British War Medal in Silver, part of a World War 1 trio named M-374111 Pte Antonio Xuereb, Maltese serving in the ASC. In his records it was discovered that by the time he received his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, he had lost his great war trio and applied for a replacement set to add to his LSGC. The British War Medal presented today is the original one from the original lost trio. Replacement medals had the letter R etched on the rim of the medal, and this particular medal does not has this, meaning that this medal forms part of the original set. . . . . . #medals #britishmedals #medalcollection #medal #ww1medals #ww1 #greatwar #worldwar1 #maltalabourcorps #maltese #history #military #militariacollection #militaria #antiques #militarycollectables #collectables #militaryantiques #collections #ww1british #malta #collectors #history #britishempire #rare

Private Thomas Alfred Sewell 12171, 2nd Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment (then 77005, 2nd Garrison Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers). Being sold together were these medals and medallion with 'Ypres 1929 Belgium 1st Prize Cematery [sic] Gardeners Flower Show' written on the box. With the Blitz destroying WWI service records and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission reportedly destroying records in 1970, this has been quite a challenging yet insightful and enjoyable research project. Essentially, I believe that the recipient of the medals is the same person who was the head gardener of Poelcapelle British Cemetery. Although, this site is not the easiest to have an in-depth explanation, I will give it a go with some of the main points, albeit slightly briefer than the booklet I am putting together. The reasons I believe it is the same person, beyond having the same name, are listed in the comments. Thank you for having a read! That being said, if anyone can provide any further links (or anything that proves they aren’t linked!), that would be greatly appreciated. #ww1 #greatwar #worldwar1 #worldwar1history #commonwealthwargraves #commonwealthwargravescommission #royalwestkentregiment #northumberlandfusiliers #northumberland #uk #carlisle #ww1medals #history #gardener #medals #militaria #militariacollector #militariacollection #militarymedals #ypres #poelcapellebritishcemetery #poelcapelle #belgium #warmedal

A nice example of a memorial plaque or also known as a “death penny”/ “dead man’s penny”. These were issued named and often given to the next of KIN of the solider. This particular one is correctly named to John William Jones. Unfortunately it is impossible to pin point the exact identity of this gentlemen as the name and surname are very common. The H in (He) can often be a indicator and clue as the H is narrower in plaques issued to navy personnel and wider to the Army. On the reverse side, the plaque features a stamped (WA) which stand for Woolwich Arsenal (Manufacturers). Although this example cannot be traced directly, it makes a fantastic edition to the collection. #ww1medals #ww1deathpenny #ww1history #ww1memorial

Just listed on my site A Battle of Arras MM Group with citation to S SJT Howard A Corps Signal Coy RE. Staff-Sergeant Howard proceeded with an Officer to Lievin on the night 22nd/23rd April 1917, to superintend the removal of Wireless Station from Battalion to Brigade H.Q. and to install a Power Buzzer. He volunteered for this duty knowing the difficulties to be encountered reaching the Station which was in an especially exposed spot, his efforts to encourage the carrying party during the journey up were noticed by the Officer. The frequent bursts of shell fire obliged them to shelter several times on route. At Lievin, the Officer had to confer with the Battalion, so Staff Sergeant Howard offered to go to the Quarries and commence dismantling the Station, as the enemy fire seemed increasing rather than decreasing in violence. On reaching the Quarries some time afterwards, the Officer found that the work had to be carried on during lulls in the fire, and the Staff Sergeant was encouraging the men by doing a large part of the work himself. On their return to H.Q., both the Officer and Staff-Sergt. Howard had to be attended by the medical Officer, who attributed their sickness to Gas”. #medals #ww1 #gallantry #greatwar #history #ww1medals

