The vegan breakfast sandwich from Bunny’s when I first tried it in 2022 vs today. Back then it was made with a Portofino bun before they were discontinued (a former PM’s son’s venture capital firm cut quality after getting involved and upped prices) and the Very Good Butcher patty - I think we all know that story, another economic Icarus. 🌰 Our Amazake is a unique fermented rice beverage! We like to think of it as a wholesome and tasty energy drink. 🌱 It has no added sugar, but it's naturally sweet after the fermentation process. We make our Amazake from brown rice and koji (aspergillus oryzae), which produces an enzyme. The enzyme changes rice starch into glucose, without any added sugar at all! In the manufacturing process, it is pasteurized before bottling to stop fermentation, so that it contains no alcohol. An honest review of weekend lunch at Charlotte and the Quail as a vegan: Charlotte and the Quail is located at the HCP Gardens in rural Saanich and it is named after the garden’s cat that I’ve never seen. It’s a brunch spot catering mainly to omnivores. I say this because they don’t offer any egg-alternative brunch items for vegans. The menu does change regularly and they focus of fresh local foods. Let me start with the good, the oat matcha latte was beautiful, the camera loved her and it is dairy-free by default. So is the cashew hollandaise sauce. They don’t offer a dairy version, a surprise! I got it paired with some hefty sweet potato wedges and this was my favourite part of the meal. I did not like the sound of the vegan dish on menu, a mushroom salad of sorts so I made my meal out of sides: soup, bread, and the wedges. I ordered sourdough and clarified no dairy butter but they mistakenly gave me gluten free bread but did replace it. I took a few bites of the seed bread out of curiosity and wasn’t into it. I think this fits well into the -not totally getting or wanting to cater to vegans- vibe, because the experience of asking if there are vegan items and then being told about gluten free offerings is ubiquitous for vegans today. Non-vegans conflate the two and this happens a lot, which is why vegan options listed on the menu are table stakes for me when deciding where to go. If they had a tofu egg to pair with that cashew hollandaise this could be an amazing brunch spot that vegans can dine at with non-vegan friends without feeling like you’re getting the short end of things. Currently, no such place exists in Victoria that is doing both well and with wholesome ingredients to boot. We finished things off with this cheesecake that looked a lot better than it tasted. It was quite dense. I tried @vagabondpies for the first time earlier this month at their recurring pop-up at Picnic Too on Fort St. They’ve got two vegan pies on menu right now; - soy chorizo chimichurri - red za’atar This is easily the **best pizza** I have had since moving to Victoria. I grabbed an order of the tots and ranch with my own takeaway container - they only have pizza boxes for takeaway, so plan to dine in or BYO if you want tots. The seasoning on the tots was great and I really liked the vegan ranch. Next pop-up is this coming Friday, March 29. Also pictured, @vegassist brought me treats from Denver’s @thecakebardenver and I loved the cake and frosting, even though it got a little squished.
