Miniature Transmission (1979) (UK 12” Version) Transmission is one of my favorite Joy Division tracks – propulsive, eerie, one of the great guitar/bass duels between Sumner and Hook and, of course, those vocals that teeter on a razor’s edge. Completing this cover represents one of the few difficult things about putting this project together: deciding which cover art version to actually use. Having first seen the 12” version depicted here on a trip to Paris in 1989, it has always held a special place in my mind. The blurred image captures the propulsive quality of the song perfectly, and the colors (one of the only Joy Division cover designs to feature color of any kind) compliment the “moment frozen in time” nature of the image really well. As for the execution of this painting, keen eyes will notice that the Factory Records catalogue number doesn’t match the actual release. Fac13 was actually the catalogue number for the original 7” version that featured the Orion Nebula on the cover. The 12” depicted here is actually catalogued as Fac 13.12 (presumably to differentiate it as a 12” release). I felt if I attempted to include that, as well as some other lettering I chose to omit, I would lose legibility given the scale I working in. Having the Fac13 here, rather than Fac13.12, also provides a subtle call out to having made the choice between two different, yet connected, cover art versions. Miniature Unknown Pleasures (1979) (UK Album Version) A sublime introduction to the Peter Saville cover design ethos and later to become one of the most iconic record covers of all time. The image features a “stacked plot” depicting the radio emissions of a pulsar originally named CP1919 (now named PSR B1919+21). The image first appeared in a 1970 PhD thesis written by graduate student Harold D. Craft, Jr entitled “Radio Observations of the Pulse Profiles and Dispersion Measures of Twelve Pulsars”. In that iteration it featured a white background with black lines. This version of the image would later be reproduced for the not-so-compellingly titled “Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy” (1977) where it was found by Joy Division guitarist Bernard Sumner on his lunch break and subsequently co-opted, this time with the now-famous black background, by Saville. This was a relatively simple reproduction, though only because of the scale I was working at. In fact, it was one of the few where the small scale actually made it easier to work, rather than more difficult. In time away from baggage-handling at Manchester airport, he worked as a DJ, favouring northern soul and reggae. A Stiff and Chiswick record labels talent night featured, last in the running order, a quartet known as Warsaw, but that night performing as Joy Division. On this day in 1980 (2 May), Joy Division performed at Birmingham University High Hall in what would be their final ever show. The band was scheduled to tour the US later that month, but the tour never happened due to Ian Curtis’ suicide the day before the band was supposed to fly out. A part-recording of this live performance was included on the 1981 outtakes and b-sides compilation album, “Still”. The band also used the Birmingham University show to perform a new song they’d written, “Ceremony”. Arguably one of the best British films of the last 30 years, certainly one of the best of the 21st century so far. Michael Winterbottom's 2002 version of the story of Factory Records, told from the point of view of the late great Tony Wilson played by Steve Coogan. The film looks superb. Shot on video the processed in post production to make the frame look like it was shot on film, it gives the image a kind of 70s/80s/90s documentary feel. From a script point of view this film is an example of anarchic brilliance! Written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, it manages to capture the frenetic and at times hilarious Factory Records business practices. The cast assembled to bring this story to life is of the highest standard. Coogan is joined by Paddy Considine as New Order/Joy Division manager Rob Gretton, Andy Serkis as producer Martin Hannett, Lennie James as Alan Erasmus and notably Sean Harris as Ian Curtis. Coogan is probably the best choice to play Wilson, he served as one of the inspirations for Coogan's iconic Alan Partridge. On the commentary track on the blu ray Wilson himself hails the casting of Serkis as Hannett. Apparently Hannett was significantly weirder than Gollum! As Wilson states himself this is a film about dead people. Hannett died from a Heroin overdose in 1994, Rob Gretton died from a heart attack in 1999 and of course Curtis took his own life in 1980. Wilson himself passed away in 2007, at only 52 this was a tragic end to the story of a true British original. Factory Records are responsible for some of the best music ever produced. Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays, A Certain Ratio and Cath Caroll to name but a few. It's end in 1994 and the closing of the Hacienda in 1997 felt like we were robbed of a cultural standard that we've never regained. I adore this movie, it's one of the few that can bring a tear to my eye. It also has some of the best DVD extras ever. Wilson's commentary is brilliant. His acerbic wit, charm and skill as a raconteur is remarkable. Watch this then enjoy all the Spotify play lists this masterpiece inspired. RIP 27 February 2010 Lawrence John Cassidy (18 April 1953 – 27 February 2010) an English musician, best known for being the singer and bassist of post-punk and electronic band Section 25. Section 25 formed in Poulton-le-Fylde near Blackpool, Lancashire, in November 1977. Initially the band was a duo, consisting of brothers #larrycassidy (bass, vocals) and #vincentcassidy (drums). In June 1978 they made their live debut with Phil Denton on guitar. Denton was replaced in November #paulwiggin June 1979 saw the Cassidy brothers promote a charity gig in aid of International Year of the Child at Blackpool Imperial Hotel, featuring Section 25 and other local bands as well as Joy Division and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. As a result, #section25 were invited to play at the Russell Club in Manchester, and joined Factory Records. Their debut 7″, "Girls Don't Count", was released in July 1980 on Factory Records, produced by Ian Curtis and #RobGretton of #joydivision All Section 25 releases would be released through either Factory Records (until the demise of that label), or sister imprint #factorybenelux . Their debut LP, Always Now, appeared in 1981 and was produced by Martin Hannett at Britannia Row studio. The pochette sleeve was among the most expensive and elaborate in the label's history designed #PeterSaville utilising an exclusive 'marble' effect design printed on the inner jacket and a fold-out cover that resembled a match-book similar to the cover used #CabaretVoltaire for their 2x45 album.

The strange things / sound effects they recorded in the studio together, the studio chit chat and interplay between Hannett, Gretton and Joy Division members is all here as Martin left his own tape machine running throughout studio sessions. On this album there are rare alternative mixes of Joy Division that were Martin's personal favourites and he had the forethought to get the band members to give him control of these recordings. On this day in 1979 (16 Feb), Joy Division were scheduled to play at Eric’s in Liverpool. However, there is little or no evidence in existence to prove the gig actually ever took place. According to band Manager, Rob Gretton’s notes, the proposed set list was as follows:- Exercise One She’s Lost Control Shadowplay Leaders of Men Insight New one (probably “Disorder”) Glass Digital Ice Age Warsaw Transmission Synth One (probably “I Remember Nothing” Whether or not the band stuck to this set list on the night though (assuming they actually performed) is uncertain. The set list is mysteriously pretty much identical to that for the gig on 14 Mar 1979 at Bowden Vale Youth Club, Altrincham. Not quite 46 years ago to the day but on 25 Jan 1978, after changing their name from Warsaw (inspired by the track, “Warszawa” from David Bowie’s “Low” album), Joy Division made their live debut when they played at Pips Disco in Manchester. Foreign Press - Downpour 7". 1979, Streets Ahead Records This is the debut single from Manchester band Foreign Press, who sadly never released a full-length record before breaking up in 1989. Recorded at the famed Cargo Studios in Rochdale (you may have seen dopey photos of me posing like a foxy jackass in front of the old building) and co-produced by Joy Division manager Rob Gretton, this record sorta sounds like Magazine while their later singles are more commercial and less memorable to my ears. They had some lineup changes but it's a shame they didn't release more records during this era of the band.
