3.1 Recounting Past Experiences (Concerning Others) Yesterday, we discussed the importance of helping your child recount past experiences for themselves. Once they can fluently and successfully recall these experiences about 80% of the time, we can encourage them to recount past experiences for others. This not only enhances their social awareness but also their understanding of their surroundings. Similar to our previous discussion, one way to improve their short-term memory for recounting past experiences is by having them observe activities in the living room (for example, Daddy watching TV on the sofa) and then coming back to report to another adult when asked, "What is Daddy doing?" This can be turned into a fun activity where the child and parent take turns observing activities in different rooms and reporting back. 🌟Pro tip: Using a photo as a prompt can help if they struggle to recall. The function of a behavior can be thought of as the “why” behind a behavior. Knowing the function is the key to reducing challenging behavior, and teaching new skills that serve the same purpose for the learner! There are 4 functions of behavior. A behavior can occur for any single function, or be multi-functional. The 4 functions are: Sensory: The behavior meets a sensory need/ feels good to do. EX: clicking a pen repetitively beacuse you enjoy the sound. Escape: The behavior removes and/or delays something unpleasant. EX: Your child asks for a break from homework and you give them a break. Attention: The behavior results in some sort of attention. EX: Calling a friend on the phone results in conversation with your friend. Tangible: The behavior results in access to items or activities.
