Four years ago today our Broadway Revival of #edwardalbee’s #whosafraidofvirginiawoolf directed by #JoeMantello ceased performances after 9 previews-never to reopen. My small tribute here to that incisive modernist production that I am so grateful to have been a part of-that a few people experienced before it shuttered. It’s one of my favorite sets for a play-a delicate sometimes undetected progression of removal onstage- until the end -exposing the gravity and complexities of a marriage-shown, here in renderings,and model with a couple of onstage rehearsal images and one of my first sketches. I loved working on this show, and the process with these extraordinary artists. I enjoyed the characters and the story flowed nicely. I really liked the chemistry between Starr and Brady and was invested in how their story would turn out. After reading this story, I can definitely see myself reading more of the romances in this series. Designing, Prepping & Creating the Rockettes for Are You There God, it’s Me Margaret! I went to the department stores with face chart in hand and swatched as many reds as I could find for the perfect 1968 red! The winner was Lancome 133 Sunrise Ruby. We spent days on set creating lip and cheek palettes as well as painting and shaping press on nails. I chose a pearl white nail polish and a bright powder pink cheek color, a white eye shadow with a distinct brown contour and large fluffy lashes. The look was complete with a Doe shaped eyeliner using cake or liquid black liner. If you slide to the next photo, you can see the behind-the-scenes before the dancers went on stage. I got to meet the wonderful choreographer Mandy Moore. I loved collaborating with our amazing Director, Costume Designer and Hair HOD. My team of makeup artists absolutely killed it!!! Joan Cusack’s character Cynthia has some of the more dramatic looks! At one point, Melanie sports a hairstyle in homage to her mother Tippi Hedren, star of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Okay, last minute change because…. 🥲 I just happened to saw the Barbie movie, two days ago (yeah I know, I’m late….don’t judge me !!! ), and this particular scene really warmed my little “ blood-pumping “ organ in a way I wouldn’t have imagined. It was by far one of the few touching moments of the movie. Context (some spoilers might be written, so act accordingly knowing this) : Barbie is in the real world and start to realize how her “ perfect Barbieland “ is in fact a pale copy of what joy and life really looks like. A joy she kinda saw for a minute in the real world. And as she look around, sitting on a bench, Barbie gave an intrigued look to the old woman that was relaxing right next to her. A smile started to appear on her face as she told the following sentence : “ You’re so beautiful “ “ I know it “ replied the old woman. We saw then the two people sharing a common laugh as the both were admiring each other. -End of the scene- I think it is such an important scene for us to understand, share and talk about because, most of the time, we tends to forget how beautiful our elders are, on the outside and so on the inside. Full of wisdom, experience, memories…they are the personification of “ I lived, I’m living, I will live “. That’s why in most families, grandparents are the roots and heart of the family. And I think that’s what Barbie saw in the old woman (which is played by Ann Roth btw ✌🏽) Not to mention that Barbie, the personification of modern “ Beauty “ herself, said it, genuinely !!! Btw, Margot Robbie was just perfect for this role ! ✨💯 What a powerful message to cherish. 16 AUGUST I first met Ann Roth, star of BARBIE movie, while I was working on THE MOSQUITO COAST, in which I doubled for Harrison Ford - can you see any difference in the photos, for which Gary Jones designed the costumes and introduced me to the benefits of wearing Hawaiian shirts. I send prayers for all the victims of the horrific tragedy in Maui and also recall my visit there with my parents and three year old son in the spring of 1988. I purchased a few H shirts then including one for my father which I inherited back in 2004. Some of you may recall that this string of posts began during the pandemic in the spring of 2020. I had been sending photos of my garden to cheer up friends confined in apartments when someone asked how many Hawaiian shirts did I have. I had no idea what the number was so everyday I wrote a post with a photo in my garden wearing an H shirt. The answer turned out to be 231. The one I am wearing in the photo is #231, the last H shirt I purchased - shout out to Angie & Stephen @bigfunshirts.
