CHELSEA BRIDGE OPENED OTD 1937. Originally named for Queen Victoria, but quickly rebranded to avoid any association between the Royal Family and collapse. The bridge was narrow and structurally unsound, so it was felt that - to borrow a modern phrase - the optics wouldn’t look good. Built for access to a new public park on what was once marshy Battersea Fields, now infilled with 150,000 tons of rocks and earth from excavating Royal Victoria Dock. Victoria was an appropriate name, but then during construction another unfortunate discovery: Roman and Celtic skeletons and weapons marked the site of an ancient ford and invasion: here Julius Caesar and his army first crossed the Thames 54 BC. More unfortunate branding. In the end the bridge was taken down and replaced by new Chelsea Bridge, opened OTD by Prime Minister of Canada, who was in London for the coronation of King George VI. Classic own goal, new Chelsea Bridge was painted red and white - Arsenal colours - but the structure of the bridge was robust and the colours scheme was corrected. The first self-anchored suspension bridge in Britain, with chains in a heavy deck, not massive concrete blocks on the bank. Floodlit from below during the hours of darkness and an elegant light show. The towers and cables are illuminated by 936 feet of light-emitting diodes, and with careful branding, the heavy deck is made light.

Our first outing to the river in the month of May was a very interesting experience. One of the wonderful things we found was this immensely rare amulet from one of the Greatest Buddhist Masters in the History of Thai Buddhism and Amulet making. ‘The Hanuman Nuea Krang amulet’, from the Great Miracle Monk, Luang Por Opasi. We thought the amulet was made of glass but it’s actually made from a Red and Black Resinous Herbal Paste, which features the four armed Hanuman yawning at the Moon. The amulet has a hole through it for threading a cord for attachment to a waistcord or pendant chain. Released Circa 2485 BE (1942) it’s recommended uses were Protection, Power, Victory, Mercy, Charm, Increased Intelligence, Invincibility, Gain and Trust. Bits and pieces from my bank holiday weekend. Saturday worked with students from the Amos Bursary an amazing charity working with secondary school global majority students. Was a privilege to step in and facilitate three workshops on Saturday afternoon at the Barbican. You’re getting mostly the working photos. Forgot to take photos of all the lovely social times because too busy enjoying myself. Visited a new garden centre in Sevenoaks and managed to get myself a Eucalyptus tree. Syon Park looks spectacular bathed in sunlight. The grounds of Syon House have a unique history; the stunning conservatory completed in 1827. Thomas Harriot is also celebrated at Syon House with a plaque, on the pathway connecting the house to the gardens. Thomas was relatively unknown until the 1900s, when his achievements were acknowledged in his first biography written in 1876 by Henry Stevens. He was a mathematician who pioneered binary notation and the theory of light refraction. Most significantly he was the first scientist to draw the surface of our moon using a telescope, on 5 August 1609. Predating Galileo Galilei‘a achievement by a few months. 🔭 The lake area is beautiful during spring. After six weeks away from the river, as a mudlark friend put it, I’m now ‘back in the game’ and feeling grateful to be here. Favourites from my first lark were a pipe bowl with a beautiful heart-shaped heel stamp which is catalogued and dated to 1670/80, probably originating from outside London (no maker’s name for the initials as yet) and an 18th Century tombac button/cufflink with a recessed petal, floral design; both modest finds but I’m just happy to be on the foreshore again, getting my eye back in ready for next time! #mudlarking #riverthames #claypipe #button
