Big debate on social media recently about whether the jetty is sinking or got cut down, or if the sand is slowly creeping up. The answer is that the sand in the bay is getting higher each year, making the jetty (and Pier legs) seem smaller. As evidence, this lovely 1967 image from Jean Hutchinson shows how many steps there were in the sea defence wall. I'll turn everything to rust before I'm finished. This pier was built during the early reign of Queen Victoria and later extended during the Edwardian period. During its long life it has seen it all - mighty trans-Atlantic liners have called there, soldiers have departed from there to fight for King and Country, and it was once the mecca for sea fishermen, but no more. It has been closed to the general public since 2019 due to 'safety issues', but angling takes place there on designated days for members.