A lovely pin (flag) badge made in an effort to raise funds for the Flag Day Charity fund. There were flag-day appeals to support prisoners of war, refugees especially Belgian (which were in high numbers in Edinburgh), the wounded (especially the blinded or 'crippled'), and for organisations such as Red Cross & St John's. This flag, it mentions the men of Redford barracks and an image of the famous Scots Greys who were stationed in Redford at this time. The barracks itself had been built was completed in 1915 and was originally Garrisoned by the Scots Greys. In later years, the Scots Dragoon Gaurds (armoured unit) was also stationed there, along with members of the Lothian and Borders Yeomanry. The barracks are still in use today and is the largest Edinburgh Garrison, which now houses Balaclava Company, 5th battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, 105 Royal Artillery, E squadron of the Scottish and Northern Irish Yeomanry, Intelligent Corps, Bagpipe School and much more. Unfortunately, the barracks are set to close down in 2029 due to continuous ridicules budget cuts of the MOD. However, this may not happen as they were meant to be such down this year. No doubt if it is to shit down, the modern buildings will be demolished with the original barracks buildings being converted to student accommodation, which is becoming the plague for historic buildings in Edinburgh in general. #ww1medals #ww1 #worldwarone #Edinburgh #edinburghhistory #thegreatwar #britisharmy # #ww1british #ww1scottish #CityofEdinburgh #Scotsgreys

Nelson George Thomas Giles was born in 1888 in Wokingham, Berkshire. His parents were marine store dealers, old fashion name for scrap metal dealer. Not the most glamorous or affluent upbringing as his illustrious first name would suggests. But parents always dream of the better things for their off spring. As a case of "my name, my destiny", in 1907, at the age of 19 and a mere 5ft 2" , our Nelson decided to join the Navy. Ironically his first ship was....you guessed it....HMS Nelson... Many more ships followed and then came WW1. Our intrepid Nelson took it all in his stride and he almost made it home. Unfortunately, at the end of 1919, during an operation which can be assumed to be minesweeping, he suffered serious injuries which caused his death in 1920. He was awarded his medals posthumously and, as he died after the war, he wasn't awarded a war grave....He never married or had children, he gave his life to the Navy. He might have not been of noble birth like is name-sake, but he was noble nevertheless. #royalnavy #inthenavy #ww1 #ww1medals #ww1history #lifestory #sacrifice #minesweeper #warhero #socialhistory #heritage

Conditionvery fine Herbert Johnson was born at Salderdon on 18 June 1986, the son of Hannah Johnson of East Wood, Nottinghamshire. A professional soldier prior to the Great War he was posted to the B.E.F. at its outbreak. Entering the war in France on 13 August 1914 it was not long before Johnson and the rest of the army saw action at the Battle of Mons on 23 August. As the British withdrew from Mons a number of fierce rearguard actions saw many prisoners taken. One of these was Johnson who is listed as a prisoner of war the day after the Battle on 24 August. He was not to see freedom again until the end of the war. #militaria #militariaforsale #armysurplus #collecting #militariacollecting #militariatoday #ww1british #ww1britisharmy #ww1militaria #ww1 #ww1medals #ww1forsale #britishmedals #medal #ww1medal

#ww1medals #ww1 #worldwarone #Edinburgh #edinburghhistory #thegreatwar #britisharmy # #ww1british

Old tattered things can sometimes be very poignant. These two stars with faded ribbons are all that remains of tragic private Montgomery, who sustained injuries in France in 1916, only to be sent back to the front and gone missing at Salonika in 1918. Not much for a young life..... #ww1 #hero #britisharmy #ww1history #ww1medals #tragedy #lifestory #younglife #death #war

Mercantile Marine War Medal issued to Angelo Lauron. I acquired this medal locally and did not think much about it at first; I purchased it solely because I did not have an example like it. The surname seemed foreign to me and so did not fit into my collection. Upon further research on the name engraved on the medal I discovered that the recipient is of Maltese nationality. Angelo Lauron was born in Valletta, Malta in 1885, and together with the Mercantile Marine he was also awarded the British War Medal. Lauron emigrated to the United States of America following the end of the war, claiming his medals several years later in April of 1934. . . . #medals #britishmedals #medalcollection #medal #ww1medals #ww1 #greatwar #worldwar1 #maltalabourcorps #maltese #history #military #militariacollection #militaria #antiques #militarycollectables #collectables #militaryantiques #collections #ww1british #malta #collectors #history #britishempire #rare
