In the tranquil embrace of the Zilpo Campground, nestled by the serene waters of Cave Run Lake, my quest for an elusive 180° panorama of the Milky Way’s galactic core persisted. For nearly two years, nature’s capricious whims—rain, clouds, and swelling waters—thwarted my endeavors. Yet, on a fateful Wednesday night (5/1/24), fortune favored the bold. The previous evening’s venture had been in vain, the clouds an impenetrable veil over the cosmos. Undeterred, I seized Wednesday’s uncertain promise: a fleeting window of clarity amidst the forecasted gloom. With hope as my compass, I embarked once more into the night. As I journeyed, a shroud of clouds loomed, taunting my resolve. Doubt whispered with every mile, pondering if this odyssey was yet another chase for shadows. But upon my 1:30 AM arrival, a glimmer of starlight beckoned through the thinning veil. Resolved to endure, I stood sentinel against the fickle skies. Hours waned as I cursed the celestial gatekeepers that barred my view. Frustration mounted, nearly coaxing me to surrender—but a final, stubborn stand of 15 minutes was my decree. And then, as if the heavens had heard my silent plea, the wispy clouds retreated, unveiling the Milky Way in all its splendor. Heart racing, I sprung into action, my camera a frenzied dance of shutters and lenses, capturing the clear, star-strewn canvas. The interlude was brief; within 20 minutes, the clouds marshaled their return, and the moon’s ascent began. Yet, gratitude filled my heart for the ephemeral clarity. At last, the shot was mine—a multi-row tapestry of the cosmos, from the fiery heart of the south to the regal Cassiopeia in the north. The Tadpoles and the Flaming Star! The Tadpoles Nebula (left), located approximately 12,000 light-years away in the constellation Auriga, derives its name from the tadpole-like shapes, which appear to be swimming toward the center of the nebula. These elongated structures are actually dense clouds of gas and dust, formed by intense ultraviolet radiation from nearby massive stars. On the other side of this image lies the Flaming Star Nebula (right), a stunning emission and reflection nebula illuminated by its central star, AE Aurigae. This runaway star, believed to have been ejected from its birth cluster, illuminates the surrounding nebula with its fiery glow. I captured the Hydrogen and Oxygen data for this image quite some time ago but wasn’t particularly motivated to finish the project until recently. By now, Auriga is very low on the horizon and sets behind my backyard trees shortly after dark. In order to capture enough Sulfur data to finish the project, I had to pack up my gear and go to a local farm about 10 minutes from my house, which has an unobstructed view to the horizon. ‘The Seven Sisters’ Had a canny night doing some light painting with @norths.north at The Seven Sisters, Copt Hill, Houghton le Spring this evening. The Seven Sisters are actually now just five and a half sisters, sitting on Copt Hill near Houghton-le-Spring, but there were once seven beech trees. The site is incredibly historic as it is believed to be a Neolithic burial site dating back to 2400-1500 BC. In a world quickly filling with AI generated perfection, I'm finding that imperfection is what keeps my photography human. Today, I'm leaning into a promise I made back January to share more, less-than-perfect moments. This wonderful couple loves stargazing and wanted an unforgettable photo under the Milky Way. The Putangirua Pinnacles at night. This was an especially cool night while living in New Zealand as it was the first time I truly appreciated what a dark sky was like. Stars and planets were so bright you could see parts of the ground illuminated. On top of this, it made me appreciate the lack of animals that would otherwise murder me in Canada. I never thought hiking somewhere in the dark and hanging out by myself for 10 hours would feel safe. Incredible landscape and beautiful night sky from De-Na-Zin, Bisti Badlands, New Mexico, USA. Visiting Bisti Badlands at New Mexico was in my bucket list since I saw the picture for the first time back in 2018. However, I was living in east coast and getting good weather and visiting absolutely unknown easy to lost place was in my way so far. Since I relocated to Midwest last year, I was looking at the driving distance in GPS and kept telling me, if I could get an opportunity on weekend with clear night skies, then it is possible. Finally, it happened. I drove straight 16 hours (more than 900 miles) one way to explore and enjoy one of my bucket list landscape wonder. I spent 2 nights on and again drove straight 16 hours back to home with some great memories I will cherish till my last breath. EXIF: Nikon D780 | Nikon 14-24 f2.8 Sky: 15mm | F/2.8 | 10000 | 10 seconds Foreground: 15mm | F/16 | 100 | 25 seconds Total 25 sky frames are stacked to increase signal to noise ratio. Total 3 foreground frames are focus stacked increase sharpness. The foreground exposure was captures during blue hour. The core of the Milky Way from the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The top photo was taken during an outing to Hick's Lake near Harrison Hot Springs, BC. This would be considered a bortle 3 area. The bortle scale is used as a measurement of sky brightness, where 1 is a dark sky and 9 is an inner city. Both are quite dark skies, but definitely could be better. Finally the result of my last astro hike with @eg_astrophotography . Unfortunately the sky was nearly completely covered im clouds when we arrived at the summit of bodenschneid around 3am. I took a quick pano at 24mm f/2.8 with only 3-5x 1min per panel for the sky and 1min single frame panels for the landscape. There was a hint of the galactic core shining through a gap in the clouds but it wasn't satisfying. Maybe 1h earlier it would have worked out. So i decided to add an additional shot of the core which i took in another night and blended it in APP. The additional data is just a single frame of 24mm f2.8 and 2min exposure time.
