11 May 2012 Almost 52 (!) years old Blog post I am not the kind of woman who has stuffed toys on her bed, but I have a small Wild Thing on my bedside table. 'Where the Wild Thing Are' is one of my most favourite books. Even now, 40-odd years since I first heard it, it makes me cry. The illustrations are sublime – playful, colourful and intricate, the words tug at my heart, But the wild things cried, ‘Oh please don’t go–we’ll eat you up–we love you so!’ I shed a few tears on Wednesday when I heard that Maurice Sendak had passed away. What an amazing writer and illustrator he was. Apparently he was the first illustrator to devote an entire spread to a drawing, without any words what-so-ever. In the Wild Things there are three consecutive spreads that are purely visual. That would have taken guts back then, but he could get away with it, because his drawings were so magical, so beautiful and so full of meaning. I still remember the first time I heard and saw 'Where the Wild Thing Are'. Our library teacher Mr Porter read it to our class. I think I was in grade four. I loved going to the library and I really liked Mr Porter, and though he must have read other books aloud to us, this is the one that I clearly remember being entranced by. It speaks to me about the wildness of childhood (and beyond, for some of us), the power of imagination, the joy of mischief, the pain of separation and the power of homecoming. 露絲克勞斯(Ruth Krauss)、莫里斯桑達克(Maurice Sendak)合作的《歡迎蝴蝶來參觀》(Open House for Butterflies)從蝴蝶頁的孩童兩兩跳探戈，像是替作品宣示，這絕不是用來取悅大人的繪本。 從第一頁的歌頌尖叫歌，就已經看得我開始內心冒冷汗。記得前一陣子，我們一家三口假日去吃早午餐店，有兩個鄰桌男童從我們入座開始，就一直在旁邊邊玩邊尖叫，我發揮忍字訣「忍忍忍忍忍」，但時間一分一秒過去，覺得耳朵開始越來越痛，店員貌似也沒有要制止的跡象，忍功不夠的我，終究還是忍不住和男童家長說：「可不可以請他們不要再繼續尖叫了…」出了餐廳我問女兒，不覺得剛剛尖叫聲很刺耳嗎？她居然回：「不會，我們班的OOO、XXX每天都這樣尖叫啊！」頓時我覺得好像自己錯了… 裡面有所謂的一般論，時而穿插奇趣的金句，我最喜歡的其中兩句是「當寶寶可真方便啊」「有寶寶才有爸爸媽媽—不然他們就只是普通人而已」，和《洞是用來挖的》調性相同，作者鮮明的幽默感貫穿整本小書，她用文字形塑的孩子形象，小孩不是大人的附屬，都是真正的「孩子王」。桑達克的畫也配合著文字和語感，質樸無華的筆觸、單一的用色表露出他反璞歸真地童心。 #歡迎蝴蝶來參觀 #OpenHouseforButterflies #RuthKrauss #MauriceSendak #桑達克 #繪本 #絵本 #picturebook #picturebooks

Let me tell you about how this photo has literally been YEARS in the making 🙈 When I first designed my King Max corner piece 3 years ago, this was actually the full vision: an entire Where the Wild Things Are window set I sketched out a few of my favorite wild things, but I kept getting stuck on various aspects of the designs, and my whims would pull me into other projects. His real life photograph of her (bottom)as she was living with cancer but loving family tea at the table, and his illustration of her (top)as she knew “…There Must Be More To Life” in “Higglety Pigglety Pop..” When he won the Caldecott Award in ‘64 for “Where The Wild Things Are”, his comments revealed why he could tap into dogs pure psyche, the awareness of children and adults if they were lucky not to lose it: “My experience suggests that the adults who are troubled by the scariness of (Max’s) fantasy forget that my hero is having the TIME OF HIS LIFE and that he controls the situation with breezy aplomb. 「We are all in the damps with Jack and Guy」 Two Nursery Rhyme／マザーグースのふたつの話より Maurice Sendak/絵 HarperCollins 1993年 邦訳は「わたしたちもジャックもガイもみんなホームレス」で冨山房さんから出版されています。訳は神宮輝夫さん。そちらも借りて読んでみたいです。 ふたつのマザーグースの唄がカバー裏に掲載されていますがよく知らない唄です。 表紙には絵だけでタイトルがなく、え？と思ったら裏に書いてあり、意表を突く装丁。 ホームレスと言うと思い出す映画があります。タイトルも出演者も覚えていないアメリカ映画で、小さな子どものいる若い夫婦がある日住んでいるアパートの火事に遭い、全てを失くしてしまいます。当分の間(本人たちは強くそう思っている)無料の宿泊施設にお世話になりますが、そこもいつまでもいられない。仕事もなくなり、あれよあれよと言う間にホームレスになってしまうのです。 え？どうしてこうなってしまうの？と最初は思いましたが、きっとこれは現実なのだと。 この絵本にもたくさんのホームレスが登場します。「help」とだけ喋る赤ちゃんもいて、凶悪な顔のネズミに攫われるのです。ジャックとガイが助け出しに行きます。 ホームレスたちが体に巻きつけたりしている新聞紙には「銀行大儲け」「ホームレスシェルター制度」「不動産購入」「短期住宅ローン」などの広告があり皮肉が効いています。 赤ちゃんを助け出した時、片側だけ目の周りが黒かった...この話がマザーグースの中にあったとは驚きでした。アメリカの貧困、子どもの誘拐、人身売買の事をセンダック氏も早くから心を痛めていたのではないかと思います。スーパーの牛乳パックには顔写真入りで「Missing」と書かれたりしているほど、誘拐事件は多発しているそうです。行方不明の子どもたちは年間80万人とも100万人とも言われています。 この絵本では最初から空の上で見ていたお月さまが何かと救助の手を差し伸べてくれます。表紙にも登場しているこのお月さまは頼もしい。 「この赤ちゃんを真っ当に育てよう」と決心するジャックとガイも。 本からはみ出さんばかりの迫力で描かれたセンダックの絵に圧倒されます。 マザーグースにのせて 「劣悪な環境の中でどう生き延びるか」というテーマで書かれた話だそうです。 今日、5月8日はモーリス・センダック氏の命日です。素晴らしい作品群に感謝を込めて。 #weareallinthedamps withjackandguy #twonurseryrhyme #mauricesendak #harpercollins #わたしたちもジャックもガイもみんなホームレス #冨山房 #三浦文庫の本 #三浦文庫の絵本 #三浦文庫の洋書絵本 #私設図書館

