🍒 Such a Fun Age 🍒 This was Such a Fun Book. I found the main character’s indifferent yet anxious voice regarding her life and future so relatable. What twenty something doesn’t feel lost and aimless and in constant comparison to her friends and family? The theme of racism in today’s day and age intertwines with the protagonist’s search for her sense of purpose and drive. Her job as caretaker to a white child, her boss’s interest in her stemming almost exclusively from a need to alleviate a life of white guilt, even her boyfriend’s seeming fetishization of her culture and identity, all propel her forward into position of coming to terms with what she wants to do for the rest of her life and what she absolutely does NOT want to do. The relationship between the protagonist and the little girl she babysits is charming and funny and definitely the highlight of this book. It was giving the same vibes as movie, The Help, with significantly less white saviorism and way more micro-aggressions. The church is in need of repair, but Christ Episcopal Church in Church Hill is now getting new life and undergoing restoration with the help of the community including the director and the producer of the movie The Help. "I was driving down (highway) 553 and came around the bend and saw the store and saw the church," said Tate Taylor, a Jackson native and director of the 2011 movie The Help, which was filmed in Mississippi. "I had a spiritual wash come over me. "It has that effect on people. It's the oldest (Episcopal) congregation in the state. I really took to the church. I've been asked if it was real or just a movie set." . Meet Rachel! Rachel and her husband and children live on a small farm in TR. She wears several hats - wife and mom and content creator and graphic designer and interior decorator. “My husband and I settled in TR proper during covid and it’s definitely our ‘resting’ place, I don’t see us going anywhere else and I personally believe it’s one of the best small towns the upstate has to offer!” @rachel.sekuras spent six months in India and South East Asia and brought home an insatiable love for pho, sushi, curry and ramen. She loves The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and the movies The Help and Slumdog Millionaire. Of course, these days she says she’s mostly watching Bluey - but she’s not mad about it. You’ll often see Rachel trying old processes: plant dye, paper making, fermenting. She sews and paints and sings. Basically - a renaissance woman! “I want to try everything at least once,” she says. Rachel says, “Lately the thought that ‘If you argue your limitations, you get to keep them’ has reminded me that yes, everyone can find a reason to not change or try something new that they might fail at. But isn’t it easier to just try the new thing instead of wasting energy defending why you can’t?” She’s a fan of all sorts of music - particularly anything with a cello. She drinks her coffee as a double shot americano with some cream. She loves antiquing and slow and peaceful dinners and moving her furniture around often. (Ah - a kindred.) And - best of all - she loves TR just like all of us. “I love how small yet central it is. We’re somehow 4 minutes from Main Street and all the local spots, but a quick hop to some of the South’s most gorgeous mountains, and I could even jet to the beach for a quick weekend. How is all that possible in one town?! It’s a special little place we have.” It is, indeed. Rachel - so glad you are TR.

What a wholesome and thought-provoking movie that was! Just like "A Time to Kill," which I watched last month with the terrific Matthew McConaughey, “The Help” also raises many thoughtful questions about racism, prejudices against black people, and class discrimination. These two movies create the perfect match! “The Help” is not for the faint of heart; it is a tough and emotional watch. I have to admit that I teared up many times while watching it. The movie has two really strong aspects. Firstly, I loved the fact that it tried to tell us such a tough story in a lighter way with some comedic elements, but racism remains a hard discussion and a projection on and off the screen. Describing all the hardships, starvation, the slave trade, etc., is difficult, especially when the times comes to explain it to your little curious child. The movie also doesn't shy away from depicting the violence and fear the “Maids” faced if they did or said something “wrong” in the eyes of their bosses. The punishment could even be death, and no government would care. Skeeter's determination to expose the harsh realities faced by these maids, despite the risks involved, adds a layer of tension and urgency to the narrative. The second and perhaps the strongest aspect of the film was the incredible performances! Viola Davis was exceptional, delivering one of her best leading performances of her career. She perfectly captured Aibileen Clark, a stoic and resilient maid who becomes the heart and soul of the narrative. Octavia Spencer was also incredible, winning an Oscar for her performance. She portrayed a challenging and complex character, vigorous but sensitive. Lastly, Emma Stone was outstanding, displaying great chemistry with Davis. She captured the intensity and ambition of her character faultlessly, navigating a society full of prejudice and inequality. I believe this movie is a must-see, and I highly recommend it. My only minor issue is that it is quite long, and there are times that the pacing is too slow. Overall, is a great movie and is worth the praise! My rating is 8/10. What are your thoughts on it? Me emocioné, me indigné, lloré, me reí. Una catástrofe de sensaciones y sentimientos todos alborotados. Podemos ver el racismo, el machismo y la discriminación, las diferentes formas en que actúa cada persona en base a eso, como lo viven, como lo sufren y como lo afrontan. Las actrices son maravillosas, todas sin excepción. Podés amar a una como odiar a otra. Cada testimonio te llega a lo más profundo y hace que quién está viendo empatice con lo que sucede y quiera traspasar la pantalla para gritar ESTO ESTÁ MAL. Adoré a Skeeter. No tengo palabras para expresar mi amor por ella y sus convicciones, anhelos e ideas. Comparto mucho con este personaje.
