I’ve always struggled with feelings of not belonging. I remember when I was at créche, I used to play with other kids and for some reason we enjoyed playing in the rubbish dump. We would get cuts from old thrown away tin food lids and the first time it happened, I decided that I would no longer play there because it was harmful to me. I remember sitting with the teacher at play time and other kids would come crying from from having being cut only to repeat the same thing the next day. My little self didn’t understand why they’d go back to the same place that kept hurting them over and over again. And I would just sit watching them day after day coming back with the same cuts. One day I woke up and decided that I didn’t want to go to that crèche anymore (maybe because of that but I know this wasn’t the only reason). I remember waking up and telling Gogo (granny) that I wanted to go to a crèche with white children 😂🫢. She made a call to my parents and told them what I had said and that was the end of my experience at that crèche. Fast forward to my experience at the new crèche which I loved but somehow felt that I was “too much” and that I should tone it down to fit in with other kids. Along my spiritual journey I’ve been re-connecting to my ancestral roots. To those coming from different places in Southern Africa and to those who come from the main lands of Scotland. My paternal side therefore being predominantly coloured in the South African demographic system. I always found myself feeling confused at school as to what I was, was I coloured or black? especially when we had to tick the boxes on official forms of what race we belonged to. As an initiated msebeletsi (African traditional worker/healer) with certifications and background in eastern and western healing modalities, I’ve often found myself asking questions of where do I belong. Having knowledge and lived experience of western healing modalities and ways of doing things but also working with the traditional african way of healing I now find myself embarking on a journey of needing to bridge both “worlds” and find peace with it. To some, revealing their feelings is a sign of weakness where society expects them to be strong (namely men). 💪🏼 So, they keep them hidden. 🙅🏼‍♂️ To others, disclosing their feelings is putting themselves in danger where it has been safer to be unseen and unheard. So, they suppress and repress them. Both ways of relating to emotions and coping with feelings are a maladaptive strategy in a world that feels unsafe to be authentic. Celebrating Me today! I am so proud of myself for overcoming and conquering some of my fears! Most of the times I put on a persona of being almost invincible..not literally but because I feel like I can handle so much that life brings me but I do have things that I am afraid to face! Contemplating this but here’s my truth. I thought I’d get a head start in letting you all in to what I struggle with from time to time. We all have our struggles and I just want to let you know it’s actually ok to be vulnerable. There’s power in vulnerability 💜 learning to feel secure in an insecurity. No feeling is forever and everyone will express differently, I tend to process mine through talking, journaling, singing, exercising and when I start to stop doing those things I feel build up of tension that brings negativity. Over the last few weeks there has been a decline in all the things I’d do for my own self care and I am aware of it and I will get back to it. Trusting the process 💜 again I want to highlight it’s ok not to be ok all of the time, please do speak up and speak out. Whether that be to family, friends, colleagues, specialists or putting pen to paper. To be direct and transparent with you all, is MY direct quote on my primary focus of doing Mister SA 2024 is: "Mental Health Awareness. A topic that is dismissed or overlooked but serves as the constant issue amongst our people. There are various ways in which mental health issues display themselves. One way is an unstable mental disorder which can create a narcissistic or disruptive person which affects society, causing mental damage on a person. For example in our nation we have incredibly beautiful, talented and creative artists but often fall under the trap of being taken advantage of. That is because of the lack of Artist Unions and the overlooking of artists by society. Which leads me to question-- Why is artists and art blatantly dismissed? We are a country with one of the most beautiful landscapes and wildlife but we are faced with the obstacle of a brutal killing of our environments and animals . Weigh-in-Wednesday: 20 weeks post-op and I’m down 5 lbs this week. Y’all I reached 100 lbs down today since starting this journey in August 2023. I can’t believe that after losing 100 lbs I can say I still wear the same the clothes and most of them still fit okay. This week I’m trying to stay on top of protein, I had an egg and chicken last week and was able to keep them down. Im hoping I can move past the protein shakes and Greek yogurt and start consuming my protein in solid foods again. First it’s the forward to life To living and then looking 👀 to reflect So sometimes yes the order we go from is future, present to past OR present, future past 😆 Just like the order of these 2 photos. I’m making many connections right now. Without one there is no other. Just like the sun and moon. Just like sadness and happiness. I read this book at barns and noble this one day when I felt so down called “No lotus no mud” by Thich Nhat Hanh . He said exactly how without one there is no other. It was in that space of feeling so sad and down and just me being where I was in life that it CLICKED ! The many sides of the direction we take the photos gives us different experiences, views on what we see and what is shown reflected in the photo captures/taken. But that is us too in life. Find your passion, follow your dreams... They said. Being multi-passionate sometimes feels like not knowing what you want... Exept change, maybe. In my experience, Whatever I started doing my way, With foundational approach, dedication, and determination, I ended up falling in love with what I was doing. Becoming even more passionate to do more of it, Especially when reaching the stage when things start to be easy, Because they are absolved, known, understood... Followed with curiousity about what's next, what else is possible, how far it or I could go... Followed by passion, yes!! It seems that passion might be self-created by allowing ourselves to just dive deeper in whatever we choose to do. So, one approach to feeling passion might be becoming a Master of something. It may be easier if the first choice is something we love. But even in situations when the activity is not that likeable at the beginning, What is needed is overcoming that beginner resistance of the unknown. And again, the only way to do that is to dive deeper into what you don't know until it becomes known and comfortable. I heard someone compare adolescence with middle age and they referred this time to “middle-essence”. That lit me up🤩. Is that what I’m feeling? I’m not ready to wind down. I’m just getting started! I have a whole long list of experiences and wonders that fuel me to tackle what life still has to offer. I entered adulthood following the plan that was expected. I naturally threw in a few of my own tweaks by becoming a young mother before, during and after my degrees in education but I wouldn’t change any of it! It was just as it was supposed to be. It was rough and rocky. It wasn’t Pinterest perfect but there were definitely some IG worthy times 😂. Oh the content I would have had…but you know what? I would have been far too concerned with “appearances” and other peoples opinions. I wouldn’t dare put myself out there like that then. Now? I’m still learning and growing but it’s all “extra credit” 😆 from my perspective. I put myself out there, I make the rules this time and I decide which road to travel. If I get lost or fall down, I’m good.
