It’s like Bert & I taken to the front porch with bullshitters swapping stories they’ve heard a couple dozen times already. I like the anti-tourist sentiment that runs through a lot of the conversation, feels very Maine. Harsh Reality are a little-known, proto-prog band formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, in 1968 out of the remnants of the Freightliner Blues Band (formerly the Revolution). The band consisted of Mark Griffiths and Dave Jenkins on guitars, Alan Greed on lead vocals and organ, Roger Swallow on drums, and Steve Miller on bass and backing vocals. They released a single for Philips Records in 1968 ("Tobacco Ash Sunday" / "How Do You Feel") before releasing their only album, Heaven and Hell, also on Philips in 1969. A final single followed soon after, before the band split in 1969. Their Heaven and Hell LP is now a highly sought-after rarity, selling for hundreds of pounds between eager collectors. For this reason, Harsh Reality is somewhat famous/infamous in collecting circles. Now playing: Hairy Chapter – Can't Get Through (1971). Hairy Chapter were a German hard rock band from Bonn who released two albums under their own name between 1969 and 1971. Hairy Chapter emerged from the Bonn band The Concentric Movement, which had been formed in 1966. From 1970 the band performed under the name Hairy Chapter, which they kept until their break-up in 1971. The first album under their own name was released on Opp in 1970 and was called Eyes (LP, 1970). Musically, Hairy Chapter were heavily influenced by the British hard rock and blues rock bands of the time. The band recorded Can't Get Through (LP, 1971) between November 1970 and January 1971 at Dierks Studios in Cologne with producer Dieter Dierks. Dierks introduced strong elements of psychedelic rock to Hairy Chapter's much more straightforward blues rock, creating a record that combined blues rock with strong hints of Krautrock. The album was released on Bacillus Records, a sub-label of the major Bellaphon Records, which was designed to compete with the "real" independent labels. The album and song were conceived in response to “his ongoing victimization by the Jamaican police and as a political piece pushing for the legalization of cannabis, particularly for medical use.” TIL as of 2015, cannabis for medical use is legal in Jamaica, but cannabis for recreational use is illegal (possession of small amounts is a petty offense though). And who would’ve guessed that in 2024, the majority of states in the U.S. have legalized it, either for medical use or recreational use. Still a long way to go to get it legalized around the world, but small steps are being taken. Soon after recording the iconic album "We Are Everything You See" with his band Locomotive, Norman departed the group to found this heavier outfit. Joining the keyboard player were guitarist Neil Clark, bassist Andy Hughes and drummer Jimmy Skidmore. One of the most sought after releases of the Progressive Rock era, "Den Of Iniquity" was the only album recorded by the band and was a dark and heavy affair with superb compositions that included a reworked version of "Mr. Armageddon" (previously recorded by Locomotive), the excellent title track and the epic thirteen minute long `Rabbits'. Issued on EMI's Parlophone imprint in 1971, the album was available for a few short months before being deleted. In reading a npr.org article, I learned that the band arose from Tripping Daisy. That same article also said this about the inception of the band: ”... formed the BAND partly as a reaction to Berggren’s death, in his search for light in the darkness. DeLaughter was also inspired by ‘60s vocal groups like the Fifth Dimension and later by the soaring sound of the Electric Light Orchestra.” In an interview (conducted by Ayesha Rascoe) also for NPR.org, the lead singer says this when asked about the loving nature theme of the album: “Well, I love nature. I actually find a lot of my spiritual alignment in it. You know, I often say this about, you know, the grass that grows in the street where cars are just driving over it daily, but seems like in the middle of this concrete, this blade of grass is growing and flourishing and is alive in the worst circumstances. Or, you know, you’re driving by a park, and there’s a tree that basically absorbed the chain-link fence that it was planted by. And it doesn’t even notice these things. It just continues to live and be vibrant and do what it has to do. I identify with that. Things - the struggles that we go through as human beings - they’re things that you just kind of absorb and keep moving forward and keep growing. He decided to part ways with some records. @kidflash1978 like you his island only will hold a small amount of wax. I was stoked to select this album and a few others to “Keep in da’ family” Angelwitch’s 1980 debut was way ahead of its time. Crispy riffs laced with dark and doomy lyrics made them a bit more dangerous than a lot of the other bands at the time. While the production wasn’t good it kind of added to the overall vibe. Now playing: Haikara – Geafar (1973). The original LP (1972, an ultra-mega rarity) of Haikara's second album Geafar came in a simple jacket with no inserts. Svart Record's version has a gatefold jacket with layout by Harri Hietala, who also laid out the original. The international prestige of Haikara is mostly based on their eponymous debut album (1972), a unique, dark-toned and eclectic progressive rock masterpiece that has been compared to the music of King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator and Tasavallan Presidentti among others. The next album Geafar, released at the end of the following year, may not be as coherent as its predecessor, but it certainly continues the band's classic era and contains some of the finest moments in Finnish prog. Around the time Haikara was released, the vocalist-lyricist Vesa Lehtinen departed to rejoin the reformed Charlies, the other of the vintage rock bands hailing from the Southern Finnish town of Lahti. In a sense this was a blow for Haikara but the band soldiered on. The composer and frontman Vesa Lattunen's somewhat mediocre singing found a much needed counterpart in his sister Auli, whose beautiful voice is present to varying degrees on Geafar. This time Lattunen also wrote the lyrics by himself. Some critics at the time blamed Geafar for being too introverted and uneven. From today's perspective it can be said that the closer one listens to this album, free of prejudices and expectations, the better it sounds in its own right. The morbidly surreal cover art of Geafar, strongly influenced by Salvador Dalí, was again painted by the band's drummer Markus Heikkerö. Released at the height of the prog rock craze in 1972, Haikara's first album was modestly popular in Finland, but the band never made it to the kind of level of popularity that Wigwam and Tasavallan Presidentti did. Haikara's eponymous album, however, is nowadays rightfully considered as one of the most important and artistically successful Finnish prog albums. The Svart edition of Haikara's first album comes in gatefold covers and includes the original lyric sheet plus a reproduction of a rare concert poster from the time. Album layout has been prepared by the record's original photographer and layout artist Harri Hietala, and he's added previously unseen photos from his personal archives. The album has been mastered for vinyl from the original tapes at Orgone Studios.
