One little guy raised his hand when I finished reading and said, “one million likes!” And then the others followed by telling me how many likes they give the book. It was so sweet. One young girl had made me a picture and gave it to me when she saw me. Some of the second graders really took to the book and shared with me ways they planned to go home and help around the house or to clean and organize their rooms without anyone telling them to do it. We talked about how being responsible is doing what you’re supposed to do or taking care of what you have without being told. They had many ideas and were inspired. It was awesome! I had the blessing of reading to the kindergarten through fourth grade classes at Barnesville Elementary School in Barnesville, Ohio today!! These students poured out SO much love and I was truly overwhelmed! They had made posters welcoming me and many created their own books and drawings to gift to me! I was almost brought to tears seeing the impact. The signs and books were so inspiring. They read that they loved my books, I was the best author in the whole world, I was a great role model, I was an inspiration, I was so creative, etc. The power of words. I was truly touched. It’s days like today that makes me realize how blessed I really am to be doing what I’m doing and seeing the tangible impact. I never take a second of it for granted. I am humbled, honored, and deeply moved by all of it. One teacher thanked me because she said her daughter is a big fan. She said her daughter loves to write and create but she said I have impacted her. Her daughter has the gift but never believed in herself and now she does. 😭❤️ The school gifted me with a large tote bag filled to the brim with snacks and goodies and a thank you card with a gift card to help me with my travels! The tote said “my weekend is all booked!” So very thoughtful of them and I’m more than appreciative. Truly at a loss for words from today. ❤️ Barnesville, thank you, for your loving kindness! Thank you, Principal Abbott, and teachers for having me. Maddie, a writer from London will be able to write a brilliant book about our miraculous escape (and it will be a miracle), but that’s pointless if we never make it out. Then there’s Cat, a secret civil servant who’s probably my best hope as she’s very bright and has a gift for languages. Although maybe I’m underestimating Lois. She’s up for some pretty near-the-knuckle stuff. . . Fortunately, Layla has friends with skills in the required areas. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Aidan (trapped in the aforementioned lair), is showing a right lot of inclination to be rescued. Boys, huh? *eyeroll* . . In other news (and don’t fall off your chair), I’ve actually done some writing this week. Book three is rapidly (ahem) approaching 40,000 words, and I’m finally feeling like all the stands are coming together. There’s still a long way to go, but progress is progress. . . ✏ author's scoop: procrastination paralyzation That's a thing, right? Where you feel so overwhelmed by everything you need to do, you just do nothing? 😬 I feel like if I'm under a tight deadline, it gets done, but when I'm trying to be proactive and organized and ahead of the game, sometimes I just reach a flatline. I start debating what needs to be done right this second, or what I can put off, or if I should put it off, or if I should just push through and get it done, and sometimes I feel guilty for choosing less presser things over spending time with my kids, ugh... And then I just end up not doing any of it. But, I've been playing catch up this past week, and loving the feeling of actually getting room to breathe, to feel like the house is in (better) order, the kids' schedules are planned (kind of), my book goals are on track (mainly), and we have time to just relax and have a little fun (for just a hot minute)... While I was on my cleaning and reorganizing adventure the other day, I found these two little ones that had fallen behind a row of books. I loved Caddie Woodlawn when I was a girl. ✏️ author's scoop: perfectly imperfect I had the pleasure of doing a podcast swap with the awesome Kendahl Yanez for her Mama You're Doing Great Podcast - and oof, the mom guilt is real. I love her podcast as it dives head first into all the sticky situations and harsh criticisms we tell ourselves about this motherhood journey. Comparison. Guilt. Frustration. Inadequacy. Mistakes. More mistakes. But, what a freeing feeling knowing that we are the perfectly imperfect parent for our kids. And that we are definitely not alone in beating ourselves up over it all. After seeing where JK Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter books in Edinburgh, and sitting at the desk where she wrote. ✏️ author's scoop: mom guilt Last week I watched my girl Buffy casually jump the fence day after day to get the irresistible clovers on the other side. Her three week old calf Reba would watch and wait patiently until she returned. Buff came back with a happy belly. Reba remained calm within sight and sounds of mama. All was good. But, if you're wondering if Buff felt an ounce of guilt for doing what she wanted to do, the answer is an unequivocabile: no! So why as human moms do we put so much pressure on ourselves to do all the things, all the time?? My husband and I took an unplanned rest day last weekend and binged I Am A Killer on Netflix...But while I started to feel guilt creep in, I reminded myself: ☀️ we relished in a busy & productive week we all had 🎨 my kids happily used the down time to play & relax 🎟 we enjoyed a family movie theater night upstairs with snacks & pizza 🔧 we played a family game of Clue - one of our favorites! And when you look at it like that, maybe a rest day is just what we all needed. But, why does it leave me feeling like more should have been "done"?! What kind of examples am I setting for myself and my kids if simply slowing down and enjoying ourselves isn't "enough"?! This afternoon was so special! I read ‘Ambitious Abbey Takes the Lead’ to the kindergarten through third grade students at Stadium Drive Elementary School in Boardman, OH in a general assembly and discussed leadership with the students. We discussed how to lead by helping others. They were so well behaved and a captive audience with great questions. This was one of my largest readings and the kids made it easy. I was reunited with a former classmate. I am giving her a hug in one of the pictures. It had been 21 years since we’d last seen each other in person. Her boys attend the school and she’s actively involved in PTA. Thank you, Carrie Thomas, for coordinating and bringing me into the school. It was such a blessing!!
