On Jan 2nd 1936 in a small village in Poland, Slomniky, a little girl was born, Netka Knobler, later called Esther. She is my mother in law. She has only fragments of memories of her parents who were murdered in the forests of Poland after escaping from Skarzysko-Kamienna. Little Esther was 6 when the first transport of Jews was sent to concentration camps. She survived the transport, she survived the Polish forests in the winter, she survived the work camps with her parents, she survived the chasing dogs and she survived an execution at gun point. She is a survivor and her story is only hers. The horrors she saw and experienced shaped her life in later years. The loneliness of her young life shaped her soul in later years. Netka – Esther – Knobler can never forget and so can’t we. We cannot forget and cannot forgive. We can just live with the consequences of the Holocaust and adjust. Netka – Esther – Knobler lives on to form her new family. She has 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She is a Survivor. . . . . . . . . . . #holocaust #holocaustremembranceday #curator #gallery #galleriartdesign #israeliartist #artist #artisrael #pencilart #selfportrait #homedecor

Earlier this week was Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day). On that day, I posted a picture in the woods at Princeton. I spoke about how despite the fact that Giddy and I, both, didn't have grandparents in the Holocaust, the Holocaust taught Giddy & I a profound lesson. A lesson as to what the only true home for Jews is: Israel. The picture, however, is a picture of us in the woods at @princeton - a university that has recently become part of all the universities that are anti-Israel & anti-Jewish. There is great irony in that picture. Irony, that wasn't lost to Giddy or I while we were in the woods of Princeton over Pesach. It is our sincerest hope that schools like Princeton wake up, turn around, and stand up for the truth. Stand up against anti-Semitism and for Israel. Many of the 6 million Jews that were annihilated in the Holocaust were killed in the woods, had to hide in the woods, or both! Let's remember this and make sure that the woods in Princeton and college campuses throughout the United States don't become like those in Europe in 1939. If you're a college student, stay strong to the truth of Judaism, Israel, and the world. We will prevail. We always do. From my Zeide, of righteous memory, from his visit to Lithuania in 2010. In honor of Yom Hashoah: “When you stand at the mass graves of 70, 1000, 14,000, and literally touch the earth that touches them, you are chilled by the horror of it, by the ever-recurring question, “Why, why?” Whence comets this ebbing in human nature, never mind the distinction of culture? Or is there a connection which qualifies one by virtue of ideology, mythology, or religion to be a killer of innocent men, women and children? It is time to address oneself to these questions if for no other reason than to understand ourselves the better, and possibly, possibly learn to avoid such calamities in the future. Can we recreate ourselves in a new image of humanity and bring some peace into our troubled hearts? This haunting question has never left me.” Never again is now. The US has reportedly delayed sending a number of weapons to the Israeli Regime for over two weeks. This comes as the occupation entity is heavily bombarding Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah, where more than 1.2 million internally displaced people, including 600,000 children, are cramped under inhumane conditions. The delayed supplies consist of Boeing’s diameter kits for unguided bombs, which are designed to improve target accuracy. The US has also stated that the Israeli regime cannot attack Rafah without a “proper and realistic humanitarian strategy, which "Israel has consistently ignored, despite the US funding the regime’s ongoing onslaught in Gaza. Notably, in February, Biden asked “Israel” to guarantee that its forces were using American-made weapons in Gaza “in conformity with International law,” after which the Israeli regime signed a letter guaranteeing they would back in March. Interestingly, in his statement on ‘Holocaust Remembrance Day,’ Netanyahu said, "If we need to stand alone, we will stand alone." This week, democrat lawmakers in the United States House of Representatives pressured Biden to consider stopping arms sales to the Israeli regime if it does not “change its approach to its war on the Gaza Strip.” #breaking #news #may #2024 #holocaustremembranceday #holocaust #senate #america #usa #delayed

