I came across this nice 7x6 bull elk while hiking in Yellowstone NP back in 2004. The fog was extremely heavy, and he often disappeared from view, so I'm pleased that I was able to capture a couple of nice photos before he drifted away in the fog. It was a wonderful encounter with a magnificent animal! With the potential for an early-May trip to Benezette this weekend, I was looking back on some of my favorite shots from last year. This picture was taken on New Year’s Eve Day. Shake it off 🎼 After a whirlwind of a weekend driving to Kentucky to fulfill my childhood dream of attending the Kentucky Derby, I find myself a little frazzled as my second year of university comes to a close. Another elk we saw on the roadside on Newfound Gap Road. What an incredible animal! We stayed a safe distance away and used a telephoto lens. However, there was a lady parked on the same side of the road as the elk. She was out of her vehicle within a few feet of several elk, trying to take a phone photo of one, while another was silently stalking her. Ed called out a warning just in time. Thankfully, she heard him and moved away to safety. BULL OF THE YEAR Comme nos cerfs elaphes, les grands mâles wapitis en velours se font discrets en cette saison. Très proches, les deux espèces de grands cervidés diffèrent néanmoins par leur taille, les wapitis pouvant atteindre le poids de cinq cents kilos, soit le double des cerfs européens. Around here we call these animals Sika deer, but they are actually small members of the elk family. They are an invasive species, and were introduced to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1916, when they were imported from Japan and released on James Island. They are primarily nocturnal and prefer marshy terrain.
