There’s a bunch of ways to become more aware of what we put into our body, and why. 📝 Sometimes it can be stressful to think of ALL the habits to change or improve, so it’s smart to take pressure off and start with a simple step. 🥗 A food-log is a great way to simply see what we eat, and get a feel for how our body performs with certain foods after a week or two of food-journaling. 🥙 Awareness is often the only piece needed to make a change that feels easy. Tools like the hunger scale and noticing where our hunger is coming from are great for building awareness. 🌮 Knowing how hungry we are and then eating appropriate amounts can be done simply by using your hands to measure quantities. 🆅🅸🅾🅻🅰 🅲🅾🆁🅳🅾🆅🅰 was the first Native American woman to receive a PhD in philosophy!🙌 Even as she became an expert on traditional Western philosophy, she still kept space in her studies to define a Native American philosophy. Her teaching career took place at several universities ( University of Alaska-Fairbanks, University of New Mexico, Idaho State University, Oregon State University and Colorado State University) and she belonged to numerous professional organizations. One of her well-known books about Native American identity is called, “How It Is: A Native American Creation Story and Who We Are” She encourages us to question any view that claims a singular truth, and did this herself by challenging traditional Native American beliefs with her own unique perspectives and diverse studies. Kongqiu was a Chinese philosopher, politician, and teacher whose message of knowledge, benevolence, loyalty, and virtue were the main guiding philosophy of China for thousands of years.📚 In the West he is known as 🅲🅾🅽🅵🆄🅲🅸🆄🆂, and he was born in 551 B.C.E. in what is now the Shandong province, in eastern China. It’s believed that the aristocratic family which he was born in fell on hard times because as a young man he took low-position jobs. We see how HAPPY people are when they look great- but it’s not as much about the looks as it is about the FEELINGS that come along with being in the gym. 🏋️‍♀️ Hormones get released every time you exercise that boost happiness, and diminish stress. This has a huge impact on overall CONFIDENCE- which changes the way someone interacts with others. 🤼‍♀️ A shy, timid, insecure person might struggle to say what’s on their mind, reach for their goals, or create the life they want for themselves. Everyone’s body is different so these measures vary per individual. -One way to tune into our particular body’s signals, is by asking the question BEFORE we eat, “on a scale of 1-10, how hungry am I?” 𝗔 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 “𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲” 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿. - It’s suggested to eat between 1 and 4, and stop eating at 6. -Another way of self-assessing your hunger is by asking yourself “is my hunger coming frommy stomach, my mouth, or my heart?” “𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫’ 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐚𝐭. Honor and respect your body’s physical need for food by choosing not to skip meals. “𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫” 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠- 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐬. Take time to figure out specifically what you are craving. Is it a particular food? When we’re in a rush, pressed for time, or just have other things on our minds, it can be easy to “just eat to eat”; not taking the time to decide, consciously what we put in our body. Unconscious eating can lead to making food choices out of convenience and not for health. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗯𝘆: 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭… 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨! 📝 This step is only about becoming aware- -not about judgment, or changing behavior– of your current food habits and diet. 🥗 Harvard Healthy agreed that the key to keeping a food log or journal is consistency. So noting the same things for each meal and snack is useful. 𝐀 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 can include the following: ✒️ 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 are you eating?? Write down the specific food and beverage consumed and how it is prepared (baked, broiled, fried, etc.). Include any sauces, condiments, dressings, or toppings. ✒️ 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 are you eating?? List the amount in household measures (cups, teaspoons, tablespoons) or in ounces. If possible, it is best to weigh and measure your food. If you are away from home, do your best to estimate the portion. ✒️ 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 are you eating? Noting the time that you’re eating can be very helpful in identifying potentially problematic times, such as late-night snacking. ✒️ 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 are you eating? Thich shared that the deep desire and intention to become a monk stayed with him all his life- “the beginner's mind” kept him curious and engaged in his practice. When war came to Vietnam, monks and nuns were confronted with the question of whether to adhere to the contemplative life and stay meditating in the monasteries, or to help those around them suffering under the bombings and turmoil of war. Thich Nhat Hanh was one of those who chose to do both. 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐫. 𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞! 🏆 He’s considered the father of “engaged Buddhism,” a movement linking mindfulness practice with social action. As you expand on the thing(s) you are grateful for from that day, more examples of gratitude naturally will come, and the emotions associated with gratitude are re-engaged, and re-experienced. 📊 Statistics indicate that barely 17 percent of older Americans regularly lift weights. 🔬 Scientists at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland did a study with 80 male and female volunteers between 65 and 75 years old. 🤔 Have you ever been confronted by someone, only to be complimented on your effort and great work? Isn’t that a pleasantly surprising thing for someone to do? Often times we forget to pause 😟 and really acknowledge someone. It’s easy to assume that they already know they’re doing a great job. Being able to affirm and aspire others is a leadership quality that greatly motivates and impacts others. And it can be as simple as going to a colleague at work, a person serving you as their customer, or a family member. For example, if someone is self-conscious and worries about weight gain, they may cope by either binge eating or dieting inappropriately. This makes them more self-conscious and worried, which, in turn, can cyclically have a negative effect on their health and worsen the initial stressor. ➕ 𝘼 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙮 is known as “an adaptive behavior” - it’s something that lessens the stressor and supports the individual in a healthy way at the same time. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 to get frustrated when we’re not “there”- when we're not where we expected to be. It’s normal to sometimes compare ourselves to others, and not see how far we’ve actually come. 🙏 Even though these ways of judging ourselves may be normal sometimes, we do better in life when we take the time to first see our progress. See the things that we have done, and that is happening right now, today, and be satisfied with where we are.