As far as we know, Michael Urich is the only survivor of his family. He has spent decades trying to find out what happened to his parents after they smuggled him out of the Warsaw Ghetto as a young boy. His mother sewed a small piece of paper into the hem of his coat as a farewell, with his name and date of birth. And with a final greeting from the mother to her son: „If you should be saved, may you do good for the people of Israel.“ After the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, he was deported to Buchenwald with his foster mother. He’s ten years old then. In April 1945, eight months after his arrival in the camp, Buchenwald was liberated by American soldiers. Urich says he weighed 24 kilograms at that point. With hundreds of other children, marked in body and soul, he is taken to Switzerland to an orphanage where he is supposed to regain his strength. He found out with the help of Polish researchers that his father had joined the partisans and was later murdered by the Nazis. Michael Urich never knew what happened to his mother, who sewed the little piece of paper into the hem of his coat more than 80 years ago. I photographed Michael Urich a few weeks ago for @zeit . He wears a baseball cap when he is Germany: „I don’t show that I’m Jewish,“ he says. „I always wear this cap. Then nothing happens to me.“ Author: Caterina Lobenstein Assistant: @linamarie_____ Picture Editor: @juttaschein #buchenwald #holocaustsurvivor #holocaustremembranceday

I had the opportunity to attend two very meaningful events in Washington, D.C., this week: the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum National Tribute Dinner and the Congressional French Caucus 80th Anniversary of D-Day at the French ambassador’s residence. On May 7, at the Holocaust Memorial Museum National Tribute Dinner, supporters gathered amid a surge in antisemitism. Ambassador Michael Herzog of Israel emphasized the enduring lessons of the Holocaust and the importance of amplifying survivors’ voices. Attendees were shown how the Museum is sharing survivors’ messages worldwide and gave a standing ovation to the large group of Holocaust survivors in attendance. The event also highlighted the Museum’s educational resources. With the 80th anniversary of D-Day approaching, General David Petraeus (Ret.) was the keynote speaker, and paid tribute to liberators, three of whom were in attendance—to include my good friend Harry Miller. The evening ended with a collective pledge to “Never Forget.” Last night, at the French ambassador’s residence, the Congressional French Caucus marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day with an impressive display of WWII props, to include a set of hedgehog anti-tank obstacles and a portion of a WWII-era landing craft, complementing several surplus Army jeeps. The event featured a scripted performance with sound, music, and paratroopers and was attended by over 700 people, including WWII veterans, lawmakers, ambassadors, and business leaders. The evening was a meaningful tribute to those who served and sacrificed during D-Day. Both of these events served as poignant reminders of the importance of remembering history and honoring those who lived through it. With antisemitism on the rise and crucial anniversaries of World War II approaching, events like these help ensure that the lessons of the past are not forgotten. #DDay80 #HolocaustRemembranceDay #ww2 #wwiifoundation

Neptune #FortMyers Service Manager Peter Piscitelli was honored to be a guest of Ret. U.S. Col. Frank Cohn, 97, at the 2024 #DayOfRemembrance at the U.S. Capitol. Col. Cohn escaped Nazi Germany at age 13 and was drafted at 18 into the U.S. Army. He served as an Intelligence Officer in WWII and spent over 30 years with the Army. He was honored at the event by House Speaker Mike Johnson, and met with @potus. Later, he was again honored by Gen. David Petraeus for his lifetime achievements and continued work with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, with the clear message there is no place in our country for hatred, discrimination, or violence. Our heartfelt gratitude to Col. Cohn for his dedication and service. #HolocaustRemembranceDay #NeverForget

Universities are not your friend Reflecting on student power, institutional power, and responsibility as witnesses to the genocide in G@za and voices for P@lestinians. #YomHaShoah, or #HolocaustRemembranceDay, was a few days ago. As we mourn and remember alongside our Jewish siblings, our commitment to preventing similar cycles of violence and radicalization must include education on the Holocaust and less studied genocides. As students lead encampments and protests across the United States, which have inspired action across the world, it has been horrifying seeing the response by school administrators to mobilize police against them. Students are being asked to return to class and continue as normal while snipers take position on campus, they are fired at with rubber bullets, and they are attacked by non-student counter-protestors. More than 2,500 students, professors, and allies have been arrested and many have been injured. A man was just charged after hitting a Columbia protestor with his car. Anti-Semitic incidents have been documented and must be condemned. The blanket idea that protests supporting Palestine are anti-Semitic is false and undermines legitimate sympathy for Palestinians. It is up to all students to challenge harmful messages and actions by leadership or opportunists and be better advocates for Jewish allies and champions for liberation for all. Over the last days, thousands of Israelis protested in Tel Aviv in support of a ceasefire and hostage deal and against the invasion of Rafah, reminiscent of anti-war protests by wives and mothers of Russian soldiers following the invasion of Ukraine. A beautiful reminder of what solidarity looks like. See @_aurorarorua’s ‘mycelium - notes on imperialism’! The dismissal of suffering in Gaza, and subsequent cause for protest, as thousands have died, millions are starving, and the invasion of Rafah has begun is gross. While students demand their schools divest, more than 80% of Gaza’s 813 schools have been destroyed. Most infrastructure is unlivable. There is no place to go, leaving the elderly, pregnant, ill, injured, disabled, and children especially vulnerable. #alleyesonrafah #rafah

