𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘆𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝘂𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲 🗺️ Coal River Valley, Tasmania 🇦🇺 Tasmania’s Coal River wine region follows the course of the Coal River, from the hills just north of Hobart to the coast, taking in the wide, north to south oriented river valley. Characterised by a lush, fertile area of rivers and farmland, the role of viticulture is important here - not just to the local economy in terms of production, but also in terms of its tourism. A young wine region, commercial vineyards only appeared from the 1970s, with a progressive but not exclusive focus on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. 🍇 Most vines are planted on the slopes facing northeast, where they benefit from the region’s long sunlight hours. The cool breeze from the Tasman Sea to the south plays an important role in extending the growing season, and equally, ensuring its white wines are crisp and taut, while its reds are vibrant, developed and fresh. 🍷 Vineyards are planted in ancient alluvial and sandy soils with a high concentration of clay sandstone. 🌱 This friable soil is often aided along the slope to give adequate drainage for the grapes, but the clay helps store enough water that irrigation is rarely required. Fruit for Domaine A’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the historic Stoney Vineyard, the region’s oldest and longest operating. Established in 1973, Domaine A has its winemaking duties headed by Conor van der Reest - though I believe the 2016 may have been made by Peter Althaus, who sadly passed in 2021. The nose displays lifted notes of violets 🌺, blackcurrants and ripe dark berries, cedar, tobacco, savoury spices and dried herbs 🪴. Earthy and generous, the palate has cassis and blackberries, with some red berries in there too. Black olives 🫒 and a breath of eucalyptus provide a beautiful depth of flavour to the mid palate and finish, framed by smooth, well integrated tannin. Poised and drinking beautifully, this is a special wine and containing 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it reminds me of the many beautiful Bordeaux inspired blends I’ve enjoyed from Tasmania these past few years. Well worth the wait.

We’re just waiting for the weather to fine up so we can get on and pick our Cabernet Sauvignon. We keep a close eye on this block out of the kitchen window and with the warm, dry summer that we’ve had, we are expecting a ripe crop full of flavour. In 2021 we started our journey planting our vineyard in upper Coal River Valley. We’ve worked with passion and dedication on this beautiful land, enjoying the amazing sunsets and early mornings working in the vineyards. These last few weeks were a milestone!
