Parents often ask me “Is my child saying enough words?” or “Should I be concerned about xyz?” Every child develops at a different pace and in different ways. But here are 5 things you can do with any child , even babies and toddlers. When they’re talking to you, try to make eye contact. Give them time to respond. Don’t ask them a million questions but rather model language. Build on what they say - this shows that you heard them and shows them how to elaborate. And most importantly, play! AI is here to stay! Need some ideas to incorporate AI with your learners using AAC? Unsure of what AI prompts to use? We have teamed up to give you our thoughts and ideas. 👇🏻 1-Create a story. Using the character, setting, problem and resolution framework, your student can select vocabulary words to build a story. Make sure to include the grade or reading level. 2-Create an illustration for a book or story. Using Canva AI Image generator, use the same words from the story to generate an image. The more details the better. 3-Create song lyrics or poetry. Using the intro, verse, chorus and outro framework, your student can select vocabulary words to create a song. It’s a poetry slam! Use vocabulary words to create a haiku, limerick, sonnet, etc. 4- Generating reports ( science, social studies, English, etc). Using the descriptive teaching model when given a topic, have your student select vocabulary to create a sentence, paragraph or multi-paragraph report. Other thoughts from us: These ideas do not replace writing opportunities and giving access to a keyboard or all 26 letters of the alphabet to create written work. Consider noting “created with the help of AI” at the bottom of a learner’s creation. Consider highlighting your learner’s target words or portions they contributed in their creations. Vet themed play this morning to work on expanding phrases 🐕 🐱 We started with the Busy Day: Vet story to see any the different animals and things a vet would do. It was perfect for introducing themed vocabulary 🐰 Next we broke out my favorite toy...critter clinic! We used phrases like: get key, blue key, open door, red door, hi doggy, sick cat, check eyes/ears/mouth (and this preschoolers favorite.... "Check butt!" 😅) 🐶 Last we grabbed the vet page from my Community Helpers Core Word Activities and paired it with real bandaids to help the pets feel better. This was a HIT! As a new clinician, I would often jump right into therapy without teaching the basics at a foundational level. Don’t be afraid to spend some time before jumping straight into elicitation. Teaching about the articulators before diving into /ɹ/ production training can be beneficial for many reasons, including giving you and your student a common vocabulary for cueing. (Preston et al., 2020) And remember, teaching can look different for each client, so be sure to tailor your approach to their needs and attention levels. Something that can help your child’s early communication is the #OWLMethod. This stands for: 🦉Observe: Watch your child to see what he/she does and what’s capturing their attention! 🦉Wait: After commenting, wait and give your child time to communicate! Silence is ok! You’re letting your child know that you’re giving him/her a chance to communicate. 🦉Listen: Take time to listen to what your child is saying & don’t interrupt. This will let your child know that you value what he/she has to say!
PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance or pervasive drive for autonomy) relates to the display of significant resistance or avoidance of everyday demands or requests made by others, which can include demands for communication. This can make it difficult to support with an AAC tool. Some things to try if you notice PDA with an AAC user you support: 🌟OFFER LOW PRESSURE COMMUNICATION PARTNER STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT AUTONOMY 🌟FIND ALTERNATIVES SUCH AS ANOTHER DEVICE, AN EDITING SOFTWARE, PEN LIGHTS, OR OVERLAYS TO OFFER MODELS ON 🌟CUSTOMIZE FOR PERSONALIZED INTERESTS AS WELL AS SUPPORTS FOR SELF-ADVOCACY Not all AAC users will display PDA, but if you notice an AAC user is showing signs of PDA, these are some things you might want to try. These are great strategies to use for ALL AAC users, but particularly important to reduce device abandonment and support authentic connection when communicating. What Qs do you have on this topic? GSC dump + rant 🥲 Grad programs get increasingly intense and I’m not a fan. My schedule is so full that I (almost) feel guilty doing anything but slp work. I’m at the point of not being able to work full or part time, looking for a job bc you need income as an adult 🙃, having to organizing my own materials and start to use them on MY terms and not other therapists’ terms, self-learning how to change the mindset of being a student who observes and learns to being a student at the edge about to fly(make clinical decisions) on my own, concurrent research projects (3 at the same time feels targeted), and all the others things I’m too tired to remember that is on multiple sticky notes around my home. By the age of 4, you should generally understand most of what your child says, although there may still be occasional instances of unclear speech or mispronunciation.
