Meet Jennifer Scharf, MA, CCC-SLP, an extraordinary ordinary SLP who stutters! Jennifer’s early therapy experience focused on fluency shaping strategies, but instead of helping her, these strategies only led to more frustration. That frustration has been the motivation behind learning more about stuttering, how others experience it, and how to approach students and clients who stutter with greater compassion and empathy. Today, Jennifer uses her struggles and triumphs to guide her therapy and educate colleagues and SLPs in many different ways. “Looking back, I regret how much time and energy I spent practicing ‘fluent’ speech and trying to perfect fluency shaping strategies while always struggling to use them in communication situations in my real life. This led to an increased amount of frustration as I still had no idea why talking was so difficult for me and so easy for others. Kai kūdikis gimsta, jam itin svarbu išmokti taisyklingai kvėpuoti, žįsti krūtį, ryti maistą ir seiles. Tuo metu toliau labai aktyviai vystosi žandikaulio skeletas. Tinkamai vystytis trukdo žalingi įpročiai: piršto čiulpimas, lūpų kramtymas, piktnaudžiavimas čiulptuku, liežuvio kišimas tarp dantų, kvėpavimas per burną, netaisyklinga laikysena, netinkama mityba, prasta burnos higiena. 📍Atkreipkite dėmesį ir pasakykite pastabą vaikui, jei jis nuolat ką nors kaišioja į burną, čiulpia, būna prasižiojęs, kaišioja tarp dantų liežuvį, kramto arba tampo lūpas, rankas nuolat pasikiša po smakru prilaikydamas galvą. 📍Stebėkite, kad vaikas laiku išmoktų valgyti kietą ir visavertį maistą, tinkamai jį nurytų. Išmokykite prižūrėti dantukus. Bet kol vaikai maži, valyti jų dantis turi suaugęs žmogus. Besikeičiant pieniniams dantims būkite budrūs, nes gali nepastebimai kisti vaiko sąkandis. 📍Stebėkite vaiko kvėpavimą, ypač pasireiškus alerginėms reakcijoms ir slogai. Tai taip pat gali turėti didelės įtakos sąkandžio formavimuisi. 📍Stebėkite vaiko sąkandį nuolatos, nes blogas sukandimas gali provokuoti ne tik estetines, bet ir sveikatos problemas, o jei matote, kad vaiko sąkandis netobulas (asimetriškas sukandimas, kreivi ar atsikišę/susigrūdę dantys ir pan.), Jums gali pagelbėti šie specialistai: logopedas/logoterapeutas, miofunkcinės terapijos specialistas, odontologas/ortodontas. Nowadays Larry's story may not be fully accepted in the stuttering community, which makes me sad, because I believe every person who stutters has a right to define overcoming and do whatever they want to with their stuttering, speech, and communication, even attain more fluency (gasp!) in whatever way works for them. Larry @steinonstuttering did this self-work 10 years ago. I'm excited for Larry's story to join the variety of others I have already debuted. I feel his experience is just as valuable as another person who stutters who found and chose voluntary stuttering, acceptance, cognitive work, and avoidance reduction etc. without the pieces Larry worked on. I'm building a curated video library of HOPEFUL stories from those who stutter called Words of Wisdom on my YouTube channel. My fourth episode is Larry Stein...who suffered for decades with depression and it wasn't until his 50's that he dedicated two years of intense work independently on his communication to get to the place of happiness and freedom he is in now.
