di malattie croniche. L’aroma del finocchio, infine, presenta proprietà rilassanti, che possono aiutare a ridurre i livelli di ansia e di stress, responsabili, spesso, dell’insonnia. Quello che non sapevi: nel finocchio gli antichi vedevano un principio attivo di forza, ma anche di fertilità ed addirittura di sensuale sfrenatezza e sregolatezza. Nella sua ‘Storia naturale’, Plinio esalta il potere afrodisiaco del finocchio, assunto attraverso vari infusi concentrati. Questa idea di forza è legata al fatto che il fiore giallo e profumato della pianta di finocchio fosse sacro ad Adone, figlio ed amante di Venere. Sweet Cicely - Osmorhiza claytonii - is a native wildflower of Apiaceae, the carrot family. Found in woods and wooded slopes, particularly moist woods, throughout eastern North America. April 26, 2024 at Monte Sano Landtrust Preserve, Huntsville, Alabama. Flowers are in flat clusters (umbels), in groups (umbellets) of 4 to 7 flowers each, at the top of the plant and the ends of branching stems. Individual flowers are about 1/8 inch across. Surfaces are hairy, especially along the veins on the underside. Stems and stalks, except the umbellet stalks, are densely covered in long, spreading white hairs. Sweet Cicely and Aniseroot or Sweet Anise - Osmorhiza longistylis (also found locally) are very similar and easily confused. Aniseroot has more flowers per umbellet (8 to 16), styles longer than the petals, has short-hairy or hairless stems, the leaves are less deeply divided, and the foliage has an anise fragrance when crushed. The hairiness of the stems is usually the most noticeable difference and what I usually go by, as it is often pretty easy to see. Also Clayton's Sweetroot, Hairy Sweet-Cicely, Woolly Sweet-Cicely, Sweet Jarvil, and Bland Sweet-Cicely. This species gets its specific epithet from John Clayton (1694-1773). Clayton, who came to America from England as a child, was one of the earliest plant collectors in Virginia. His specimens were used by European botanists, including Linnaeus. Roots have been cooked and eaten as a vegetable, as have leaf stalks. My local invasive Heracleum mantegazzianum - jätteloka/giant hogweed is back for a third year. Someone seems to cut it down every year, but no one’s dug up the root so it just keeps coming back. At least it doesn’t get a chance to flower and reproduce. I’d do it myself if I had a hazmat suit and a good shovel. But alas. Nightfall, nakhankam (Sium suave). A long term resident of our pond, nakhankam’s an edible umbellifer, with tuberous roots, usually known as water parsnip. I call it swamp skirret as it’s closely related to that crop (S. sisarum) and tastes similar, but grows in much wetter conditions. After the winter and spring we’ve had, that could be useful. Die Pflanze hat einen dünnen Stängel, der oft rötlich gefärbt ist und leicht behaart sein kann. Die Blätter des echten Kerbels sind fein gefiedert und erinnern an die Blätter von Petersilie, sind jedoch weicher und zarter. Die Blüten des Kerbels sind klein und weiß und erscheinen von April bis August. It blooms in late spring with white flowers. The structure of its inflorescence is typical-classic for its family. Sometimes there is a group of degenerate black flowers in the center of the umbel, looking like an insect to the eyes of pollinating insects, and the insects see as if there is already another insect on the flowers, a sign that they should also come. Essentially a carrot that got trapped on Madeira many eons ago and turned into a giant, perennial version over time. Looks like I might have thought about this combo (I didn’t!) but I like the flamboyant lost-label astrantia against the miniature lilac Palibin (love the neat, fresh foliage on the lilac too). Nachdem die letzten Tage sommerlich warm waren, kippte die Temperatur heute ganz aprilgerecht wieder nach unten, bestes Wetter für einen wärmenden würzigen Doldenblütlerbrei! Kartoffeln und Knollensellerie (Doldenblütler Nummer 1) bildeten die Basis, Blätter vom Wiesenbärenklau und Giersch (Doldenblütler Nummer 2 und 3) gaben noch mehr Geschmack dazu. Lo prometido es deuda, ¡aquí tenéis la flor de la zanahoria! Es muy típica verla junto a la "mala" hierba que tapiza los terrenos sin construir de las ciudades o los senderes de los caminos. Cuando la veáis por los caminos fijaros bien en la flor: está compuesta por otras flores más pequeñas, a esto se le llama inflorescencia, ¡las margaritas son iguales!
