Meet our new 🇳🇱 Innovation Counsellor to 🇮🇳 Mr Dhoya Snijders. ➡️Tell us something about yourself and your journey to becoming the Innovation Counselor for India. I am trained as a scientist, but working in academia I never enjoyed being glued to the screen. I had an urge to go out, speak to people, present my research findings, and essentially, aim to change the world. I am a bit of an idealist at heart, and I cannot think of a better place to start aiming for change than in the largest democracy on Earth. I do believe that science and innovation are the vehicles for this: we need to constantly study and reflect upon the systems and habits we have, and tweak them for the better. ➡️How do you perceive the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) ecosystem in India ? India has some of the brightest minds on this planet, and there is much the world can learn from them. Of course the country is immense and thereby its field of institutions and their interactions are complex. But from what I have seen, it is, quite like the Netherlands, a very curious country, which welcomes new players and ideas and is open to expanding its STI-sector far beyond its borders. ➡️What sectors are you most excited to work on as Innovation Counselor for India ? I cannot say anything else but WAH! here, right? Our WAH!-agenda on Water, Agriculture, Healthcare and key enabling technologies fits comfortably as my father worked in water management and coastal protection, and there was no country he enjoyed more than India. I spent a lot of time with farmers and farm dwellers when I did my PhD in South Africa on the rural consequences of agricultural policy. Furthermore one of my first jobs was at the Ministry of Healthcare, finishing a postgraduate degree on the financialisation of the Dutch healthcare system. SweepSmart offers zero waste solutions to reduce waste and to give people a job to be proud of. The company even co-manages a number of waste collection centers in Bengaluru ! Like almost all companies, SweepSmart was also affected by the crisis and the lockdown. Projects in various Indian cities came to a sudden standstill and the crisis has a big impact on the budget. However, even during the lockdown collection of household waste had to continue, and the waste collection & recycle centers of SweepSmart were therefore never completely shut down. Now, with Unlock 1.0 and 2.0, Rob and his colleagues are slowly starting up again. For instance with upgrading ten waste collection centers in Bengaluru and setting-up a material recovery facility in New Delhi. Today is #WorldDayAgainstChildLabour. 👩🏽🤝👨🏾 The Netherlands in India supports various projects in India that address child labour in supply chains. In Panipat, north of New Delhi, the Dutch Ngo @sympanynl and @humanaindia India work together to get children out of textile factories and enroll them back into schools. Sympany trades post-consumer textile from citizens in the Netherlands of which approx. 30% is not re-wearable textile that is traded to Eastern Europe and further. As its retail chain is not completely transparent, Sympany started this project (with financial support of @rvo.nl) to be able to ensure that no child labour is part of her retail chain. Panipat houses many waste textile factories, where children are still part of the labor force. Thanks to the child labour Free Zones that Humana set up with local communities, thousands of children have been enrolled back into schools.