On Friday May 10th, a ROCKSTAR cast of Movement Artists will be bringing Maurice Sendak’s WILD THINGS to life through movement during The Skirball Center’s “Late Night: Wild Things are Happening” event. Exhibits will be open late and there will be food trucks, live music, DJs, a dance floor, cash bar, puppets, arts activities for all ages and more! I have been working around the clock these last few weeks to create this new original work, and it happens to be my first museum commission ! While we received some funds, there are numerous expenses we are still trying to cover. Today's author for Children's Book Week is Maurice Sendak. Maurice Bernard Sendak (1928-2012) is most widely known for his book 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Sendak also illustrated many works by other authors, including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik. Born to Polish-Jewish parents, his childhood was greatly affected by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust, which is why we chose to honor him on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Yesterday was the end of my @uarizonaschoolofart letterpress class. I finished two of three panels for my Wild Things Triptych. The copy was created using a pressure print on the letterpress and the characters were printed using a riso printer. This week’s library haul is a small one since we’ll be traveling soon for a cousin’s wedding. One of the things I love most about books is their ability to teach children about experiences that they have not yet had (ride an airplane, attend a wedding) or may never have (helloooo fantasy books!) or how different kinds of characters would react in dofferent situation or under different circumstances (empathy! 😍). I’m excited about attending Detroit Opera’s upcoming production of “The Cunning Little Vixen (Příhody lišky bystroušky)” by Czech composer Leoš Janáček (1854-1928)!” The opera tells the story of a little fox cub captured by a forest ranger. She learns to live among humans and grows up to be a strong and independent vixen eventually escaping to freedom into the wild and learning about the eternal circle of life. “It’s Detroit Opera’s first presentation of “Vixen”, my second time seeing it and the nearly 100th anniversary of its premiere in 1924, at the National Theatre in Brno, Czechoslovakia. It was in Brno that I first saw the opera with my husband Charles in 2002/2003. Janáček’s opera holds a special place in Czech culture. The story of the cunning vixen began as a newspaper comic strip published in 1920. The Brno newspaper, “Lidové noviny”, took it and commissioned Rudolf Tĕsnohlídek to write the text for a series of illustrations by Stanislav Lolek telling the tale. It became popular with children and many Czech people as it’s their first encounter with opera. I’ve read the 1985 translation Tĕsnohlídek’s novel (pictured here) that is illustrated by American author/illustrator Maurice Sendak. Sendak also designed the New York City Opera’s production of the opera. My silk scarf pictured has illustrations designed by Klaus Haapaniemi exclusively for the Finnish National Opera production of “The Cunning Little Vixen.” The opera’s score features some of the most beautiful music ever written. It incorporates Romantic and Impressionist influences and folksongs Janáček heard in his native Moravia in the Czech Republic.
