Come and see @thegabrielenrique as Aret in Jupiter’s Journey to the Earth SATURDAY, MAY @ 11 2PM | SUNDAY, MAY 12 @ 2PM at @baryshnikovartscenter A life-long performer, Puerto Rican-American tenor Gariel Hernandez has been heralded for recent performances as “a wonderful tenor” (Operawire), and “the highlight of the performance.” (Maryland Thater Guide) Gabriel’s strong belief in the power of community and collaboration to create meaningful art has inspired them to collaborate with other queer community members in New York City on showcasing their locational and personal experiences. Through this, Gabriel debuted their photo series Taking Up Space: Queer Identity in Opera in 2021 at the Countee Cullen Library in New York City. In the fall of 2022, Gabriel was spotlighted for their portrayal of a queer Abraham Lincoln by America’s oldest LGBTQ newspaper the Washington Blade. Gabriel’s 23/24 season includes four role debuts as well as the mounting of a new production of Carmen. This spring they return to Opera Ithaca to portray Peter Quint in Britten’s Turn of the Screw, then make a company and role debut as Aret in Little Opera Theatre of New York’s production of Haydn’s Jupiter’s Journey to the Earth. The latest exhibition at ISLAA (Institute for Studies on Latin American Art), ‘Threads to the South’ (3/28 – 7/27/24), is a fascinating glimpse into the use of fiber within an artistic and political framework. Curated by Anna Burckhardt Pérez, the works on view reference a wide range of topics: personal identity, family, national events, and political movements; all using fiber, which some artists chose to enhance/filter through other media such as photography or video. Object labels provide excellent context for each piece, while the lighting and display of the works brings out subtle details that enrich the visitor’s experience. Next in the spotlight of our Bloodlines Interwoven Festival artists is Maeve Gilchrist (@maevegilchrist)! Maeve Gilchrist, the Edinburgh-born harpist and composer, was described by Pitchfork as being one of ten global artists helping to redefine the harp. She tours internationally as a solo artist, bandleader, and composer and as a member of the Grammy-nominated Silkroad ensemble, as well as Arooj Aftab’s Grammy-winning Vulture Prince Ensemble. Her most recent solo album, The Harpweaver, was described by The Irish Times in a five-star review as, “buoyant, sprightly and utterly beguiling.” She is even a featured artist in DreamWorks’ animated film How to Train Your Dragon. Wen-Ying Tsai • Multi-kinetic Wall, ICA Boston, 1965 Tsai, Unsatisfied with his static sculptures, Tsai began to introduce movement using motors. He created Multi-kinetic Wall in 1965, which was exhibited in Art Turned On at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Art historian Sam Hunter described the work: Tsai’s Multi-kinetics were dynamically integrated multiple constructions, employing thirty-two kinetic units, each of which contains a configuration of multi-colored gyroscopic forms. With these elements he created an active environmental field that could, apparently, be infinitely extended. Each motorized unit was a self-sufficient entity, and when it was combined with other similar units produced a large-scale kinetic work that joined visual intensity with mechanical power. Wen-Ying Tsai • Upward Falling Fountain Audio feedback controlled sculpture, vibrating water, strobe light. (1979) Tsai, born in 1928 in Amory, China, came to the United States in 1950. He studied art without interruption from the time of his childhood and received a B.S. in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. After a decade as a practicing engineer, Tsai accepted the John Hay Whitney Fellowship for painting and became a full-time artist. He was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at M.l.T., and has been represented by major contemporary galleries including Howard Wise, Denise Rene, and Wildenstein. On the concert stage, Jennifer has performed Marfa in Rothschild's Violin and Klementia in Sancta Susanna with American Symphony Orchestra, and The Defiant Requiem (Verdi’s Requiem) at Terezin and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. She holds a Bachelor of Music from USC, a Master of Arts from Hunter College, and she is a DMA candidate at The Graduate Center. Jennifer teaches at Hunter College, Queens College and for the Brooklyn Youth Chorus.

