Back from August 2023 #timberlinetrail We meant to go to #McNeilPoint, but we couldn't find the turn-off even after 3 tries. But, we eventially found a good open spot to camp and watch the #perseidmeteorshower on its peak night. The shooting stars were HUGE! So amazing. The black flies on this trail are no joke, though. Those little f***ers are voracious! Not my puppers, but he's pretty cute.

The reason? @mobituaries did a great segment on John Denver and I learned so much about this underrated environmentalist who wrote a song about witnessing the #perseidmeteorshower while in the #rockymountains and everyone thought it was about smoking pot. I managed to spend a bit of time (60 mins) on Bodes Galaxy (m81) last night. Named after Elert Bode who discovered it in 1774. A spiral galaxy, with a black hole at the center with a size of 70 million solar masses. Last eclipse photo, I promise! Trying to capture the experience of totality in a photograph is challenging. On Monday, I was running two cameras - one with a telephoto to capture close up details, and the other with a wide angle lens to capture the scenery. As anyone who’s used a wide angle lens knows, it creates significant distortion. Objects around the edges appear larger and closer, while objects in the center - like the sun - appear smaller and farther away. Our eyes don’t have this issue. In order to correct this and render the scene as the human eye actually sees it, I created this composite to more accurately describe the experience. This is as close to reality on Monday afternoon. I wish the camera had picked up the stars and planets, but with the short shutter speeds I was using for the timelapse, they simply did not register. It was a long day that started at 2:00am and ended at 12:30am the following day. As my timer announced “two minutes to totality,” the adrenaline started to spike. After the diamond ring, Baily’s Beads, and the last remnants of sunlight were snuffed out, I recall taking off my glasses and looking up. It’s a very disorienting feeling to look up and see the sun that you’re so familiar with, that you simply take for granted, to be replaced by a giant black orb floating in the sky. It’s frightening and awe-inspiring. Someone was weeping. Others just gasped. We were transfixed in the moment. While everybody was getting ready to shoot the eclipse, we decided to head the other way and shoot the Milky Way over this iconic arch in New Mexico. Shooting the Milky Way in the high desert and in March means really cold nights; this was one of those. And yes, that white on the bottom right is snow :). In honor of the total solar eclipse today, here’s a throwback to the first meteor shower I ever shot 💫 • 8.13.23 | Perseid Meteor Shower • I had been thinking about purchasing a mirrorless camera for a long time and had finally decided to rent the Sony a7 iv for a backpacking trip over the weekend. While I was at the camera store, someone asked “Are you shooting the meteor shower tomorrow night?” I had no idea what he was talking about. When I got home that day I spent HOURS researching how to shoot meteor showers and learning how to use my new camera. The peak of the meteor shower just so happened to be that weekend, and I was determined to take advantage of the opportunity. The next morning my friends and I set out to hike Thunder Mountain - a little over 6 miles and nearly 4,000 ft of elevation gain. At 2am I snuck out of the tent and set up my camera to catch the peak of the shower. Every couple of minutes a meteor flashed through the sky. I was so captivated that I stayed up until the sun started to peak over the mountains. And then the sunrise was so beautiful that I just accepted I wasn’t going to sleep. That day I combed through 100s of photos, and to my surprise I had TWO great shots. Yes, that’s right, TWO out of the 100s that saturated my memory card. Astrophotography takes a lot of patience, but it also brings me so much peace. I was the only one awake that night. Whether I was the only one that knew about it or the only one that cared, I don’t know. I was the sole witness of countless rocks plummeting through the earth’s atmosphere. It made me feel so insignificant but so grateful at the same time. The experience and the photos were 100% worth every second.