Stolperstein Cleaning Event, May 8th 2024 📍 A Stolperstein or a Stumble Stone is a golden block placed in the cobblestone outside of the last known residence of a Holocaust victim. The Stolperstein states the name, date of birth, date of death, and the location of deportation. Thank you to everyone who participated and thank you to @ax.anna.ax for organizing this event. Honoring victims of the Holocaust is incredibly necessary and a positive force for good in communities. Yesterday, we gathered to remember, give back, and to stand up against violence in all forms. Coming together with community to give back to the community is a powerful tool to build connections. When we have community connections, we have empathy and investment. Next time you see a Stolperstein, take the time to read the name of the person who was murdered. Take the time to think about the streets you walk on and the history of the city of Prague. Take the time to think about gratitude and thankfulness for life and how we can improve the livelihoods of others. . . . . . #pangeaprague #holocaustmemorial #prague #stopviolence #pragueexpats #holocaustremembranceday #victoryineurope #may8 #pangea

My bby cousins in Kabul - 2011 - how cute are they • The images you see across the world particularly in Rafah, Palestine right now they are real. • They are humans. They are part of our HUMAN RACE & our responsibility as the animal kingdom to safeguard our human race - they are our children, mothers fathers, sisters, brother’s, orphans - they have or had dreams, hopes, wants, fears, joy, they have IDENTIIES & STORIES they feel like we do • To somewhat take the words of Shakespeares - Shylock - Merchant of Venice - ‘when you cut them do they not bleed’ • To dehumanise a people’s is the second step in genocide. • The first arduous step is to create a self serving, debaste & uncompassionate populace. • To create a population of endoctrinated humans based on shallow wants & vested interests rather than moral principles is a world that puts capital above human lives • The story behind the image: • Me and my bby cousins spent the day playing, I taught them how to use a swing they’d never seen or used one before. The US / U.K. occupation reopened the parks the Taliban and closed and that’s the only time I was able to go back home as my family directly escaped the Taliban we can not be near the country with them there. • The girls then at their tiny selves helped me to slaughter a lamb - well tbf they slaughtered the lamb whislt I provided moral support & ‘London girl’ assistance • They’re lives are quite shitty now • They can’t legally attend school becasue they are girls • They can’t play outside or at the parks because they’re girls • They are teenagers now so if they don’t wear burkas or commit some sort of so called crime - like not wearing a burka - they are legally allowed to be stoned to death in public • #talibanareterrorists #🍉 #holocaustremembranceday #lestweforget

Happy May 8, 2024!!!! Truly amazing guest speaker at my Rotary Club of Woodland Hills lunch meeting today! Let me introduce you to Eva Perlman. Eva is 92 year old ball of energy, wisdom, memories and a Holocaust survivor. Her and her family's story is one that truly needs to be heard. Eva was born in Germany and had to escape when Hitler and the Nazis came to power. She was forced to hide in homes throughout France and London, in a similar situation as Anne Frank, and saw many of her friends exterminated. Her autobiography is a must-read. "Guided by Miracles is an extraordinary life story that begins in hiding in the south of France during World War II, narrowly escaping capture by the Nazis. She details the many miracles that kept her family alive and permeated her long and rich life. After adventures, travel and hardships she ultimately found her purpose as a Holocaust survivor educating Jewish teens on the annual March of the Living." Friends....Never forget....recent events have once again shown us that Antisemitism is all around us and we must stand up for ourselves against those who seek to destroy us. I was the victim of antisemitism last year when my bus bench ad was spray painted with Nazi imagery and a swastika calling me a Jew Realtor. Every generation has a cicle of life, and within the evil recarnates in different people to infiltrate negativity for humanity to fall under his feet but lets not forget that all that is just created for us to remember where we are coming from and who is our king, The king of the universe... This is why also returns our messiahs to defeat our adversities.. It is sad that some people have to pay the price to keep faith high but Jews people will always be here to teach us the word of God and to remind us that we came here to be happy and love each other because Hashem don't want his people to be forgotten and want everyone live in peace and harmony #holocaustremembranceday #history #holocoustmemorialday #jewshistory #loveandlight #fitbodyandsoul #liveandlearn #holoucastrememberanceday #mariapalominoauthor #mariapalominoquotes #mariapalominoart #mariapalominofotography ❤️💜🩷💞🫶🙏