He is a leading Evangelist's in Bach's Passions and his unique dramatic interpretation of this role has confirmed his status as one of the world's most sought-after performers. He gave the world premiere of Jonathan Miller's acclaimed production of the St Matthew Passion, which he also recorded for United and broadcast on BBC TV; he repeated the role in three revival runs of the production at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York (“a sensational Evangelist”- New York Times). Rufus is also a leading recitalist, performing worldwide for twelve years with celebrated pianist Maria João Pires. The pre-and-post-pandemic seasons included both Bach Passions and Handel Messiah in New York, Charleston, Washington DC, Carmel Bach Festival, The Royal Albert Hall, and Canterbury Cathdedral; Bach Christmas Oratorio in Washington, Haydn's Creation in New Jersey, Britten's opera Owen Wingrave in New York; Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Tokyo, Winterreise with pianist Kayo Iwama in Bard’s Fisher Center and in Boston, recitals with New York guitarist David Leisner as well as recitals and masterclasses in Japan. In the 2023-2024 season, Heather makes operatic debuts with Kentucky Opera as Hannah in As One, with Intermountain Opera Bozeman in Monteverdi’s L'incoronazione di Poppea as Nerone, and reprises a favorite role as Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with the Savannah Voice Festival. Concert appearances include: five-time Emmy winning composer Jeff Beal’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari at Carnegie Hall, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem, Britten’s Canticles II and IV, Bach’s St. John Passion with Trinity Wall Street, and Handel’s Israel in Egypt with Apollo’s Fire and the New York Philharmonic. And later this spring, Heather will make their Lincoln Center soloist debut originating the role of Brittain in Bryce McClendon’s operatic play The Smallest Sound in the Smallest Space. Heather is also an active producer and co-wrote a chamber opera for vocalists, string trio, electronics, and dancer titled Expostulation(s) of Mary which was produced by the Grammy nominated Wild Up Ensemble in Los Angeles in 2023. Later this year, Heather will be a resident artist at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute to develop their forthcoming one-person piece about growing up as a trans person in the Southern church titled One Body. Meet Jen Shyu (@jenshyu), one of the fantastic artists shaping our Bloodlines Interwoven Festival, as curated by festival artistic director Kaoru Watanabe (@kaorufue). Jen Shyu is a vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, Guggenheim Fellow, USA Fellow, and Doris Duke Artist. Hailing from Taiwanese and East Timorese immigrants, she has performed her music at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and beyond. Jen’s current instruments include piano, violin, Taiwanese moon lute, Chinese er hu, Japanese biwa, and Korean gayageum. She has produced eight albums and a single as leader, making many best-of lists (The New York Times, The Nation, and NPR). Shyu is the chief-executive-officer of Mutual Mentorship for Musicians (M3) and is a Steinway Artist. She has won awards such as the 2023-2024 CS All-State Award, the Charleston 2022 Romantic Music Competition, and was picked for the From The Top Jack Kent Young Artist Fellowship. She has performed such works as Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, K. 339, and Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers, both at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. Rebecca started her musical journey through the violin, studying for seven years at various El Sistema-inspired programs such as United Children's Music Project and Opportunity Music Project. The reflections of Emma Tapley 🪞🌿 Opening next Wednesday, “Emma Tapley: After Life / Amongst the Trees” will open at DFN Projects, 16 East 79th Street (garden level). The exhibition features a selection of Emma Tapley’s recent landscape paintings: quizzical depictions of forests, ponds, lakes, and skies. Tapley playfully manipulates her subjects–flipping, reflecting, and overturning them to reveal a fantastical realm. Particularly enchanting is Tapley’s use of reflection. The veracity of her doubles is fickle: sometimes they appear as hard-edged facsimiles, and other times, waifish specters of their physical counterparts. The resulting effect is a slippage between reflection and reality, allowing the viewer to tumble into Tapley’s reversed world without even realizing it. Tapley offers these reflections as instances of resurrection; her vivid leaves, boney branches, and limitless skies finding rebirth in the surface of the water. Whether glassy and impenetrable, or punctuated by raindrops’ craters, Tapley uses a distorted sense of depth to transform these aquatic mirrors into portals, unveiling a reality at once near and far from our own. There will be an opening reception on Wednesday, May 1 from 5-7pm at DFN Projects. The artist will be present.
