Winnie Dunn stopped by to sign copies of her wonderful debut novel, "Dirt Poor Islanders", a potent, mesmerising novel that opens our eyes to the brutal fractures navigated when growing up between two cultures and the importance of understanding all the many pieces of yourself. Meadow Reed used to get confused when explaining that she had grandparents from Australia, Tonga and Great Britain. She'd say she was full-White and full-Tongan, thinking that so many halves made separate wholes. Despite the Anglo-Saxon genetics that gave Meadow a narrow nose and light-brown skin, everybody who raised her was Tongan. Everybody who loved her was Tongan. This was what made her Tongan. Growing up in the heat-hummed streets of Mt Druitt in Western Sydney, Meadow will face palangis who think they are better than Fobs, women who fall into other women, what it means to have many mothers, a playful rain and even Pineapple Fanta. For this half-White, half-Tongan girl, the world is bigger than the togetherness she has grown up in. Finding her way means pushing against the constraints of tradition, family and self until she becomes whole in her own right. It was a pleasure to give two keynotes to physical therapy students at the University of Hartford yesterday! This was my first time speaking at a university/college since the book release, and it was an opportunity that emerged from a professor who heard about the book and my public speaking and reached out via my website. Knowing I was speaking to college students who are heading into finals crunch time, I pulled out all the stops—readings from the memoir about my childhood PT experiences, stories about the insurance battle for my wheelchair and the incredible fundraiser by Fairfield University Department of Public Safety and alumni, the pneumonia recovery and returning to the sport of running as a stronger athlete despite being told I’d never walk and run again, my awesome Achilles and Gaylord ParaTriathlon team experiences, my school cross country and track team experiences, my rock climbing experience, and a demo of the standing feature and headlights on my chair. As I explained to the students, I value audience participation rather than “talking at” the group—I myself learn better when I’m actively engaged when attending presentations, so I gave frequent discussion questions and surprised them with some humor and topic-related, comedic memes at various points. I’d hoped we would have a riveting discussion but never anticipated the level of engagement we had. I’m so thrilled to have been able to discuss effective approaches to PT and to already be invited back to do future sessions. As I hope to teach at the college level in the not-so-distant future, this was a phenomenal and rewarding opportunity. After my last session at Carlisle Primary School yesterday, a boy shyly came up to me and said, ‘Um, Josh, I just want to thank you for inspiring me today. I want to become an author like you. I really want to be an author now. Thank you. Bye.’ And off he went. I hope he becomes a rich author! It was the first time a school had booked me to do sessions for all year groups, PLUS a parent talk. The turn out for the parent talk was fantastic, with lots of parents finding out what will help their kids to be emotionally and mentally resilient and so they can get less stressed and anxious. Lowell was thrilled to host special guest and award-winning author @kylelukoffwrites as part of Friday’s Social Justice Day activities. Each division enjoyed a reading from one of his many published books and had a chance to ask questions about his career and approach to writing for a wide range of ages. In the Primary School, students considered the motivations of the main character in “When Aidan Became a Brother.” With middle schoolers, Kyle shared “Too Bright to See” and discussed the importance of thoughtful world-building so that readers can feel they belong or understand the space they’re occupying. Pre-Primary students learned about the structure of “Awake, Asleep” and followed the model of the story to find one-syllable or “one-clap” words describing a day at school. Lastly, Kyle stopped by a Rainbow Club meeting at lunch to hear about the group’s ongoing projects. World Book Day at LCIS📚 This year, we celebrated World Book Day with @ruth.eastham who visited our school to meet our Upper Primary and Lower Secondary students. It was a fantastic occasion for our Primary students to meet and bond with their older friends they’ll soon join in Secondary School. Ruth took our students on a journey of how she finds inspiration for her writing with some thought provoking links to history, mythology and quantum mechanics Her message of ‘love what you do, and do what you love’ resonated with our students and as each year group took part in a workshop session with Ruth, they were able to explore their own creativity and imagination. We had the pleasure of hosting Holden educator and author Andrew Hacket at Venerini Academy! Mr. Hacket led captivating workshops, sharing his journey to becoming a published author. He discussed the writing and revision process, offering insights into his timeline from start to finish. Our fourth graders learned about character development, while our first graders explored the creation of fairy tales. A large part of the writing journey includes sharing the my story through author visits. I love writing, but my visits at schools, libraries and book stores are what make it so worth while. It's the time where I can make the A Big Blue Boat story come to life for my audiences. Children and adults alike are introduced not only to boats and sailing, but the wider world out there. Different cultures, extinction, the saving of species, weather and more are just some of the topic areas introduced. This October will find me visiting schools and libraries in the Yass and Barooga regions. Shepparton, Yarrawonga and Canberra are just three of the townships I'll be. Only 4 spots are left. 'Susea used to be a teacher and it shows. Her presentation was engaging from the start. She spoke to each child like they were the only one there and varied her information and her questions to suit the audience. There was a really effective blend of presentation styles –lecture-style (where Susea talked about the different parts of a boat), questions to the audience, personal anecdotes, singing, interactive components and a story reading. Susea also incorporated large visuals, including enlarged pictures from the book so everyone could see. What impressed me the most was Susea’s ability to tailor her presentation to the interests of the audience and to keep them fully engaged for a full 40 minutes – even the youngest listeners. There was something for everyone in Susea’s presentation – from the youngest children (pre-primary) through to Year 6, and adults. I have attended many book launches, workshops and readings by children’s authors over the years, and have to say that Susea Spray’s presentation ranks right up the top.' I still have perma-grin from my visits to Sebastian Middle School and Gamble Rogers Middle School in St. Augustine last Friday. I made so many new friends! 🤩 Both schools completed novel studies on TREASURE TRACKS as part of the SSYRA program and led incredible cross-curriculum activities inspired by the novel, including the study and creation of mini-hurricanes, key lime pies, and the design and production of an entire 3D-printed game. (Check out the 3D printed pieces in the photos— even the helicopter from one of the scenes, a pirate, a manatee, and Ratón, the family pet. 🐕 Incredible!!! STEAM learning at its best!) I was so touched to be received with so much enthusiasm and honored the novel could inspire such incredible learning opportunities and creativity at the classroom level.
