Placement. It has been a week of wondering where everything could and should go. We have scored more raised garden beds. I played with their placement so that they are easy on the eye from the kitchen sink (much time being spent here washing dishes 😅) and from the driveway entrance. These raised beds are going on the northside of the property in Zone 1 (which is permaculture design talk 😉) We need to build up our stash of cardboard and we’re going with the hugelkultur method again for these beds. It is a way for us to collect and layer what is lying around on the property. We are also working on where the chook coop and run could also go. There is much to do this week to make sure our feathers friends will be safe from the neighbourhood foxes 🦊 (keep posted!) But today’s photo is an experiment of where a small brazier/firepit could go. Somewhere a little sheltered from the wind to go on winter nights. The only way to do any of this design work is to be outside, observing, observing and observing. Watching, listening and closing your eyes to vision and dream 🥰

Love doing exercise? Me neither. During Part1 Of My Love Life I didn’t do any. . Then I decided if I was serious about having a Part 2 Of My Love Life, exercise definitely had a place in my life. . Mentally it helps me feel good about myself in that I’m taking positive action about keeping myself at a healthy size and weight physically. I don’t want to keep outgrowing my clothes as it’s expensive to keep buying new ones! . Some increase is natural of course: I’m 58 not 25. But I want to keep it (and me) in proportion. . To make exercise more palatable I use Apple AirPods and listen to audiobooks that help motivate me by featuring a woman and her story I can want to emulate. . My current listen, ‘The Making of a Marchioness’ by Frances Hodgson Burnet (she of children's favourite ‘The Secret Garden’) is keeping me enthralled. . It’s 1901 and thirty-something Emily Fox-Seton who lives alone, humbly and happily, on a meagre income, by her sheer niceness attracts an older man who is a member of the aristocracy and becomes his wife. She’s lovely but has a lot to learn! . Think of Edith Wharton’s ‘The Bucaneers’ without the knowingness and gold-digging calculation. . Envisaging the beautiful English country surroundings, her personal maid, the silk gowns and equipages which surround her, motivates me on a material level, as well as reminding me to be kind. Morning walk, listening to birds, bees and podcasts. If you had said to me that I would be walking first thing before my morning coffee in bed, I would have said this ‘Bah ha ha, never!’ Changing up things, because different things are increasingly becoming more important to me. 🚶🏾♀️
It was a cool breezy morning, I had to grab a cardigan for a morning walk. Autumn feels like it is on the way and the fruit trees are changing in colour. 🍂 Our first cucumbers harvested and ready for the Mister to do his pickling again into Mason jars. All the snowpea seedlings have fried but the rosemary cuttings from the Rainbow Coast Neighbourhood Centre (RCNC) Community Garden @poetryandcompost look like they have sucessfully taken which is exciting! 💚 Will need to think about where these will eventually go. I know the bees will love these. Scrumptious peaches and plums to be savoured from the Sheed properties @winsheed @taniasheed and bright flowers to catch the eye from the kitchen sink. We need to find more preloved, recycled raised beds so we can make room for the veggies that can come with the change of season.
It is always nice to see what has changed in the veggie patch when you have been away a while. What is growing here? 🌱 Well we have experimented with some new plants - purple okra, capsicum, ginger, lemongrass, camomile, curry leaf and dahlias but there are others that we have grown before like spinach, red onions, mizuna, beans, tomatoes, chard, cale, eggplant, cucumbers, lettuces (our cow escaped again and ate these!), carrots, chillis, and herbs like sage, parsley, mint, rocket, basils, marigolds and calendula. The Mister bought tiny fig trees, purple star anise and Tasmanian mountain pepper at Blossums nursery - our local nursery which is sadly closing their business. We have been gifted a Fowler Vacola jar of peaches and have dried gifted peaches and plums. 🍑 We have purchased a pump! One that will refill the garden tank from the paddock dam next time it dries up (and once we get all the necessary fixtures of course) Anyway, it has been nice to come home to the sprinkle of rain and a touch of green.
