I snagged this really awesome foreign Elektra/Twen Records compilation at an antique store a few weeks back. The picture disc looks great and it was originally released in 1969! This may be one of the earlier rock picture discs out there. A new arrival to the hoard is this, the second album from Earth Opera. It's a pretty solid affair, with a pretty notable country flavor throughout ("Home To You" and "Sanctuary From The Law" are most obvious). The big piece here for me is the title track, a ten minute long tune dealing with the Vietnam War and its problems. It's the song to pick to listen to. Earth Opera – Earth Opera - Elektra - 1968 (LP & 8-Track). . . San Francisco was generally considered to be the center of psychedelic music back in the 60s, but honestly, Boston had a seemingly equal number of bands and in my opinion, a much better sound. Journalists coined the term Bosstown Sound and these guys were a part of it. I don’t think you could pick a more stereotypical hippie name if you tried 😜 Much like a lot of the Elektra bands, these guys were definitely a cut above lot of other bands. The album opener has the fake crowd chant of “kill the hippies,” which is pretty hilarious. Check out To Care At all and Home Of The Brave. Two of these guys went on to become renowned bluegrass musicians despite there being little to allude to that on this record. Earth Opera - Earth Opera (1968, Elektra). Digging into the psychedelic stack tonight. This is a pretty good one. It’s pretty clear to hear that they mostly came from a folk background, and weren’t really psych rockers. It has a very folky, singer songwriter feel to it, but definitely has some psychedelic production values, and themes. It sits really nicely next to other bands on the Elektra label at the time (The Doors, Love, etc.), but probably isn’t as good as any that you’ve heard of. Saying that, I’m on my third spin of it tonight, and it’s going down really well. The first track: The Red Sox Are Winning really makes you think this is going to be a full blown concept album, but I don’t think it ever really gets there. The highlight for me is near the end with: Time And Again. They only did two albums, so I may try and track down the other one. Happy big eight-oh to Peter Rowan, born on this day in 1942!! 🎂 🎸 🤠 @peterrowanmusic has made great music playing great guitar and mandolin in many different genres and situations for over 60 years. His early interests included blues, rockabilly, and folk, but soon caught the bluegrass bug. He played with #billmonroe in #monroesbluegrassboys from 1964-67, then formed #earthopera with @daviddawggrisman Other bands in the late 60s/early 70s included #seatrain and #muleskinner He wrote songs for @nrpsarchive and formed #oldandintheway with Grisman and @jerrygarcia He continued recording and performing with all sorts of different people and still records and tours today. Here’s a great Bob Driscoll poster from April, 1968. The Boston Tea Party was Boston’s Fillmore Auditorium and Avalon Ballroom rolled up into one. While enthusiastically supportive, the East Coast intellectuals were a different brand of hippie than their free-flowing cousins out West. So it was with their poster designs. Manager Steve Nelson knew he couldn’t compete with the San Francisco School of artists and so he and designer Bob Driscoll went in the opposite direction with minimalist and usually black and white designs. The Boston Tea Party posters were printed in small quantities and this is a rare oversized piece from that era. The Yardbirds spent much of 1967 and 1968 touring in the US with new manager Peter Grant (later Led Zeppelin’s manager), with their live shows becoming heavier and more experimental including “Dazed and Confused,” written by American folk singer Jake Holmes, and which later became a staple of Led Zeppelin live shows. The Steve Miller Band was on tour following the release of their first album, Children of The Future, in February 1968. Earth Opera was a Boston-based psychedelic folk band featuring Peter Rowan and David Grisman, both well-known local bluegrass virtuosos. In 1969 Grisman moved to San Francisco, met Jerry Garcia, and appeared on the Grateful Dead album American Beauty and later played in Garcia's bluegrass band Old & In the Way with John Kahn, Peter Rowan and Vassar Clements. CD時代は調べてないから知らないがかつて自分が切望していたLP盤はその頃とっくに廃盤になって見つけても高すぎて手に入れられなかったジョンハートフォードの初期のアルバムなんかもあっさり聴けてしまうのはものすごいことやなと思いながらあれこれ愉しんでることは愉しんでます。 ジョンクゥエスキンジャグバンドのガーデンオブジョイとかアースオペラのグレートアメリカンイーグルトラジェディとか貴重なものを廃盤屋さんでようやく見つけて当時何日分かのアルバイト代をはたいて買ったことや廃盤が決まったクウィンテット80とかステファングラッペリとディヴィッドグリスマンのライブ盤だけは万一擦り減ったり傷付けたりして聴けなくなると取り返しがつかないからと思って一生分のつもりで数枚づつ買ったことになんの後悔もないがそのあとCDの時代になって再販されたりこうしてサブスクで聴けたりするとはその時思いもよらなかったわけでまあよい時代になったもんだと思ってます。 ブルーベルベットバンドは確かCD化したような気がするがいつか見つけたい。 陶器屋さんになってもはや擦り減るほどはレコード聴かない人生になることも知らんかったし(^^; それはそうと2A3の真空管アンプがたまらなく欲しいが電流とか電圧とかダイオードとか整流管とかトランスとかコンデンサとかまるでわかってないとはんだくらいは出来る気はするけれどアンプキットとか組むのはたぶん感電したり爆発したそうで絶対無理っぽくて無念すぎるが完成品を買ったら使うくらいは使えるのかどうかもいまいち謎。 電気やメカに弱すぎるやろ(｡-_-｡) #JohnHartford #JimKweskinJugBand #EarthOpera #DavidGrisman #StephaneGrappelli #BlueVelvetBand #naommusic

Earth Opera - Self-titled (1968). Debut of two albums from the American psychedelic rock group. Both albums were released on Elektra Records and the band had a slight resemblance in sound to label mates The Doors, with sometimes trippy, keyboard-driven psych. Some songs lean into pop and folk, but overall everything has a great psych feel to it.