Yesterday, my father was one of three Holocaust survivors invited to share their stories at the annual U.S. Holocaust Museum’s Days of Remembrance Ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. In the president’s remarks, Biden started by welcoming “especially, the survivors of the Holocaust.” He added, “If my mother were here, she would look at you and say, God love you all. God love you all. Abe Foxman [my dad] and all other survivors who embody absolute courage and dignity and grace are here as well.” I am always incredibly proud of my father, his story and his legacy, but this ceremony and Biden’s call-out hit even more deeply in this current climate of wild global antisemitism. As POTUS said, “Never again, simply translated for me, means ‘never forget.’ Never forget. Never forgetting means we must keep telling the story. We must keep teaching the truth. We must keep teaching our children and our grandchildren.” Reminder: at the end of WWII, one out of every three Jews in the entire world, had been murdered, including my father’s grandparents and 13 of his aunts and uncles. #neveragain #neverforget #holocaustremembranceday #jewsofinstagram

On Holocaust Memorial Day this Monday, we had the privilege of hosting Lydia Susanna-Jose Hennig, born in 1932 in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), to a prosperous Jewish family. In 1941, Novi Sad fell under Hungarian control. The city endured a horrific raid in January 1942, resulting in the brutal murder of approximately 1,300 citizens, including 800 Jews, whose bodies were discarded into the Danube. Lydia and her family were among those seized. Her father was detained at the sports center along with other men, while Lydia, her mother, and sister were transported to the riverbanks, where they heard the chilling sounds of gunfire. Fortunately, they were eventually returned to the sports center and released. That night, the family made the harrowing decision to flee to Budapest, seeking refuge with relatives. With the German occupation of Hungary, Lydia's family sought shelter in the basement of their building, surviving until the war's end. Throughout this ordeal, they maintained contact with relatives confined in the Budapest ghetto. Upon liberation, Sigmund, Olga, and their daughters, Vera and Lydia, returned briefly to Novi Sad before immigrating to Israel in 1948. We were deeply honored to have Lydia share her story with us, a poignant reminder that we must never forget. #holocaustremembranceday #yadvashem #neverforget #זיכרוןבסלון #ידושם

This Monday, we commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day, reflecting on the six million Jews who tragically lost their lives during the Holocaust. We were privileged to host Bluma Schwartzberg, a Holocaust survivor, at our office. Her powerful story serves as a heartfelt reminder of our duty to remember and never forget. #HolocaustRemembranceDay #neverforget

This is my grandma. She is a great grandma, grandma, mother. She was a wife, a daughter. She is a survivor. 3 days ago she was honored in a Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony. At the age of 17 she went through, and survived, 11 concentration camps. She persevered through hunger, pain, and loss. In sickness she had a dream (in colors, as she’d like to say) that she would survive. And she did. Today she turns 97 years old. Please help me wish her a very happy birthday! (Yes she will see this as she’s active on social media) 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 #birthdaygirl #97yearsold #holocaustsurvivor #holocaustremembranceday

As a German refugee who survived World War II in Hong Kong, and subsequently migrated to England, Israel, and the USA, Erna Friedländer‘s journey is unique among the many histories of Jewish dispossession. Though few traces remain of Friedländer artistic oeuvre, she was a thoroughly modernist artist. Painter, printmaker, and teacher at the Hong Kong Working Artist Guild, she studied in Berlin under Eugene Spiro and in Paris under Mela Muter, André Lhote, and Othon Friesz before embarking on an artistic career in Milan in 1933. Join us #TODAY at 7:00pm Eastern Time ONLINE for “'Let’s Talk of Interesting People': The Story of Erna Friedländer (1890-1979)." With Noit Banai, PhD, Hong Kong, and Ketul Arnold, Boulder (Colorado). In Hong Kong, it's 7:00am on Thursday, May 9 - thank you to our speaker, Dr. Noit Banai, for making herself available at such an early hour, and all her Hong Kong colleagues, students and friends who did the same to be part of this exciting event. . . . #margaridalacerda #autoresnacionais #livrospt #literaturaportuguesa #autoresportugueses #amwriting #annefrank #amsterdsm #author #writer #bookstagram #holocausto #holocaustremembranceday #writing #writerlife #authorlife #mustread #romance #bookrecommendations #escritores #livros #literatura #autor #euescritor #leitura #leitores #livrosnacionais #recomendalivros #leiturarecomendada #culturaportuguesa

