Not all Enneagram tests are equally helpful or accurate. I will share with you some of the ones I think are the best out there. There may be others you love- please share your favorites. The most important factors in taking an Enneagram test are your awareness and honesty. Most of us are at least a little bit blind to how we actually are, how we do life. When you take a test, challenge yourself to see how honest you can be in answering the questions. It might be easier to choose answers that represent your preferred identity or traits, such as “I love helping others,” or “I am a great leader,” or “I am very perceptive.” These may indeed be true about you, but the Enneagram is uniquely good at revealing the up-sides and the down-sides of each personality strategy. So don’t be afraid of acknowledging areas that are hard or not preferable for you. Also, because we all do have blindspots, please take any test results as a hypothesis. We like to say that the Enneagram is an “inside job.” Your sister might tell you that she knows you are a Two, you can consider it, but don’t accept it without your own investigation and study. Same thing with test results. When you get a result, rather than swallowing it whole, try it on— learn more about the type you think you are and see if you find the themes showing up frequently in your day. Sometimes discovering our core type is easy or obvious. But many of us have influences that complicate a clear finding.
