The annual Hot Shops Art Center open house is a wrap, and there are always wonderful highlights from this busy weekend. Among my favorites are the encounters with the Seekers of Mr. Mouse, who lives under the stairs just outside my studio. He is fond of holidays, particularly Christmas. The Seekers of Mr. Mouse reported this weekend that his tree and wreath were up to welcome guests. His bed was made, even if his floors could use a sweeping. It's capture and release season. We're having a bit of a cold snap which always brings the field mice scrambling for warmth—in my cellar! They can squeeze through the tiniest crevices so who knows where they are coming in. I set no-harm traps and release them in a naturalized park with lots of grasses and seeds. BTW, my 22lb. The big old full moon peeks through the scraggly trees this morning, framed by a tangled wreath in the bedroom window overlooking Lake Wanda. There is a mouse in our house. Unfortunately, I am not talking about a cute Christmas book we all need to buy the children in our lives. Nor am I channeling Dr. Seuss with this post. There is an actual mouse somewhere in our house. I guess this is what happens when you buy a home that is over a hundred years old. There are cracks where a mouse (I am hoping it is only one), can get in. And now, in the middle of the Christmas season, Tony and I are trying to figure out which cracks it’s using to find it’s way into our kitchen. It’s one of those annoying, real life things that you don’t want to happen, but they do. Things we don’t want to happen at Christmas. Some years, December rolls around and it feels like nothing goes the way we want. We long to spend time with the people we love, but we are sick. We were looking forward to meeting up with friends for a Christmas party, but a big project came up at work. We had the perfect present idea for our family, but it’s backordered until March. We want to get in the Christmas spirit, but we feel thwarted at every turn. The good news though, is that there are small ways we can make the most of this season, despite its disappointments. Well this morning has been eventful! I was just sitting watching the news with my puppy Charli, when next minute she hears this squeaking noise that sounds just like her toys, jumps up and runs to where my little cat Akari had cornered this mouse in the dining room! I quickly rescued the mouse before any damage could be done, then I put it in a takeaway container and repatriated it down the road, a couple of kilometres away. I arrived home to find yet another mouse in the dining room and once again Akari and Charli both hovering over it. So there’s a second mouse sitting in a takeaway container waiting for me to go down the road a little bit later. Only two days ago my neighbour was telling me there is a mouse problem, I told her that may disappear if my cats hang out in her garden a bit, as both of my neighbours in Mullumbimby praised the efforts of the scent of my cats, in keeping the rats and mice away from their homes for the last 3 1/2 years. This is the first time Akari has ever actually brought us a mouse and she is a super gentle cat, so neither of them appear to be damaged in anyway, but I’m not looking forward to having her bring more now that she has a taste for hunting them. But then again I don’t want to have mice in my house either. I don’t think they would stand a chance between the three animals, so for their own sake I hope they start to pick up the scent and just stay away. Some updates as of late. 💒 🐁 🌿 . I still haven’t been to a wedding! 🙀 . My great uncle opted out of live-streaming his wedding as originally planned - which is cool. I texted with him and talked to him before and after the ceremony, so I felt like I got to be a part of the big day. Married life seems to suit him just fine. 💗 . Weddings make me happy. There’s something so special about two people making a public declaration of their love and intent to stay together in good times and bad that makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Don’t be mistaken though, as much I love love and weddings, I have no intent of ever marrying or leaving my parents. What would they do without me?💗 . In other news, my friend Mallory the Mouse, who I introduced you to a while back, brought her whole family into our garage to hang out. Mallory denied this, but there are multiple undeniable facts at play. . Fact #1: Mom noticed the birdseed bags were suddenly chewed with bird seed strewn about the garage floor. Fact #2: Mom discovered Mallory’s cousin Collin in one of her half-full watering cans. Dad took care of Collin, and Mom and I said a prayer. Fact #3: Dad observed new chew marks in the birdseed bags after he taped the old holes closed and clipped the bag top. And finally Fact #4: Dad placed a humane trap near the bird seed, and he got a chance to meet Mallory’s brother Bobby and sister Sarah. Poor things! Both Bobby and Sarah looked stunned when they were found in the trap. Dad let them each out near the wooded area in our back yard. He said both times, the mice walked out of the humane trap, looked around as if to say, “what in the world just happened?” And then they each skedaddled away. We seem to be mouse free... for now. Mallory is currently staying touch via text and only wants to chat about makeup tutorials - no family talk! 😹 . And in household health news, Mom’s poison ivy is GONE! Thank goodness! 🤢Ewww, y’all! 😳True story. I was trying to sleep and homeboy was not having it. I kept hearing something and thought it was my imagination until I realized it was an adorably creepy little mouse going to town on my last holdout fun size Twix that I had completely forgotten about in my dresser drawer. 💪🏽I made a peppermint spray at 3 am and sprayed it all over the dang place. Between the peppermint & knowing that there was a long-toothed little chocolate fiend in the drawers right beside me I could not fall back asleep. Not sure how something so tiny and “cute” can give me chills and make me shudder, but mission accomplished tiny rodent. 🤢 At some point I fell asleep, but I woke up with full memory of the events of this middle of the night adventure. 🐭I really care about animals and would perhaps even dare say that mice are kind of cute, but not when romping amongst my underthings or really anywhere on the INSIDE of my home. I would like to “deal with them” but not in a mean way, just in a please GTHO of my casa and never return way. 🐍 Do I get a snake? Do I just pick up and move? 😏Help a sister out. Last time we had our pest people come and after 2 trips out, the second technician sealed, no lie, my house with the blood of Jesus against these rodentia devils and we haven’t been bothered ever since. After an absolute mammoth task the past 24hrs. We have had a mouse lurking in our house for the past lets say 5 weeks. The dam thing did not take any baits /traps. So late last night our young ones scream the loudest scream that you bolt down the hallway, my first thoughts a snake 🐍 i absolutely fear these. Nope they had seen the mouse. So we trapped him in one room. Hubby spent over 1 hour trying to catch him. I was blocking the bedroom door off. And taking things from the room as he passed them out. Now miss 9 her room was a nightmare toys and clothes everywhere. After@emptying the room out and listening through the door or things being moved and hearing the words ah i missed it. Finally he was caught. The wee early hours of Sunday morning he was released. This photo was the aftermath clean up. Carpets, walls, toys all cleaned and disinfectant. We were walking the beach perimeter at twilight and this baby mouse came stumbling over the sand up to Beau! So small his eyes weren’t even open. He hung around at length and not knowing how his nest or mama could possibly be close by, we made a rescue attempt. We found quickly through some internet research that the success rate of caring for a baby mouse is low... and why. We did our best to make him a little home and feed him and keep him warm, but he died the next day. He could have already been away from a food source too long, or already sick with something, or maybe ate too much too fast, or the wrong way (it’s common for them to accidentally inhale their food!)😔 But he taught us that the length of time is not as important as the depth of emotion.