#MaiPiu #NeverAgainIsNow #Olocausto #holocaustremembranceday #YomHaShoah #shoah @romaebraica @ucei.it @museoshoahroma

Not only was it an honor to sing at the New Orleans Jewish Community Yom Hashoa Commemoration yesterday at the @wwiimuseum , but it was an honor to bear witness as the granddaughter of my Oma and Opa, who escaped Germany in 1938 and honor the memory of my great-grandmother who was killed in Auschwitz by the Nazis. We were all privileged to hear the one-woman show of Mona Golabek, “The Children of Willesdan Lane,” who brilliantly told us the story of her mother, a concert pianist, Lisa Jura, who was saved by the Kindertransport. It was a most moving evening and I thank the organizers of the event, the JCC of New Orleans, including my friend @imabynatalie and her team for creating such a meaningful commemoration. Holocaust Remembrance Day left me reflecting on how easily the world was(is?) convinced of the need for our demise. But there is something that no antagonist in our story books has been able to take away from us, and that is our traditions. I’m honored to have played a part in keeping our traditions alive for so many amazing couples throughout the years. From creating Ketubahs that you signed on your wedding day to making mezuzahs that protect your home, these are tangible pieces of our traditions that have been passed down to us for thousands of years. And no one can take those moments and faith from us 💙🤍 #holocaustremembranceday #amyisraelchai #jewishwedding #jewishweddings #jewishtraditions #jewishweddingtraditions #mezuzah #mezuzahcase #resinart #resinartist #menorah #weddinggiftsidea #stopantisemitism #traditions #ketubah #ketubahart #ketubahartist

Yom HaShoah, #HolocaustRemembranceDay, marks the #Holocaust and honors the 17 million people murdered during #Nazi Germany’s #genocide, including 6 million Jews. To commemorate #YomHaShoah, we are sharing resources on genocides, including the 10 Stages of Genocide (adapted from Dr. Gregory H. Stanton's 1996 article "The Ten Stages of Genocide," taken from https://ow.ly/x67o50Rz6JW), and a list of current genocide watches and emergencies, which can be viewed here: https://www.genocidewatch.com/_files/ugd/df1038_c0b09883aa28417ba4e5d832c80aef98.pdf. #neveragain #genocidewatch #thetenstagesofgenocide #darfur #sudan #nigeria #ukraine #gaza #afghanistan #syria #northkorea #myanmar #china #ethiopia #thedemocraticrepublicofthecongo

Update 1/3 continued in comments. Full post on FB. Here I am at my grandfather’s memorial. I still can’t walk. Israel is bombing civilians in Rafah. I have needed so much support with this injury, to be able to feed myself and live in comfort. To be able to bring anything from one place to another, one room to another. Disabled and chronically ill people are dying at staggering rates in Gaza. I think about our family’s Zionist history at the memorial. So many threads of thought. So much grief. So many connections. I won’t try too hard to make this coherent. We are all connected. None of us are free until all of us are free. Genocide is bad. I want a world where disabled people have their needs met. I want a world where all people can live with freedom and dignity. This injury has been hard for me. I have it so easy. I’ve been thinking about how we need community, how none of us can live in isolation, especially with disability. How under capitalism, most of us are all just one emergency away from losing everything. We need each other. We evolved to need each other. I’ve been thinking about all the people with chronic illness and disability in Palestine, who can’t flee, who have special access and nutritional needs, who were the first to die of starvation, or who couldn’t move fast enough to escape one form of death or another. People having surgery and C-sections with no anesthesia. Families killed because they stayed behind or moved slowly because of a disabled family member. The young girl in the next photo is Ellen. My relative. She was disabled. Killed by Nazis. I’m learning a bit about her because somebody published a book about my family and their lives in Germany. The book is in German, but from what I gather, she and her family did not flee the Nazis in time because it was hard to leave quickly while caring for a disabled person. They were killed in Auschwitz. Curt, Lilly, and Ellen. These are their faces. #holocaustremembranceday #yomhashoah #holocaust
