Joe Matera is returning to the Shepparton Library on Thursday 9th May at 7.00pm to launch his new book Louder than Words. Joe will once again be bringing his guitar along so those attending can enjoy a live music performance. Joe holds a unique position as a music journalist who is also a professional musician. This insight has allowed him to carve out a career as both a performer and a critic. It has also allowed him access to areas where music journos are not permitted, while musicians themselves open up more readily to ‘one of their own’. In this, his second book, Joe traces his childhood influences and meets the musicians who changed his life, from heroes such as Janne Schaffer, who played on ABBA’s studio albums, to Gerry Rafferty (the genius behind ‘Baker Street’) and international superstar Bryan Adams and his song writing partner Jim Vallance. Louder Than Words also delves into the often-tortuous touring life of a musician, with life on the road frequently leading to band break-ups or mental breakdown. Joe also examines the impact of MTV on a generation of musicians, focusing particularly on one video by rising rock star Billy Squier that is said to have ruined his career. In addition to his solo music career as a singer/songwriter/guitarist, Joe also has a career as a music journalist, writing for international music magazines such as Guitar Player, Guitar World, Record Collector, and Goldmine. He also writes a popular newspaper music column for the Shepparton News. His list of interviewees includes Metallica, Queen, Blondie, Bon Jovi, KISS and Black Sabbath, to name just a few. Formed in 2021, it saw the duo rope in some of Australia’s finest roots musos to reinterpret some of The Whitlams’ most loved songs (No Aphrodisiac, Louis Burdett, Pokies), and a small handful of songs from their recent album Sancho in a country style. Everywhere Troy Cassar-Daley goes, his Daphne turns heads. On the wet streets near his home in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs. Across the span of the Gateway Bridge, dodging semi-trailers and toolbox-laden utes. Idling at red lights beside newer, flashier models – and especially when parked inside Tino’s Classic Car Garage. Sitting pretty under cover, Daphne’s unexpected appearance at this shed in Brendale, 20km north of the Queensland capital, prompts a random bloke to run in from the pouring rain, all but elbowing aside the famous musician stood beside her so as to better eyeball every centimetre of her beautiful body. Grown men regress into teenage boys at the sight of her because Daphne is a 1964 EH Holden, and there’s something about her retro look that gets the blood pumping to all male extremities in an age where automobiles are becoming quieter, less obtrusive and more fuel-efficient. Daphne – named for a shade of blue in the colour scheme of guitar manufacturer Fender – is none of those things. That’s part of her pure vintage charm. You simply can’t miss her, and that’s a commonality she shares with her owner – because if you’re at all familiar with, and conversant in, Australian country music across the past 30 years, you simply can’t miss Troy Cassar-Daley. He’s a singer-songwriter who tucked a guitar under his arm as a boy, began amassing a swag of songs, and eventually worked his way through a tight scrum of artists to stand taller than them all, alone holding 40 Golden Guitar Awards, two more than both Slim Dusty and Lee Kernaghan. He’s also a car guy, through and through; not only fond of driving them, but of getting his hands dirty with the inner workings, too. No sooner had he acquired his first sedan at age 18 than an uncle was on hand, rolling up his sleeves, ready to impart life-shaping know-how. Do you remember WA’s first national record label? 🎶 Back in 1962, WA music industry pioneer Martin Clarke launched Clarion Records, changing the face of WA’s recording industry. Focused on local acts, Clarion brought us releases from The Valentines with a young Bon Scott before he found fame with AC/DC, Johnny Young, Robbie Snowden, The Birds and more. Clarke used a lathe – which converts an audio signal into grooves on an acetate blank with an embossing stylus – to produce master discs which he used as templates to produce records on a commercial scale. Lathes and acetates from this period are rare and highly sought after, but an incredible collection of a Presto 6N lathe and acetate blanks used by Clarion Records calls the WA Museum home.
